We love the options for walking here, whether that be following the trails from the house and into the Yorkshire Dales, or driving to the nearby North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) or to the Lake District national park. In an hour's drive, you will reach the iconic Lake Windermere – over 10 miles of water, and also the spot which inspired poet William Wordsworth and more recently, a song written by Taylor Swift.

This twin listing combines two of our homes – Brockram Barn & Keld Barn – totalling eight bedrooms which can accommodate up to sixteen guests. The sprawling outdoor space and the fact that it's set over two properties means that there's plenty of room to catch a moment for yourself, even during a large family get-together or a company offsite. But, of course, if you want to come together, there's ample space for that too. The interiors are decorated in a modern country style, with soaring ceilings, beautiful exposed beams and stunning stone floors. Both homes have huge common areas and large connected gardens where you can sit back with a glass of something special and watch the sun sink over the Cumbrian countryside. If the urge to explore should hit, then you've got the Yorkshire Dales, North Pennines and Lake District within a thirty-minute drive, while the port town of Middlesbrough is a little over an hour away.

This cottage couldn't get more idyllic if it tried. Bask in the gorgeous period features, and when you're relaxing after a big meal, open the French doors in the kitchen to let in the tranquil sounds of the River Lyvennet. The dark oak beams, rustic wood-burner and comfy armchairs keep things extra cosy inside, while the spacious patio terrace makes for an ideal spot to wine, dine and relax outside. The cottage is set in the village of King's Meaburn and it's a short walk to the local pub, which serves up hearty roasts and real ales. There's plenty to explore in the backyard - including the river, paths to walking trails, and a lawn that is perfect for games of cricket or croquet. For adventures further afield, this area is rich in history and choice. Lake Windermere is a forty-five-minute drive away, where you can hire a rowing boat and try your best at reciting the Romantic poetry the lake inspired, or potter around one of the many museums. The grand Acorn Bank is not far, with a history revolving around the Knights Templar. For cyclists, routes run all around Eden Valley, with stunning views of villages and countryside. Surrounded by the North Pennines, Lake District, and Yorkshire Dales, this home is perfect for exploring some of the UK's most beautiful national parks.

A picture-perfect countryside retreat, this barn-style home is surrounded by sheep-dotted hills and offers exquisite rural views in every direction. Homely, inviting and rustic, this place oozes comfortable luxury. It's an excellent option for families looking to escape the hustle and bustle. There's a lot to shout about here – we loved the amount of natural light streaming through the lancet windows and skylights, as well as the beamed ceilings, wood-burning stove and quirky antler chandelier in the living area. We also appreciated the thoughtful welcome gift, which has all sorts of treats and a good bottle of wine to wash them all down with after a long day travelling to this remote spot. Play a game of table football in the afternoon, then head into nearby Kirkby Stephen – a small village just a ten-minute drive away – to pick up some local produce and cook up a delicious dinner in the modern kitchen to savour outside on a long summer's evening. Round off the night with a dip in the hot tub beneath a canopy of stars. This far from any major city, light pollution simply isn't an issue. With the beautiful scenery of Eden Valley right on your doorstep and world-famous attractions like the Lake District, Pennines, and Yorkshire Dales within a half-hour drive, you'll be spoiled for choice for things to do in the great outdoors.

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.

This charming barn conversion in the peaceful village of Orton is ideal for anyone looking for a restful escape in the Cumbrian countryside. In the living space, there’s underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove for warming up after long walks or bike rides – while outside, you’ll find a picnic bench – the perfect spot to enjoy a light lunch on sunny days. If you’re staying with furry friends, you’ll need to keep an eye on them in the garden due to the livestock in the adjacent field.

At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Inside, the traditional theme continues with chunky beams and vintage furniture. We love the glossy, lacquered wooden pieces in the lounge, as well as the understated chandelier bringing a romantic glow in the evening. Take a look around while you wait for the wood-burning stove to heat up – the bedroom is quite magnificent. A luxurious cushioned headboard, freestanding copper bathtub, and private balcony set over the water are just a few of the fabulous features. Nestled deep in the countryside, Brownber Hall is a beautifully reimagined Victorian country home with enough space to accommodate up to fifteen guests. Thanks to your wonderful hosts, Peter and Amanda, the home has been lovingly restored over the last few years to create a space that is both traditional and completely of its time. With two large sitting rooms and eight bedrooms, there is plenty of space for everyone to spread out, or to come together for evenings filled with family games and memorable meals. The kitchen is fully equipped and thanks to its open floor plan, it’s also a wonderfully social space. Guests lucky enough to stay here can also enjoy the expansive garden. Equipped with a barbecue and a fire pit, it's a fabulous space in which to sit back and relax at the end of the day. Here you're situated just between the Dales and the Lakes, so it's a popular spot for keen walkers and lovers of a good country pub. Smardale Nature Reserve is just a ten-minute drive away, as is the village of Kirkby Stephen.

Brownber Hall

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

Green is the theme at this beautifully restored historic farmhouse; rolling pastures all around and exquisite emerald, olive and moss hues inside. Recently featured in Elle Décor, the owner is an interior designer and a lovely host to boot. Welcoming your whole brood and then some, there’s plenty of space for everyone to spread out in the three gorgeous sitting rooms, seven individually styled bedrooms, large bespoke, country kitchen and expansive garden. Those travelling with young children will love the playroom, chock-full of games and toys to keep them quiet for hours on end. There is billiards and table tennis in the outhouse if the big kids want to get involved, too. A boot room makes a no-stress entrance for muddy wellies after yomps through the surrounding countryside and the endless lawns call for picnics and croquet in the sunshine. Your nearest village is Piercebridge, situated three miles away, with its own farm shop and proper pub. Further afield, the Yorkshire Dales, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Barnard Castle are all within a forty-five-minute drive – perfect for family days out in the fresh air.

When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

When you're out in the nearby towns and villages, make sure to stop off for a quick pint at the cosy pubs. You can also find a selection of cute shops and authentic stores selling clothes, food and souvenirs.

Seeking a cosy couple’s retreat with nature on your doorstep? This contemporary cottage in Ambleside more than fits the bill. From the open-plan living area, you can admire the countryside views while snuggling up in front of the wood burner. Step outside, and there’s a hot tub waiting to help you unwind – just the spot for stargazing after a busy day. If you can tear yourself away, a trip to Lake Windermere is a must, where you can while away the hours hiking the shores or on a boat cruise across the water. Pets are also welcome to tag along for a small fee, and you'll find plenty of dog walks on your doorstep.

Whistling Waters

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

Wonder Wall

Once the hunting lodge for the Duke of Norfolk, this home in the Cumbrian countryside has a sweeping view of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. To make the most of the vantage point, the open dining and living room is up on the top floor, so you can dine and recline with a sublime view – perfect with the wood-burner crackling away. The covered balcony was made for sunny days and the ground-floor bedrooms have French windows leading to a cobbled patio and lawn. You can walk to the edge of Ullswater, or perhaps explore the winding roads on two wheels – bicycle storage is included.

The Cumbrian Hearth

This charming Tudor castle, built in 1560, has been fully restored to create the perfect romantic retreat for two. Set in the picturesque Teesdale landscape, this historic property is located near the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Park, as well as the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests can admire the ornate roof beams carved from oak trees felled over 400 years ago in the dining hall, and relax in the cosy living room with a wood-burning stove set within a Tudor fireplace. The bedroom features a double bed on an oak floor adorned with Persian rugs and offers stunning views of the walled garden and the high moors beyond. The property also boasts an enclosed courtyard garden and two designated parking spaces. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome for a small additional charge.

Right on the outskirts of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and on the banks of the River Swale, this beautiful home certainly ticks the box for a picturesque setting. From near the house, you’re able to follow walking trails along the river, allowing you to unwind and rejuvenate in the fresh country air. But the home itself also offers plenty of opportunity for peace and quiet. 

Between striking colour choices, plush furniture, captivating art, and an outdoor area that offers sunshine and privacy in equal measure, you can find the space to sit quietly with a cup of coffee, throw your phone aside and enjoy a board game or puzzle, dine together at the beautifully made dining table, and lie in late. Treat yourself to a bubble bath and glass of wine, read in the kitchen nook, get competitive in the games room, and sit out after dark to admire the brightening night sky.   

Supply runs can be made in the little market town, where cobbled streets will lead you past cafes and artisans, with Richmond Castle always looming in the background. Pick up specialty cheeses, crackers and wine to take back for an alfresco cheese board, but not before visiting Richmond Castle and stopping off at the Georgian Sundials on the way back. 

As a Grade II listed building, there is undoubtedly plenty of history between the walls of this restored home, but staying here also gives you the opportunity to make your own.


Olde Stone

Cloaked in ivy, this home's stone-clad facade charms from the outset. You'll find it situated in an old school house in the heart of Richmond, brimming with character. After a restful slumber in the sumptuous bedrooms – dressed with premium linens and eco-friendly Harrison Spinks mattresses – brew your morning fix with the Smeg coffee machine before slipping out for a stroll. Head across Mercury Bridge and towards the Old Richmond station, where an art gallery, three-screen cinema an award-winning array of eateries is sure to keep your clan entertained. If you fancy venturing further afield, lace up your walking boots and hike through the wild, untouched beauty of the Yorkshire Dales – a twenty-minute drive away.

A peaceful retreat in the Lake District, this home is perfect for those looking for a relaxing break close to the Great Outdoors. The apartment is in Staveley, a short drive from Kendal and Windermere, and in a great location for hiking and cycling trails. The apartment is equipped with everything you might need for a fuss-free stay, and even boasts a private patio that looks out over the River Gowan. Nearby, you’ll have traditional pubs, cafes, and independent shops – what more could you ask for?

Surrounded by a rich herbaceous garden, this rural farmhouse located in South Cumbria, close to the Lake District National Park, is picturesque. In the summer months the wisteria is in full bloom, so breathe in the scent of the flowers and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature as you relax in your private courtyard with a G&T in hand – don’t forget a sprig of rosemary from the herb garden. For warmer evenings, fire up the barbecue and enjoy the views across the farmland.
