This quaint Lakeland cottage couldn’t get cosier if it tried. Beautifully renovated, this period cottage in the small hamlet of Clappersgate is rich in history and comfort. We love the traditional beams, wood-burning fireplace and AGA range cooker that make this home feel like a true rural retreat. 

Mornings here are particularly lovely. Your plush bed will be hard to get out of, but the views of Lake Windermere peeking in through the curtains will be sure to encourage you up. Sip your coffee out on the patio, listen to the bird songs and feel the warm morning sun on your face. The country-style kitchen is a pure delight to enjoy a hearty breakfast in – you’ll need some fuel for walking the local trails after all. And once you’ve returned home, boots glazed with Lake District earth, nothing will feel quite as comforting as stretching out on the sofa, feet toasting by the crackling wood burner. 

This area is rich in history and nature. Lake Windermere is a short drive away, where you can rent a rowing boat and contemplate the surroundings that Beatrix Potter’s novels took their inspiration from, or head to the World of Beatrix Potter to see the stories brought to life. The Ambleside Roman Fort, built in the 2nd century under Hadrian’s rule, is just a short drive away. While for cyclists, routes run all around the Langdales, with impressive views of the mountainous peaks and running rivers.

In a part of the UK with such stunning scenery, it really pays to have a home with some outdoor space here. Luckily, from this apartment's balcony, you get beautiful views of Lake Windermere and the hills surrounding the waters.

If it's ever too cold to use this space, you can head back inside and sit by the bay window, from which you get a similarly swoon-worthy panorama. Once you can tear your eyes away, you'll probably notice that the interior looks pretty modern — that's because it underwent a complete refurbishment in late 2021. The large kitchen and its collection of top-of-the-range appliances are particularly impressive, as are the pristine bathrooms.

When you're in the mood to see what the Lake District has to offer, you're in an excellent position to do so. Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. The nearby town of Ambleside has a cinema, cafes and even a Roman fort to explore, too.

Luckily the host provides complimentary chocolates for you to pocket as you head into the Lake District for a day of hiking.

Step back in time with a stay in this Victorian manor. Set on a private estate, with surrounding countryside views, it’s the picture of a countryside escape. When you can pull yourself away from the scenery, there’s also a cinema and games room. There’s plenty of space to spread out, including a snug, dining area, and living area. The living space is a little dated, but we think it adds to the traditional charm. Being a Victorian home, expect some low ceilings and uneven floors. The garden is on multiple levels, too, but it’s a great spot for the children to run around. Just keep an eye on them around the woodlands – there are a few fallen trees.

The views over Grasmere Lake, and to the fells beyond from this sympathetically converted stone barn’s designated patio are breathtaking. Enjoy them from the picnic bench with a glass of wine – we didn’t want to leave this spot. Heading back through the barn doors reveals a spacious open plan living space with characterful beams and plenty of roof lights flood this charming space with light. Choose a book from the cute nook and relax on the comfy sofa. This place is the perfect Cumbrian retreat for a family or friends.

Although with so much to see and do in and around Windermere, the best experiences had here are when work is left behind.
