The fact that this timber-framed building is fuelled exclusively by renewable resources and built with ecology in mind makes staying here even sweeter. This bright and gorgeous cabin is equipped with everything you need to relax and tune into nature, starting with the covered outdoor hot tub and a bright open-plan living space that will protect you from the elements. During the colder months, the wood-burning stove provides the perfect atmosphere for a night in, and the fact that the cabin is encased in glass from two sides means that you'll always have a great view of the countryside. The nearby village of Holcombe Rogus has lots of beautiful nature to explore. However, it's a great jumping-off point for trips further afield. The city of Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away if you want to spend an afternoon in a more urban environment, while day trips to the stunning beaches of the north and south coasts are well within reach, as are Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks.

The huge enclosed garden offers stunning green views over the surrounding fields, as well as several hangouts where you can put your feet up and relax — from the little dining spot to the luxurious jacuzzi (this is covered, so you can enjoy the water and the fresh air whatever the weather). You'll also be sharing your space with some beautiful flowering fruit trees, so you're more than encouraged to grab an apple in the morning when the season is right. The insides are all open-plan so that you always have the best natural light, and in the evenings, you can curl up with a good book by the wood-burning stove when the weather is chilly. Nearby, you’ll find the beginning of the Grand Union Canal, which makes for a great walk. As you can see, there's always plenty to do in the area, but you can also drive to Exeter if you're in the mood for some urban exploration.

Each of the two bedrooms offers excellent views over the private Italianate courtyard and top lake that makes up part of the sprawling thirty-two-acre shared grounds, providing the ideal vistas to wake up to each morning. 

Enjoy breakfast in the traditional country kitchen before you head out for the day. Wander the acres of lawns, woods, and pasture, as you take a leisurely stroll around the lake with your furry four-legged friend, or venture to the nearby Honiton – a historic town packed with antique shops, and great bridleways for scenic walks. What’s more, Exeter – with its well-known racecourse and cultural centre featuring a beautiful cathedral – isn’t far away either. 

For dinnertime, return home, fire up the barbecue, and dine alfresco in the Italianate courtyard, which is accompanied by lake views. When the evening grows chilly, head back inside via the large wooden entry doors. From the moment you see the grand stone exterior and cobbled courtyard, you’ll know that this ever-so-charming home is steeped in history. It's a former malthouse that’s over 300 years old and filled with traditional features. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun. You don’t have to go far to continue the historical theme, as the pub next door is one of the oldest in the country and has been the resting place for many a monarch visiting the area since the 15th century. The surrounding county town, Frome, just a fifteen-minute drive away, was voted one of the best places to live in the UK - explore the rich history, shop at independent boutiques, buy fresh produce at the local market or dine at one of the many eateries dotted around nearby.

Through The Ages

One of the things that we like most about The Austen is the way that it has retained its sense of history. The building is over 250 years old, and the hosts have managed to keep many of the original features, including the wood panelling, fireplaces, and Georgian shutters. The home is also in the very centre of Bath. As in, less than five minutes on foot to the Roman baths themselves (and the same distance to the station, which while less glamorous, is also worth knowing). Even if it weren’t kept so well, it would be a good base for exploring the city, but as it is, staying here is simply a delight. 


The Austen

Part of a manor that dates back to the sixteenth century, this beautiful listed barn conversion is not your average country cottage. With enough design credentials for a magazine spread, the home mixes old and new with aplomb. Gather in the grand room to see a space with cathedral-like ceilings and antler chandeliers, with pops of bright modernity from the aquamarine walls and huge pieces of artwork hanging on the walls. There are cosier spots too, including bedrooms that have been tucked up in the rafters ensuring a snug night's sleep, as well as a log-burning fire in the second living room.
