This cottage couldn't get more idyllic if it tried. There's plenty to explore in the backyard - including the river, paths to walking trails, and a lawn that is perfect for games of cricket or croquet. For adventures further afield, this area is rich in history and choice. Lake Windermere is a forty-five-minute drive away, where you can hire a rowing boat and try your best at reciting the Romantic poetry the lake inspired, or potter around one of the many museums. The grand Acorn Bank is not far, with a history revolving around the Knights Templar. For cyclists, routes run all around Eden Valley, with stunning views of villages and countryside. Surrounded by the North Pennines, Lake District, and Yorkshire Dales, this home is perfect for exploring some of the UK's most beautiful national parks.

We love the options for walking here, whether that be following the trails from the house and into the Yorkshire Dales, or driving to the nearby North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) or to the Lake District national park. In an hour's drive, you will reach the iconic Lake Windermere – over 10 miles of water, and also the spot which inspired poet William Wordsworth and more recently, a song written by Taylor Swift.

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

This charming barn conversion in the peaceful village of Orton is ideal for anyone looking for a restful escape in the Cumbrian countryside. In the living space, there’s underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove for warming up after long walks or bike rides – while outside, you’ll find a picnic bench – the perfect spot to enjoy a light lunch on sunny days. If you’re staying with furry friends, you’ll need to keep an eye on them in the garden due to the livestock in the adjacent field.

At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

What's better than a stay in a luxurious Plum-worthy home? A stay in two luxurious Plum-worthy homes – of course. This twin listing combines two of our homes – Brockram Barn & Keld Barn – totalling eight bedrooms which can accommodate up to sixteen guests. The sprawling outdoor space and the fact that it's set over two properties means that there's plenty of room to catch a moment for yourself, even during a large family get-together or a company offsite. But, of course, if you want to come together, there's ample space for that too. The interiors are decorated in a modern country style, with soaring ceilings, beautiful exposed beams and stunning stone floors. Both homes have huge common areas and large connected gardens where you can sit back with a glass of something special and watch the sun sink over the Cumbrian countryside. If the urge to explore should hit, then you've got the Yorkshire Dales, North Pennines and Lake District within a thirty-minute drive, while the port town of Middlesbrough is a little over an hour away.

Brockram & Keld Barn

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

The Lake Gatehouse

Some of the Lake District’s most striking scenery can be found at Ullswater, with its mountainous landscape and unusual z-shaped, ‘ribbon lake’, which is the second largest in the region. But even better than simply visiting this beautiful spot, you can see it all from the windows of this lakeside home. Although it’s just a five-minute drive from the quaint town of Pooley Bridge, this home feels truly rural and isolated. Park up the 4x4 in the gravel drive and head into this warm and welcoming abode. Light up the wood-burning stove in the plush lounge, with its horseshoe sofa that can fit the entire family. Or you can even have your own private hideaway in the second sitting room, with yet another fireplace – this time a sleek, modern hearth set into the wall. For balmy English evenings, another space can be found outdoors, with your very own patio complete with comfy garden furniture. Alfresco drinking and dining will certainly be on the cards out here. While you can see the water from the comfort of your own home, it’s just a seven-minute walk down to Ullswater Marina.

Once the hunting lodge for the Duke of Norfolk, this home in the Cumbrian countryside has a sweeping view of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. To make the most of the vantage point, the open dining and living room is up on the top floor, so you can dine and recline with a sublime view – perfect with the wood-burner crackling away. The covered balcony was made for sunny days and the ground-floor bedrooms have French windows leading to a cobbled patio and lawn. You can walk to the edge of Ullswater, or perhaps explore the winding roads on two wheels – bicycle storage is included.

There's a lot to shout about here – we loved the amount of natural light streaming through the lancet windows and skylights, as well as the beamed ceilings, wood-burning stove and quirky antler chandelier in the living area. We also appreciated the thoughtful welcome gift, which has all sorts of treats and a good bottle of wine to wash them all down with after a long day travelling to this remote spot. Play a game of table football in the afternoon, then head into nearby Kirkby Stephen – a small village just a ten-minute drive away – to pick up some local produce and cook up a delicious dinner in the modern kitchen to savour outside on a long summer's evening. Round off the night with a dip in the hot tub beneath a canopy of stars. This far from any major city, light pollution simply isn't an issue. With the beautiful scenery of Eden Valley right on your doorstep and world-famous attractions like the Lake District, Pennines, and Yorkshire Dales within a half-hour drive, you'll be spoiled for choice for things to do in the great outdoors.

A lot of thought has gone into the design of this home. There’s a Morsø log burner and designer furniture in the Scandinavian-style living room and luxurious beds with Egyptian cotton linen. Sliding doors from the living space lead to a fantastic social outdoor area with seating and dining, as well as a fireplace and barbecue. You can’t come to the Lake District without exploring the area – so have a stroll around Bowness-on-Windermere’s streets filled with boutiques, cafes, and pubs. Shhh. Can you hear that sound? Us neither. Quietness and tranquility await in this truly extraordinary country cottage in the North Yorkshire dales. The home's glorious traditional features - original stone floors, warm wooden beams, a roaring fireplace - are full of character, but it's the styling of this home that will make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. In the welcoming living room, the exquisitely-soft turquoise sofa is the perfect place to while away the hours with a book from the well-stocked bookshelf, and Eastern-inspired touches (including Buddha statues) add to the sense of calm. The kitchen, with its white marble countertops and exposed stone walls, is the ideal spot to cook up a rib-sticking meal. The bedrooms are elegant but simply furnished, with mustard yellow blankets and a dried flower wreath creating little moments of joy. But perhaps the real peace here comes from the scenery – this home is in the Yorkshire Dales’ Arkengarthdale, a beautifully remote location where you can hike for miles without seeing another soul. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Or on a chilly evening, it’s even better for stargazing with a hot toddy in hand. Inside, the living space is a welcoming mix of old and new. The stylish, light-grey kitchen is understated and modern. But we love the traditional countryside features such as flagstone flooring and a sandstone, inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove. And there’s plenty of history to discover outside the home too – take a thirty-five-minute walk to the 2000-year-old Chesters Roman Fort and Museum on Hadrian’s Wall.

Green is the theme at this beautifully restored historic farmhouse; rolling pastures all around and exquisite emerald, olive and moss hues inside. Recently featured in Elle Décor, the owner is an interior designer and a lovely host to boot. Welcoming your whole brood and then some, there’s plenty of space for everyone to spread out in the three gorgeous sitting rooms, seven individually styled bedrooms, large bespoke, country kitchen and expansive garden. Those travelling with young children will love the playroom, chock-full of games and toys to keep them quiet for hours on end. There is billiards and table tennis in the outhouse if the big kids want to get involved, too. A boot room makes a no-stress entrance for muddy wellies after yomps through the surrounding countryside and the endless lawns call for picnics and croquet in the sunshine. Your nearest village is Piercebridge, situated three miles away, with its own farm shop and proper pub. Further afield, the Yorkshire Dales, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Barnard Castle are all within a forty-five-minute drive – perfect for family days out in the fresh air.

Thanks to your wonderful hosts, Peter and Amanda, the home has been lovingly restored over the last few years to create a space that is both traditional and completely of its time. With two large sitting rooms and eight bedrooms, there is plenty of space for everyone to spread out, or to come together for evenings filled with family games and memorable meals. The kitchen is fully equipped and thanks to its open floor plan, it’s also a wonderfully social space. Guests lucky enough to stay here can also enjoy the expansive garden. Equipped with a barbecue and a fire pit, it's a fabulous space in which to sit back and relax at the end of the day. Here you're situated just between the Dales and the Lakes, so it's a popular spot for keen walkers and lovers of a good country pub. Smardale Nature Reserve is just a ten-minute drive away, as is the village of Kirkby Stephen.

From near the house, you’re able to follow walking trails along the river, allowing you to unwind and rejuvenate in the fresh country air. But the home itself also offers plenty of opportunity for peace and quiet.

Of course, you don't have to visit them at all – various walking trails decorate the landscape near your home. Simply set out in the mornings to discover the local rural charm.

When you're out in the nearby towns and villages, make sure to stop off for a quick pint at the cosy pubs. You can also find a selection of cute shops and authentic stores selling clothes, food and souvenirs.
