After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. Walking into this beautiful cottage, you’d probably not be able to tell that it is over three-hundred-years old, or that it has a fair amount of experience as a coaching inn. Save for the exposed beams, brickwork, and basic structure, this home’s undergone a complete makeover that’s turned it into a very hospitable, little home. We, of course, love historic touches and found that the ones present here add a bucketload of charm to this home, and the choice of furnishings only further serves to make this space comfortable and inviting. Sink into the plush velvet sofa – by the way, we think the blue around the house brings a brilliant luxe contrast to the space – with the fire crackling at your feet as you catch up on your reading. 

Reading that can also be done outside when the weather is just right. Head out with a cup of coffee and embrace the peace and quiet, enjoying the view of the cathedral when you’ve put your book down for a quick break. 

Back inside, the kitchen – which features a beautiful aga cooker – connects to a dining room by the way of a conservatory, which makes even cooking a social affair as some guests can get breakfast ready whilst others bask in the light streaming in from up above. 

As if this home could get much better, it’s also very close to the famous Peak District National Park and a day out there, admiring the lakes and moors as you hike the round hills, is an absolute must. When you return too tired to cook, head to the local pub or chip shop for a quintessentially British end to your day.

A cosy getaway for two, this charming cottage is packed with character and has idyllic views of the Peak District to match. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking – imagine lush green fields, grazing cattle and tree-dotted hills, all spread out before you – and the best place to admire the rolling countryside is the garden. Make yourself comfortable on the squishy sofa following a long day wandering the Peaks and snuggle up for a movie night – you can sign in to your Netflix, Prime and Disney+ accounts, so there are plenty of films to choose from. When you grow peckish, the kitchen is well-stocked and well-suited to rustling up delicious meals, but if you don't fancy cooking, Foolow's village pub is only a twelve-minute stroll away and serves excellent food and refreshing local ales.

And speaking of exploring, there's a network of public footpaths on your doorstep – simply lace up your walking shoes, head out the front door and the Peak District is yours to ramble and roam. Also close by is Bakewell, home to an array of shops, restaurants and a weekly Monday market – it’s just fifteen minutes by car.

We recommend watching at least one sunrise from the garden chair as you nurse your first coffee of the day.

Walk the grounds – you might even run into resident black lab, Digby, along the way – and have an impromptu kickabout with a football. Set the timer on your phone's camera and pose for a group photo with nothing but green expanse as a background.

The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. Situated within a Peak District estate, this 16th-century hunting tower was built for Bess of Hardwick, the ancestress of the Duke of Devonshire. This four-storey tower isn’t suitable for young children or guests with limited mobility – you’ll need to ascend the steep and winding staircase to reach all areas of this abode. Expect traditional features, with an AGA for cooking family favourites after a day exploring Chatsworth House. You’ll find a health club on the estate too, so speak to your host to arrange a spa session. After a few tennis games on the communal courts, unwind with a glass of red in the cosy sitting room. For local hikes, Curbar Edge and Froggatt Edge are a​​ fifteen-minute drive away.  

To the Tower

Lovingly renovated and carefully restored, Clare and Paul have turned this barn into a contemporary but warm home. Expect bold florals in the main bedroom, inviting sink-in sofas in the living space and a fully-equipped kitchenette for cooked breakfasts on slow-start mornings.

One side of the barn overlooks rolling hills and patchwork fields, so you can watch the sheep grazing while you relax with a mug of tea on the royal blue loveseat. Then there’s the outside space, which boasts a hot tub for soothing tired muscles after long hikes through the Peaks and a seating area for cream tea in the sunshine.

If country walks are on the agenda, there are a number of public footpaths by your front door and the serene Combs Reservoir is a mere seven-minute walk away. If you’re keen to explore a little further afield, the charming spa town of Buxton is reached in fifteen minutes by car. And when the day draws to a close, sip a gin and tonic in a nearby pub before heading back to your pad to watch a purple dusk fall over the countryside.

Walk around your home to discover the secret walking trails through the woods and ask your host to show you the megalithic Rocking Stone nearby. Visit Robin Hood’s Stride (eleven minutes by car or an hour’s walk), take a dip in the swimming hole at Youlgreave (an eight-minute drive) and spend an afternoon at stately Chatsworth House, fifteen minutes away by car.
