Set on the banks of the River Isle, this mill in deepest Somerset was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Close to a thousand years later, part of it still stands and is ideal for holidaymakers looking for a unique rural escape. The internal shell of the building has been kept much the same as it would have looked in the fifteenth century and you certainly get a sense of that with the wooden staircases, exposed stonework and a preserved waterwheel in the attic bedroom. Thankfully, plenty of modern amenities have been added, including a log-burning fire, a country kitchen and a vintage roll-top bathtub that's a relative whippersnapper in comparison to the house itself. In the surrounding grounds, guests can wander about the working farm to meet the animals that also call it home, followed by kayaking and swimming in the river or a bike ride along the adjoining National Cycle Route 33. This being Somerset, there's plenty of countryside walks nearby, as well as cider mills for when you've worked up a thirst.

An old hearth, flagstone floors and cast-iron roll-top baths; this is the farmhouse idyll in the heart of Somerset. The honey-brown stone farmhouse and cottage is surrounded by a sprawling woodland estate on all sides, and is two miles from Ilminster where you’ll find plenty of cosy pubs, restaurants, shops and cafés. There’s a restaurant on the estate itself if you don’t feel like getting in the car. Though the farmhouse kitchen is a delight to cook in and there’s a long dining table to serve the whole group. Or, opt for a barbecue outside in the summer months and keep an eye on the kids running free on the lawn and ducking between trees. At the end of the day, it’s a choice between cuddling up by the wood-burner in the snug lounge or heading out to the wood-fired hot tub for an evening under the stars. There are plenty of books and board games to keep the group happy too. If you’re lucky enough to bag the master bedroom there’s a claw-footed tub and your own wood-burner waiting for you at bedtime.

Located in the tiny hamlet of Atherstone, this Grade II listed farmhouse stands out with its thatched roof, beautiful stonework, and trailing foliage on its exterior walls. Although ancient, it has been beautifully and elegantly refurbished in a relaxed, country style – and what could be more welcoming than a wood-burning stove? The large fireplace, exposed masonry, flagstone floors, and timber beams are some of our favourite features, but your host goes the extra mile to make it even more special. With fluffy bathrobes and a seriously high thread count on the bedding, you can’t help but notice luxury all around. You can even have a private chef come over and cook your dinner. If you don’t fancy a Sunday roast, light up the barbecue in the lush back garden on a sunny day. The quiet country lanes lead two miles to the nearby town of Ilminster where you can stock up on fresh, local produce and immerse yourself in rural culture. And as part of rural culture, you’ll have to take a trip to the pub to sample some fine English ales.

Covered in vibrant green ivy, this quaint cottage in Somerset benefits from the expansive grounds it shares with a breathtaking manor house. Wander out for a walk around the pond and past the horses until you find the perfect spot for a rest. Bask in the tranquillity as you get your nose in a Jane Austen novel and pour yourself tea from a thermos. The cottage itself also overlooks the Victorian stable yard, which adds even more grandeur to the view, so don’t be too surprised if you find yourself daydreaming. 

When you’re not out exploring hiking up the Tor at Glastonbury, or driving out towards Devon or Cornwall, you can stay in, curling up on the sofa with a freshly-brewed coffee after polishing off a hearty breakfast at the little dining counter right by the window. With the warmth of the exposed beams and cosy furnishings, this space is perfectly set up for lounging around, but if the weather permits, we recommend a picnic on the grass right outside. 

Break out the board games after supper, or watch a family movie together. Or, on warmer evenings, you can simply stay outside, drinking in the peaceful surroundings, and great company, under the stars.


The Stablemaster's Cottage

Set on a quiet country lane, this 17th century, Grade II-listed farmhouse makes a wonderful holiday retreat in the heart of rural Somerset. Traditional features of the home have been partnered with luxurious interior furnishings, that maintain a high quality and provide excellent comfort for a snug stay in the countryside. We particularly love the stained glass window in the living room which serves as the gateway from the rustic lounge area, out to the stunning garden at the back. Original stone floorings, low ceilings and exposed wooden beams add oodles of character and personality to the home, while the wood-fired hot tub and living room stove bring the family together and provide a warming atmosphere. The house is surrounded by farmland but the nearby town provides local produce and delicious meals out. The landscape is sublime for country walks and adventures out to discover the local historical sights. If cycling is your thing, there's no better way to explore the myriad of local country lanes and villages than by bicycle. Stop off at Dennis China Works (a fifteen-minute ride away) for a pit stop in the tea rooms or why not visit one of the local cider producers' orchards and presses to see how it's made? Perry’s Cider in Dowlish Wake, for example, is only fifteen minutes away by bicycle or a six-minute drive away in the car.

The kitchen is a vision of modernity with its big breakfast island to accommodate the bustle of family mealtimes and dining takes place in the conservatory area overlooking the sprawling grounds. Stepping outside you’ll find a sweeping, manicured lawn and wooden climbing frame for the kids to run free, and patio dining for the whole group courtesy of a charcoal barbecue should the weather allow. Our favourite part? The wood-fired hot tub hidden between the trees and looking out over the fields and woodland.

This rural spot is a great choice for larger groups looking for a cosy bolthole – return from a day spent strolling through the myriad of local country lanes and footpaths, and be welcomed in by the crackling inglenook fireplace and cosy living room. There are all sorts of thoughtful touches that your hosts have added, including a welcome hamper with some essentials, cakes, and local produce. So settle in for the night, whether you're sipping alfresco wine on the patio in the warmer months or knocking up a hearty meal in the country-house styled kitchen-come-dining room. Although, with a few great pubs within walking distance, we reckon you'll be eating out most nights. Come morning, active types or those simply feeling adventurous can take a thirty-minute drive to the sublime Jurassic Coast for a memorable day trip. Elsewhere, Barrington House – a National Trust house with gardens open to the public – is a twenty-minute drive from home, and well worth a visit, even if just for the charming tea room. When – weary from walking and full of scones – you do eventually return home, toast up those frozen toes by the wood-burning stove or get into the steamy hot tub for a stargazing session. There are four bedrooms – each with its own en-suite – so everyone has a private and comfortable space to retire to. There’s also the owner's large country garden to enjoy – the pond area is perfect for picnics. Inside, there’s plenty of charm with the wooden beams and a super comfy bed. Location-wise, there’s lots to see and do nearby. Ilminster is just a short walk away and offers a variety of shops, pubs, and cafes, while the stunning Jurassic coast and the Quantock Hills are within easy reach.

There's also a private patio where you can enjoy a tipple or two in the evening sun.

We love this fairytale Grade II-listed pink cottage, draped in wisteria and capped by thatch – it doesn't get more idyllic than this. Enjoy the complimentary bread, biscuits, cake, and lovely local produce and have an afternoon tea on your arrival. The cottage benefits from having an open-plan kitchen-diner that's ideal for aspiring Robuchons to entertain their loved ones with lavish meals. The cosy living room with a wood-burning stove is perfect for part of the group to retire to after dinner, while the other half can head outside for a stargazing session from the hot tub. The delightful garden makes a great setting for a picnic on warmer days (catering is available) or just walk to the pub (thirty minutes) for a hearty Sunday roast. Of course, there are some wonderful walks and cycle rides to discover right from your doorstep and bikes can be rented and delivered to the cottage in advance. For a range of boutiques, restaurants and cafes –  head to Ilminster, a three-minute drive or explore Dillington Park, a seven-minute walk away. The crenulated, columned Victorian face of this home is a far cry from a typical, rustic farmhouse. The interior is manor home in miniature with chesterfields around an original fireplace in the main living room, long darkwood dining tables by the bay window, and chandeliers lighting huge bedrooms. Each room retains an element of Victoriana. Attached to the farmhouse, the old cider shed is the kind of country-rustic you’d expect  – flagstone floors in the kitchen, timber beams exposed in eaves bedrooms and a wood-burning in the master suite. The real highlight is the wood-fired hot tub outside beneath the pergola. It looks out over the beautifully manicured gardens, bursting with lavender and colourful hydrangea. If you’re not dining in the grand room inside, head out to the Italian-style loggia where dining is set for the whole group beneath a wooden roof. You’re in the middle of the West Country’s farmland here, with walking trails on your doorstep. But the charming market town of Bridgewater is just a fifteen-minute drive away.

Renovated to the highest standards by the current owners, this gorgeous former rectory is the perfect place for a large family retreat. Dating back to the seventeenth century, the home is built from local honey-coloured stone and faces south across the Somerset countryside. Seven acres of grounds are dotted with chestnut trees and rolling lawns, while there’s also a children’s play area, a heated swimming pool and a croquet lawn, so there's no risk of running out of things to do. During the summer, the terraces are particularly inviting, while the clear skies provide fantastic stargazing opportunities come nighttime. Meanwhile, in winter, the thought of a brisk walk followed by lunch at the local pub is hard to resist — heading straight north from the property will get you to the pretty brooks that run off the River Cary, while the nearby villages of Corton Denham and Babcary are both home to excellent watering holes. The idyllic market town of Castle Cary is a ten-minute drive away, and just beyond that lies Bruton, which has been quietly remaking itself as a haven for artists, foodies and creatives. Located between the two towns, The Newt in Somerset is an extensive country estate, complete with fascinating cider-making and gardening exhibits, a Roman villa museum and plenty of parkland to explore.

Within the sprawling grounds of this Georgian manor home, the only neighbours you’re likely to come across are a couple of llamas, ponies and a waddle of ducks. Classic walled gardens, orchards, vast lawns and pastures make up the ten acres of grounds. Exploring, you’ll find a private swimming pool surrounded by rattan furniture for a drink or two and an outdoor bar and cooking area with a wood-fired pizza oven. There’s also a barn that can be dappled with fairy lights for a special celebration and a former coach house that’s been turned into a dedicated cinema and games room. 

Accommodation is spread across the main house, which dates back to the 18th century, and a separate cottage with its own farmhouse-style kitchen and cosy living room. In the main house, the ground floor is everything you expect from an updated Georgian manor – a library-like sitting room, a grand lounge with gilded mirrors and chandeliers, oil paintings adorning the hallway walls, and a big, bright dining and sitting room looking out over the gardens. The kitchen is a vision of farmhouse charm, with a purring Aga at its centre. 

But, we have to say, the real surprise is the subterranean ‘club’ area. Descend the stairs to find a private, fully-stocked bar and VIP-style velvet booths. It’s the perfect place to host a special event without disturbing the neighbours (or lack thereof).

If you’re looking for a group retreat that combines luxury accommodation with a mystical quality then, abracadabra! This is the one. Influenced by its proximity to Glastonbury (five minutes from the town centre), with its witchcraft myths and Arthurian legends, this home's defining characteristic is quirk, from the architectural details that resemble enchanted oak trees to the dedicated midnight badger-watching spot in the garden. However, while most esoteric accommodation tends to the tumbledown end of the rustic spectrum, this unusual abode is practically palatial. It’s part of a larger estate – which includes an animal rescue sanctuary – but it has its own driveway so it feels completely private. The house is hidden in 20 acres of private grounds in Lottisham, a rural hamlet in pretty Somerset. You’ll be able to explore the surrounding countryside on foot using the many lanes and footpaths – is there anything better than a crisp country stroll with friends, followed by an afternoon in front of a roaring fire? It takes eighteen minutes to drive to Glastonbury, where you can walk up to the Tor to take in the view, and shop in the quirky boutiques for crystals and tarot decks. Winter evenings are all about getting around that Fritz Hansen dining room table with original Eames chairs for slap-up dinners and catch-ups. And you can always keep the night flowing with a game of table tennis in the games room, squirreled away in the ancient stone garage. Across five acres of gardens and woodland, you’ll find vast lawns, furnished patios, an old tennis court and riverside walks with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. It’s palatial inside with four reception rooms – grand wood-panelled lounges, lavish sitting rooms and a dedicated office for those working remotely. The kitchen is fit for banquet-sized meals, and there’s room for 16 in the formal dining room. Bedrooms feel fit for nobility with sleigh beds and four-posters, but quite a few guests will be sharing in threes and fours at full capacity.

Perched on the seafront in Lyme Regis, this second-floor apartment offers postcard-worthy panoramas that won't disappoint. Sit back, relax, and watch the tide roll in from the leather armchairs – thanks to the large windows, the scenery is always front and centre. Even better is the small balcony, the perfect spot for a glass of wine as the sun goes down. The apartment is a great size for two, though a third guest could be accommodated on a sofa bed with prior notice. And the location? You can't beat it. A steep passageway leads directly to the beach, putting the saltwater and single shore right on your doorstep.

Always fantasized about being Lord or Lady of the Manor? Well, now you can be, sort of. This historic stable building (dating back to 1900) is part of a family estate located in the Dorset village of Hinton St Mary. Along with the estate’s gatehouse (also available on Plum Guide), it's been recently refurbished and is accessible to outsiders for the first time. We loved the balance between period features and brand new additions, like the shiny bathroom and kitchen gadgets. Everything is finished in the best possible taste, with some lovely personal touches. The owners clearly want their new guests to feel at home, as they’re happy to accommodate needs, whims and fancies, from arranging a paid-for chef or babysitter, to offering a choice of seasonal duvets, luggage storage, locally sourced ingredients in the welcome pack and everything you’d need to bring your baby (high chair, cot, dinnerware, pram, potty, etc). The home’s location is another definite selling point. At the end of a small village lane, near a cricket green and traditional pub, it’s picturesque and quaint. The nearest town is Sturminster Newton where there are plenty of shops and cafes, a great deli and butchers. This home makes a great base to explore the famous Dorset coast and countryside or simply settle back and relax by the wood-burning stove and imagine your servants are just out of sight.

Even before you enter, it’s clear that there’s something special about Faerie World. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.
