This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

Nestled along the River Nene, this Grade II listed building offers a tranquil escape in the heart of Oxfordshire. Right on the river bank, this traditional mill house dates all the way back to the 18th century, boasting plenty of English charm thanks to large bay windows and green gardens. 

Speaking of the garden, this is a lovely spot to enjoy your morning coffee and watch the swans glide along the water. Once you're feeling refreshed and ready to explore, head into the local village to admire the thatched-roof cottages and quaint churches, or take the dog for a walk through the rich woodland of Bernwood Forest. Of course, no trip to Oxfordshire would be complete without a trip to the prestigious Oxford Univeristy – the Botanic Garden in particular makes for a relaxing afternoon. 

However you choose to pass the time, you'll always have a cosy home to come back to. Summer evenings were made for barbecues on the patio, followed by a glass of wine around the fire pit. Nearby, Grafham Water offers more opportunities to get out on the water, either at the sailing club or the giant inflatable water park.

This is a stunning barn conversion, located on the edge of a 70-acre wood on an estate just a few miles from the Rutland border. It's the perfect combination of tasteful style and accessibility for wheelchair users. This spacious five-bedroom home has been architecturally designed to blend in with its beautiful surroundings, offering guests a unique experience. The impressive open-plan living space with kitchen, dining and sitting room is the focal point of the house, complete with bi-folding doors that open up to allow the living area to seamlessly extend to the terrace which looks directly onto the surrounding ancient woodland. There is plenty of space to spread out including an arts and crafts room/playroom, perfect for all ages to paint, draw, play games and explore their creativity or retreat to the comfortable quiet room to escape to for some tranquil time. Outside, guests can enjoy alfresco dining surrounded by local wildlife on the large terrace or make use of the tennis court on the estate. Within walking distance are the pretty villages of Harringworth and Bulwick; and for a variety of restaurants, cafes and independent shops, charming market towns are all within a 20-minute drive.

The fact that you’re looking directly onto a meadow filled with sheep might tip you off that this home used to be a barn, but that’s about the only hint you’ll get. Through renovating this space, it’s become more of a modern cabin that just so happens to be in close proximity to livestock. The home is an alluring blend of rustic elements like the wood-burning stove and wooden beams, and modern fixtures like the sleek kitchen. Even though inside is where you’d want to be when there’s a bite in the air – how else would you warm yourself if not curled up with a good book next to the fire? – you’ll be hoping for agreeable weather so you can spend all your time outside. Not only is there a hot tub with your name on it, but dining, drinking, and snacking should be done alfresco whenever possible, in our opinion. For a compromise, you can always open the bi-fold doors whilst building puzzles at the bench-style dining table inside. 

If you’re around on Fridays, travel to the neighbouring town of Uppingham in time for their weekly market, and whilst you’re there you can also visit the art galleries and antique shops before grabbing a bite to eat. There are a number of more historical buildings that have been given a second life as wedding venues and are well worth a drive-by – Rockingham Castle and Castle View Farm & Stables are both five minutes away. Even better would be to hire, or bring your own, bicycles so you’re able to view these alongside other landmarks when making use of the many cycling routes around the area.

For everything from bird watching to trips to a quintessentially British pub, this beautiful barn conversion celebrates the English countryside. Tucked away on the prestigious Nevill Holt Estate in rolling Leicestershire, you're only a ten-minute drive from the imposing Rockingham Castle and Gardens, with Nevill Holt Opera House even closer. At Eyebrook Reservoir, only a stone's throw from your door, you can even settle in for a day of trout fishing. Peaceful but still well-connected and with plenty of farmhouse charm and comfort, this barn – with a fire pit and a picnic table overlooking swaths of green – does pretty well for itself. The private courtyard is the perfect spot to savour a cup of tea or a cocktail in the sun. In the evenings, light the barbecue and enjoy an alfresco meal, gathering around the fire pit for toasted marshmallows when the air turns chilly.

Secret doors and treasures galore, this Grade II listed home in a quiet part of Long Bennington village is steeped in history and culture. A visual feast – you’ll find carved furniture from Africa, a Rajasthani chest, a coffee table from China, and red and gold chairs from Spain. We could spend hours here just admiring the precious antiques around the home – including an intricately carved screen brought back by explorer Sir Francis Younghusband after he led the British Army into Tibet.
