We'd call it a love nest for two, but it's just too big for that. Crash out in the snuggly living room, with rattan accents and statement lighting, bringing a dash of modernity. Rustle up a meal in the made-for-action gallery kitchen. Then settle down for a tête-à-tête and evening meal in the separate dining room, with french doors leading out onto that terrace. 
When legs are weary after days exploring the Yorkshire Dales, sink into the enormous freestanding bath, and upstairs, a luxurious bedroom awaits to bank a peaceful night's sleep.

Sitting just on the cusp of the North Yorks National Park in the charming town of Pickering, this home has all the ingredients for a refreshing country getaway. 

In the living room, you'll find comfy furnishings arranged around a log burning stove, as well as some lovably quirky touches, like the wooden stag head mounted on the wall and the repurposed chest used as a table. Upstairs, the comfy bedrooms are matched by an equally pretty bathroom, complete with a contemporary freestanding bathtub ideal for lazy Sunday morning soaks.

Outside, there's a small courtyard, as well as designated bike storage with wall-mounted racks. Thankfully, you're not exactly short of places to pedal to either — Scarborough can be reached in just over an hour and a half's cycling. Closer to home, Pickering Castle is five minutes' walk away and a station for the restored heritage railway line that travels sixteen miles through North Yorkshire is even nearer.

Packed with antiques collected over the years and grand yet striking rooms, this home in Hemsley is a real find. A red-brick facade and topiaried hedges set the tone as you arrive, and inside you’ll find a collection of hand-carved bureaus and cast iron bathtubs. The living room is a vision of deep red with swathes of velvet curtains and an original fireplace keeping things warm in winter. A smaller, cosy family snug is set around a wood-burning stove so the group can easily spread out. In contrast to the rest of the house, the dine-in kitchen is decidedly modern with concrete-grey walls, plush leather dining chairs and a wall of glass looking out over the garden. Though the blue AGA is a nod to farmhouse tradition. If the weather is fine, dinner can be served outside on the patio at the long dining table. An old cherry tree provides patio shade on sunny days and if you visit in Spring, you might catch the blossom falling like snow. If you don’t fancy cooking in the kitchen or firing up the barbecue, there’s a handful of cosy country pubs in Hemsley town, a two-minute walk away.

This pretty retreat is in the historic market town of Helmsley, sits on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. The 110 mile-long Cleveland Way National Trail begins in Helmsley and takes you through the heather-clad hills of the Moors to the cliffs and coast of Filey Brigg – a nine-day trek in total, but you can stop your car at any point along its length. Making this cosy cottage the perfect base for a walking or cycling holiday. Warm interiors offer a serene space to relax after a hike on the Moors and an inviting space for socialising over a board game by the woodstove. Set in one of the most beautiful parts of Yorkshire, this formerly derelict barn was chanced across by its owners in 2015, and lovingly converted into the stunning home it is today. The vibe is English country, with real moments of grandeur. With antlers on the walls, fine china ornaments, touches of tartan, and a solid teak dining table that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, it’s the kind of place you can imagine a hunting party coming back to after a day out on the moors. The grand feel continues in the bedrooms, each of which is as luxurious as the last but has its own unique design. We can see ourselves spending windswept days walking the hills of God’s Own Country before returning to pre-dinner drinks by the fire in the snug (the original stone floor is particularly gorgeous). Once the kids are set up with a movie in the second living room, a candlelit meal around the dining table beckons, followed by a session in the wood-fired hot tub.
