Classically charming with a modern twist, it sets the scene for a memorable escape in rural Lincolnshire. As soon as you arrive, drop your bags, flick on the kettle and cut yourself a slice of cake from the complimentary hamper left by your host. Take a seat at the bistro set in your quaint country garden and watch the birds and rabbits flit across the lawn. Once you’re rested and recharged, pull on your walking boots and set out for a ramble along bridleways and lesser travelled lanes. Plus, you’re less than a fifteen-minute drive from the market town of Grantham and the historic castle and stately home of Belvoir.  When you get home, the cosy living room with comfy tufted sofas calls for an evening in front of the crackling log fire, sharing a bottle of your favourite drop and playing board games with your loved ones.

A dash of magic has been liberally sprinkled over the traditional interior of this charming cottage and we’re big fans. The living room is cosy as you like, with a squashy pair of teal chesterfield sofas, an open fire and gilt-framed pictures. Upstairs, the bedrooms have a sumptuous boutique feel (we loved the luscious leafy look in one of them) and rural views that invite total relaxation. The unique dining nook is adorned with sheepskins, a chandelier made of antlers and characterful wallpaper depicting country scenes, making it a space fit for a (smallish) party of lords and ladies. The setting is rather lovely too, in a pretty Lincolnshire hamlet, with open countryside all around. Outside there’s a beautiful garden with a pergola and dining areas for those dusky summer evenings. Nearby Harlaxton, a five-minute drive away, is ideal for stocking up on basic supplies, as well as providing a slice of history with Harlaxton Manor. Drive a little further to take a stroll down Grantham Canal for gorgeous waterside views or explore the pale limestone streets of Stamford. Depending on the season, evenings are either about a glass of something cold in the garden, or a warming red in front of the fire – whichever way, it’s a delight.

Secret doors and treasures galore, this Grade II listed home in a quiet part of Long Bennington village is steeped in history and culture. A visual feast – you’ll find carved furniture from Africa, a Rajasthani chest, a coffee table from China, and red and gold chairs from Spain. It’s no wonder your hosts are both artists who love to travel. We could spend hours here just admiring the precious antiques around the home – including an intricately carved screen brought back by explorer Sir Francis Younghusband after he led the British Army into Tibet. More is more here with curiosities in every corner, but there’s plenty of space to relax too. Unwind in the foliage-filled conservatory, lie on the sofa in the living room where a traditional Persian rug pops against a terracotta floor, or take a walk amidst the daffodils in the garden outside. If you can ever peel yourself away from this magical gem, Newark historic market town – known for its indie shops, antiques and old buildings – is only a fifteen-minute drive from your door. One thing’s for sure, this spot will satisfy the soul.

We recommend the seventy-minute cycle to Buxton – a lovely town dating back to the Roman times that's known for its natural thermal springs. Green Fields

This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

Found in the centre of town, a thirteen-minute walk from Lincoln's iconic Cathedral, this large family home has been restored with comfort and style in mind. Especially so, given the size of the two lounges. Add the dining area into the equation, and you can see how there's plenty of room for everyone to carve out their own space. Two pull-out beds and two single sofa beds keep sleeping arrangements flexible, although these are best for children as they're on the smaller side. 

Step out through the bifold doors onto a large patio area with garden furniture for seamless indoor and outdoor dining. Down from the patio is a large grass area and lower patio area with a Hot Tub suitable for 6-7 people. This is the perfect garden for summer socials and BBQs.

This unique home was a bakery in the 1950s but it was converted by the host's parents, who both worked at the Lincoln School of Art. As well as being a day job, they also had a strong interest in artistic endeavours and they filled the interior with hand-crafted ceramics, fabrics and paintings. Today, much of their collection remains and it lends the feel of part-museum, part-period home — especially with the hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace. The large garden is equally special too, with a pond full of frogs and plenty of lawn space on which to lie back with a book borrowed from the packed shelves in the dining room. When you fancy exploring your surroundings, the city of Lincoln is thirteen minutes away in the car, while the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty. Closer to home, there's a pub two minutes' walk around the corner.

This semi-detached cottage is nestled in the beautiful grounds of the Chatsworth Estate. Accessed by a single-track road (not suitable for low cars), you’ll be welcomed by cosy rooms and a wonderful sense of seclusion. There is also a wood-burning stove, a private rear garden and flexible sleeping arrangements – the zip-and-link bed can be arranged as a double or two single beds on request. From the moment you step inside, you'll be wowed by soaring double-height ceilings, vast windows looking out over the gardens, plus a beautiful blue kitchen that will get your culinary juices flowing.

Elsewhere, the ground floor offers a sociable seating area set around a woodburning stove, a separate snug for when you want some time to yourself, plus a bedroom with direct access to the outdoors. Make your way upstairs, and you'll uncover a further two master bedrooms with en-suites and far-reaching vistas over the surrounding landscape.

Step out through the chic Crittal-style doors to discover a beautifully manicured garden with plenty of outdoor seating for dining and relaxing. Make the most of the west-facing garden and jump in the hot tub for a soothing soak as the sun dips below the horizon.

Away from this spectacular home, the charming university city of Cambridge is under an hour's drive away. We'd suggest a self-guided tour of the colleges before heading downriver on a punt. And while you can do this on your own, we've seen too many people fall in, so we'd suggest hiring a pro punter to help you navigate the water. Nearby, Grafham Water offers more opportunities to get out on the water, either at the sailing club or the giant inflatable water park.

A Rose by Any Name

This charming apartment is tucked away in the heart of the Peak District. It’s the perfect base for a couple looking to spend a few romantic days away in the countryside. Beautiful Bakewell is a fourteen-minute drive, and Chatsworth House, with its rich history and stunning gardens, is eighteen minutes away. 

This is a home with comfort at its heart. After days spent touring historic houses and meandering around scenic villages, it’s a delight to return to. You might spend the morning hiking in the countryside surrounding the farm, and then head back here to curl up with a good book. The courtyard garden is a lovely spot for an alfresco lunch, and boasts gorgeous views. 

In the evening, stroll thirteen minutes to the local pub for a pint by the roaring fire. You can dine there or back at the apartment, enjoying the cosy open-plan living and dining space. Later on, sink into the oh-so-comfortable bed – you’re guaranteed a peaceful night’s sleep here. 


Peaky Blinder

After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. If the weather's playing ball, you can even eat outside, which will give you an opportunity to admire the bucolic scenery.

As well as this private patio and barbecue, there's a shared fire pit on the grounds around which to gather once darkness falls. Guests also get access to a shared games room, which has tables for ping-pong and pool, board games and toys, as well as a small shop selling meat from the surrounding farm and locally produced artisanal products.

Sitting deep within the Peak District, you're certainly not short of walking routes in the local area, plus a couple of historic attractions — Magpie Mine is only a ten-minute walk, for instance. And what would a rural getaway be without a charming pub? You'll probably be happy to hear that the closest one is only eight minutes away on foot.

With 5 acres at your disposal, this rustic cottage in the Peak District is the ideal escape for anyone looking to indulge in a slice of rural peace. Not so rural, however, that you can’t easily nip into the Georgian gem that is Ashbourne. Explore the local coffee shops and markets whilst you’re there by strolling the cobbled streets and admiring the architecture. The award-winning Callow Hall is five minutes away, and Thor’s Cave – one of the beautiful hiking trails of the area – can be found at the other end of a twenty-minute drive. 

But we bet we had you at rural peace, didn’t we? You’d be right to embrace it and there’s no better way than soaking up all that quiet from your position on the sunlounger. In the summer months, you can ward off the heat by slipping into the beautifully clear, private pool. Autumn and spring would best be spent strolling the large garden – you might even pack a basket and thermos for an impromptu picnic when you find a spot that you’re particularly drawn to. 

Select one of the books in the library and curl up with it on the leather sofa, only getting up to top off your coffee. Evenings can be spent watching a movie in front of the crackling fire or by playing board games – just as long as you don’t forget the cocoa. If it’s not too nippy out yet, you might also find an alfresco meal at sunset to be one of your favourite moments of the day.

Bentley Brook Cottage

Lying on the banks of the River Wye, surrounded by beautiful valleys and the pretty courtyards of Bakewell, this charming cottage offers spectacular scenery and plenty of creature comforts. A Grade II listed building dating back to the 17th century, this home has been carefully converted whilst retaining some of its original features. Wooden ceiling beams and an open fire housed in stone remind you of times gone by, while the contemporary kitchen and sumptuous seating areas bring a little luxury into the equation. 

Step outside and you'll find a gorgeous garden, complete with a patio and dining table. This is the perfect spot to spend a morning drinking coffee and planning the day ahead. When it comes to exploring, you won't be short of things to see and do here. Bakewell is widely considered a gem of the Peak District, thanks to its Anglo-Saxon roots and plethora of award-winning restaurants and pubs. Home to the iconic Bakewell pudding, it's safe to say that foodies will be in their element here. You've also got the Derbyshire countryside on your doorstep, meaning you can enjoy the fresh air and fine walks with the dog every day. For more adventurous hikes, the snow-capped mountains of the Peak District are a short drive away. 

Whether you spend your days shopping, hiking or sampling the local cuisine, you'll always have a cosy home to come back to. Throw some logs on the fire and open a bottle of wine, then settle in with a movie, or have a go at cooking your own Bakewell pudding in the kitchen to enjoy with some hot custard.

A quirky period property full of character, this three-storey townhouse is located in a prime position for discovering the best of the city of Warwick. Perched on a narrow street, this spot is tranquil considering its convenient location, just a five-minute walk away from the town centre. 

Lively prints, bold colours and chic designs adorn the home with vibrancy, while modern home comforts ensure a luxurious stay that will have you feeling at home from the moment you arrive. We particularly love the open plan kitchen and dining area, which doubles as a study or home office – as this space invites in a free flow of natural daylight from the secluded patio at the back of the home. 

Enjoy a late afternoon tipple at the alfresco dining area following a fun-filled day out discovering the local area. With Warwick castle only a five-minute stroll away and Priory Park as well as an array of shops, eateries, and pubs to explore – all within super close walking distance, there'll be little need to hop in the car at all when staying in Warwick.

This stylish 2-bedroom apartment is the perfect place to stay for your next trip to Bakewell. Located in the heart of the town, you'll be close to all the action, but still have your own private space to relax in. The apartment features a mix of antique and contemporary decor, creating a unique and cozy atmosphere. The spacious living room is the perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring, and the fully-equipped kitchen is ideal for whipping up a home-cooked meal. Both bedrooms offer a peaceful night's sleep, and the secure free parking is a rare bonus.

Bakewell Bliss

It was game, set and match when we saw this elegant 16th Century grange situated on a quiet lane in the heart of Shakespeare country. Play a spot of tennis on the private courts surrounded by beautiful countryside, have a wander around the formal gardens or picnic on the sweeping lawns. Later, read a book in the hanging tree pod or spot the wildlife around the natural swimming lake. There are lovely sunny patios for alfresco dining, too.

If you want a quiet spot, read the newspapers in the garden room with its botanical print wallpaper, purple sofas and chaise longue. South and west-facing windows create a bright and cheerful space. One of our favourite rooms has to be the orangery with its four sets of double doors, glass lantern roof, swan neck chandelier and long refectory style table primed for convivial, lazy brunches.

There's so much house here – we haven't even mentioned the elegant bedrooms – there are canopied beds, four posters, antiques and designer wallpaper aplenty.

This home is surrounded by some wonderful walks. Ancient Hay Wood is under 7 miles away or culture lovers can head to Stratford-upon-Avon for a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Food lovers, on the other hand, are catered for in Henley-on-Arden, where there are some charming restaurants to discover. Or just relax in the local pub –  there are two friendly ones within a thirty-minute stroll.
