There’s no better way to embrace the ethereal Somerset countryside around Glastonbury than staying in a converted church. In the evening, the stained-glass windows of this gothic church still glow against the landscape, as a roaring wood-burning stove warms up the open living space inside. 30-foot, knaved ceilings inside let the chatter of good times rise to the Gods and there’s a banquet-sized dining table for the whole group on the mezzanine level. This beautiful home, designed by an architect in the 60s, has views, location and mid century charm on its side, and it’s just waiting to welcome you on your next getaway. Only minutes away from Glastonbury high street, spend the morning exploring the quaint shops, sitting down for a coffee at one of the local cafes, and discovering crystals, Norse-inspired curios, and more. Of course, exploring the Tor is a must and although seeing St Michael’s Tower is a unique experience at any time of day, we especially recommend climbing the hill before dusk to watch the sun rise over the valley below. 

Back home, you’ll forget how close you are to town once you’ve settled into the seclusion on offer. Most likely due to the cocoon of natural vegetation and lush garden, but this home really does feel like your own little paradise, and nothing will highlight quite how idyllic it is like the sunken cedarwood hot tub after sun down. Stargaze in between bouts of laughter as you trade stories about the day’s adventures and simply enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful space.

Tucked away amid seemingly endless open countryside in Somerset, this home is a little bit special. It’s part of a larger estate – which includes an animal rescue sanctuary – but it has its own driveway so it feels completely private. It’s been transformed into a guesthouse from the ancient outbuildings, and the result is a dreamy bohemian space. 

The house is hidden in 20 acres of private grounds in Lottisham, a rural hamlet in pretty Somerset. You’ll be able to explore the surrounding countryside on foot using the many lanes and footpaths – is there anything better than a crisp country stroll with friends, followed by an afternoon in front of a roaring fire? You’ve also got all of Somerset’s delights to discover by car. It takes eighteen minutes to drive to Glastonbury, where you can walk up to the Tor to take in the view, and shop in the quirky boutiques for crystals and tarot decks. Castle Cary and its charming cafes are sixteen minutes away, and it takes nineteen minutes to reach beautiful Bruton. 

That said you might find that you don’t want to leave the grounds at all. The house is elegant yet warm, full of rustic charm and modern luxuries – everything you need for a relaxing stay is to hand here. You’ll spend your time cooking delicious meals in the stunning kitchen, or playing games in one of the sitting rooms. The outside space is just as lovely, with a huge terrace and a barbecue that makes alfresco feasts in the summer an absolute dream. Just a twenty-minute drive from the town of Glastonbury, this wooden lodge is so much more than a base from which you can explore the fields. It's a tiny spa resort that could convince you to spend more time relaxing at home than you planned. Kick off your hiking boots and head to your private, wrap-around terrace. With a feeling of seclusion and views over the hills, you might forget you're conveniently close to the shops and restaurants of the town.

Steering clear of the traditional style of lodge homes, this place is chic and glamorous, with contemporary timber cladding, a glossy black kitchen and comfy, modern furnishings. We love the L-shaped deck, where you'll find your private hot tub and a secret covered area which comes into its at night – just wait until you switch on the starlight roof. But there's even more to love indoors, with a cosy log burner for winter stays and a fabulous bathroom with a big, freestanding bath and a walk-in rainfall shower. Perfect for couples, this place is great if you're a fan of country walks and moonlit dips (and who isn't?).

Its wooden exterior blends in nicely with the woodlands and trails nearby, but there are a few features which are somewhat out of the ordinary for a rural escape. First off, the hot tub. Sitting atop your vast decking, alongside a barbecue, outdoor lounge, and shady alfresco dining table, this is the perfect place to de-stress in nature. After this jaw-dropping welcome to the home, swap the tub bubbles for a glass of champagne and take a look around the home. Understated yet stylish, we love the greys, greens, and blues in this sophisticated, natural colour palette. Thanks to huge, panoramic windows in the lounge, you can admire daily sunrises and sunsets from the comfort of the sofa if the weather doesn't hold up.

That said, we think you might be spending a lot of time at home. This wooden lodge might look understated, but the interiors are superbly stylish, modern, and playful. The golden patchwork sofa feels warm and homely, in perfect contrast to the sleek, grey kitchen. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the home with light, bringing the outside in – and thanks to certain luxury features, your host has made the 'great outdoors' into the 'fabulous outdoors'. Take in the fresh, country air on the sun loungers on the wrap-around decking. Or maybe you'd rather spend an evening under the star-studded sky in your private hot tub. Pop a bottle of English fizz in the wine cooler and relax under the sheltered, starlight roof – you've earned it.

This wood-clad cabin sits at the bottom of the Mendip Hills, surrounded by the beautiful Somerset countryside. Spot wildlife in the Rodney Stoke Nature Reserve, a twenty-minute walk away, or dander into the village of Draycott in ten minutes. And it’s forty minutes on foot along the walking trails into Cheddar town, where you can stock up on the region’s famous protected cheese. Perhaps a grilled cheese toastie on the wood-fired brick barbecue is on the cards when you get back. There’s plenty of room to dine and lounge outside on the wrap-around terrace. Or, fire up the hot tub for a post-hike soak and watch the sunset over the rolling Mendip Hills around you. Floor to ceiling glass doors open up to blend indoors with outdoors and mean you can enjoy the view even when the weather is moody and dramatic, from the comfort of the sofa. The kitchen has everything you need for family meals (macaroni cheese with oodles of Cheddar cheese, perhaps?) and you’ll soon drift off to the land of nod in sprawling king-size beds and peaceful surrounds.

Escaping into the English countryside for a weekend (or two) is exactly the sort of thing Trailblazer Cottage was made for. This is a beautifully intimate retreat for two, perfect for those who love the idea of taking short trips to the neighbouring towns and sampling the farmers' markets in and around Cheddar — but it's also perfect for those who just want to relax. Staying here might make you change your adventurous plans and simply lounge on the decked terrace with a good book and a glass of nice wine, contemplating whether three sessions in the hot tub per day is just a little too much. It isn't. With a variety of fresh seasonal produce on offer in the area, every meal can be special and you've got a modern metro-tiled kitchen to try them all out. When the weather is less than Mediterranean, stay indoors and test the swanky pedestal bathtub for a spa-like experience and enjoy a movie night on the cosy sofa. When the weather permits, you can admire the sunset and sunrise from every room in the house as well. Light pours in through the French doors, extending the living space out to the great outdoors. Speaking of, go hiking along the sublime Cheddar Gorge, only a six-minute drive from home. It's well worth a trip.

This cottage is only a five-minute drive from the town's shops and eateries, while further afield, Bruton, Wells, and the Mendip Hills are all within easy reach. We're smitten with the views back home – nothing beats waking up to rolling fields. The second bedroom has a triple bunk well-suited for little ones, and the living area has a gas-effect fireplace for cosying up. A small dog is welcome to tag along, though it's worth noting that there isn't much outdoor space here.

Renovated to the highest standards by the current owners, this gorgeous former rectory is the perfect place for a large family retreat. Dating back to the seventeenth century, the home is built from local honey-coloured stone and faces south across the Somerset countryside. Seven acres of grounds are dotted with chestnut trees and rolling lawns, while there’s also a children’s play area, a heated swimming pool and a croquet lawn, so there's no risk of running out of things to do. During the summer, the terraces are particularly inviting, while the clear skies provide fantastic stargazing opportunities come nighttime. Meanwhile, in winter, the thought of a brisk walk followed by lunch at the local pub is hard to resist — heading straight north from the property will get you to the pretty brooks that run off the River Cary, while the nearby villages of Corton Denham and Babcary are both home to excellent watering holes. The idyllic market town of Castle Cary is a ten-minute drive away, and just beyond that lies Bruton, which has been quietly remaking itself as a haven for artists, foodies and creatives. Located between the two towns, The Newt in Somerset is an extensive country estate, complete with fascinating cider-making and gardening exhibits, a Roman villa museum and plenty of parkland to explore.
