Brownber House has been designed with you in mind, so comfort is at the forefront here. Whether it's the welcome hamper of freshly-baked sourdough, a jar of award-winning marmalade and homemade cakes and biscuits or the local food deliveries that can be ordered straight to your door – from longhorn beef bourguignon to home-cooked pasta – everything is right at your fingertips. And after an explorative day at the Yorkshire Dales National Park, only a seventeen-minute drive away, there's nothing better than a delicious meal brought straight to your dining table. Or else, fire up the barbecue and cook for yourself out in the private garden, before toasting a few marshmallows around the firepit and reliving the best parts of your rural getaway. 

Brownber House

Some of the Lake District’s most striking scenery can be found at Ullswater, with its mountainous landscape and unusual z-shaped, ‘ribbon lake’, which is the second largest in the region. But even better than simply visiting this beautiful spot, you can see it all from the windows of this lakeside home. Although it’s just a five-minute drive from the quaint town of Pooley Bridge, this home feels truly rural and isolated. Park up the 4x4 in the gravel drive and head into this warm and welcoming abode. Light up the wood-burning stove in the plush lounge, with its horseshoe sofa that can fit the entire family. Or you can even have your own private hideaway in the second sitting room, with yet another fireplace – this time a sleek, modern hearth set into the wall. For balmy English evenings, another space can be found outdoors, with your very own patio complete with comfy garden furniture. Alfresco drinking and dining will certainly be on the cards out here. While you can see the water from the comfort of your own home, it’s just a seven-minute walk down to Ullswater Marina.

The Ribbon Lake

Slow down and start living the country life at this newly-built cottage set deep in rural North Yorkshire on a private gated estate. Surrounded by green paddocks and grazing horses, its setting is postcard-perfect, and things only get better inside. Elegantly styled into a luxurious hideaway, contemporary artwork and statement lighting bring a flare of modernity, while supped-up bathrooms and a bubbly hot tub outside dial up the wow factor.

In summer months, slide back the bi-fold doors and pad out across the Indian sandstone terrace outside to drink up the morning's rays over coffees or enjoy a glass of something bubbly as the sun goes down. Friends sharing will love how spaced out the bedrooms feel, each on their own floor. Kitted out with eleven bedrooms (ten en-suite, plus a large house bathroom) and a made-for-action kitchen (we're talking three ovens, two large induction hobs, two dishwashers and two wine fridges), it's prime for a large multi-generational family gathering. Add to that a cinema room, a snooker room, and a leisure suite with two side-by-side hot tubs outside, and there are plenty of reasons to linger here. Should you fancy a change of scene, the local village pub and shop in Sedbergh are within walking distance (half an hour on foot), and there are hiking trails, waterfalls, and caves begging to be explored.

The Fell View

Like red squirrels, idyllic and understated elegance is a rarity nowadays. That’s why it’s so pleasing to find both in this home, which is set in the serene wilderness of the Eden Valley.
