When it's time to embrace the great outdoors, hire a rowing boat, paddleboard, or kayak to launch off the tarn. Tee off from the local golf course - it overlooks the cottages. Then take a stroll around the 1.3-mile tarn through the mature woodland. One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

Set in the picturesque Teesdale landscape, this historic property is located near the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Park, as well as the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests can admire the ornate roof beams carved from oak trees felled over 400 years ago in the dining hall, and relax in the cosy living room with a wood-burning stove set within a Tudor fireplace. Shhh. Can you hear that sound? Us neither. Quietness and tranquility await in this truly extraordinary country cottage in the North Yorkshire dales. The home's glorious traditional features - original stone floors, warm wooden beams, a roaring fireplace - are full of character, but it's the styling of this home that will make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. In the welcoming living room, the exquisitely-soft turquoise sofa is the perfect place to while away the hours with a book from the well-stocked bookshelf, and Eastern-inspired touches (including Buddha statues) add to the sense of calm. The kitchen, with its white marble countertops and exposed stone walls, is the ideal spot to cook up a rib-sticking meal. The bedrooms are elegant but simply furnished, with mustard yellow blankets and a dried flower wreath creating little moments of joy. But perhaps the real peace here comes from the scenery – this home is in the Yorkshire Dales’ Arkengarthdale, a beautifully remote location where you can hike for miles without seeing another soul. Your nearest village is Piercebridge, situated three miles away, with its own farm shop and proper pub. Further afield, the Yorkshire Dales, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Barnard Castle are all within a forty-five-minute drive – perfect for family days out in the fresh air.

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.

If you did want to explore the undulating hills of the Yorkshire Dales, they're under half an hour away. You can take a few days to master the hillside or simply just spend an afternoon amidst the sea of green. 

Of course, you don't have to visit them at all – various walking trails decorate the landscape near your home. Simply set out in the mornings to discover the local rural charm.

When you're out in the nearby towns and villages, make sure to stop off for a quick pint at the cosy pubs. You can also find a selection of cute shops and authentic stores selling clothes, food and souvenirs. 

Once you're back at the home, snuggle into its tranquil comfort. Catch a film on the TV, sit out on the garden table with a cup of coffee or just read a book on the rustic bench. Picturesque and peaceful, it's an idyllic spot in the heart of the rural North of England.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Or on a chilly evening, it’s even better for stargazing with a hot toddy in hand. Inside, the living space is a welcoming mix of old and new. From near the house, you’re able to follow walking trails along the river, allowing you to unwind and rejuvenate in the fresh country air. But the home itself also offers plenty of opportunity for peace and quiet. 

Between striking colour choices, plush furniture, captivating art, and an outdoor area that offers sunshine and privacy in equal measure, you can find the space to sit quietly with a cup of coffee, throw your phone aside and enjoy a board game or puzzle, dine together at the beautifully made dining table, and lie in late. Treat yourself to a bubble bath and glass of wine, read in the kitchen nook, get competitive in the games room, and sit out after dark to admire the brightening night sky.   

Supply runs can be made in the little market town, where cobbled streets will lead you past cafes and artisans, with Richmond Castle always looming in the background. Pick up specialty cheeses, crackers and wine to take back for an alfresco cheese board, but not before visiting Richmond Castle and stopping off at the Georgian Sundials on the way back. 

As a Grade II listed building, there is undoubtedly plenty of history between the walls of this restored home, but staying here also gives you the opportunity to make your own.

Set in the Lake District, this home has been featured on the TV show Extraordinary Escapes, and we can see why. Situated on the shores of Lake Windermere, it has wonderful views and an acre of garden, as well as several balconies. There’s a terrace for dining and relaxing, as well as a jetty where you can moor a boat or kayak. The interior of this home is impressive too with its designer furniture and ski lodge feel. A home cinema and a games room with a bespoke 8-foot pool table will keep everyone entertained. And all the bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows – two also have oval baths overlooking the lake. It's easy to forget you're in North West England from this stunning home in Bowness-on-Windermere, as its modern mid-century interiors look straight out of '70s Hollywood. While the Lake District presents a vast array of shops, pubs and restaurants to try out (the nearest pub is just 500 yards away), you won't find bars and clubs open until the early hours. That's why the entertainment features of this home have been carefully selected to ensure guests are having fun around the clock. From the basement spa and games room, you'll find not only a pool table but a private hot tub jacuzzi and an old school home cinema too.

Although with so much to see and do in and around Windermere, the best experiences had here are when work is left behind. Set off on walks amidst nature, knowing that there'll be plenty of lakeside cafes and restaurants en route for leisurely pit stops. And since the rest of the Lake District can be explored by car or by buses running regularly from Bowness Bay pier (just a ten-minute walk away), there's room to make your stay as active and adventurous as you please.

The Five Eyes

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

From Fells

Barnard Castle is a historic market town that offers an equally delightful experience for culture and history lovers, as well as catering to outdoorsy types. From this home, art exhibitions at The Bowes Museum are just a sixteen-minute walk, the town’s 12th-century castle is just five, and the incredible hiking spots of the Yorkshire Dales are a half-hour drive. With all this excitement to fill your days, you’ll love coming back to this gorgeous bolthole where you can take refuge on chilly, English evenings. Past the traditional stone exterior of this house, it’s quite a different story indoors. Modern, fresh, and funky, the living space is a surprisingly eclectic mix of velvet furniture, abstract art, patterned wallpaper, and pops of orange features. We love the rocking chair – the perfect perch for sipping Earl Grey after a day of hiking (or perhaps a nip of gin would help you warm up better). After dusk, head upstairs to the bedrooms to get cosy under crushed velvet throws and relax against the cushioned headboard, ready to do it all again tomorrow.

Perched on the Scottish borders, you’re perfectly placed for day trips to North Scotland, Cumbria’s Hadrian’s Wall, and the coast of Solway Firth – all just forty minutes’ drive away. Be sure to ask your hosts about the fascinating past of the estate – once a no man’s land and a haven to criminals. The host’s family owns the estate these days, so you’re in safe hands here. Follow the woodland path from the cottage and discover a wood-burning hot tub beneath a canopy of leaves. We hear watching the sunset peek through the trees as the woodland bats begin to fly is magical. Then fire up the barbecue for an evening dining under the stars. During the day, head down to the crystal-clear waters of the River Esk and over the suspension bridge for brisk walks in the estate's grounds. Then head home to get toasty beside the log burner before a long soak in the rolltop bath found in the elegant bedroom upstairs.
