Steeped in ancient history within its 13th-century City Walls, the centre of York is a hub of historical landmarks from all eras. Whether you’re hoping to visit a gothic cathedral from the 1400s, or a museum telling tales of Viking life in 900 AD, you’ll have a successful stay in this magical town. Just a fourteen-minute walk from all the delights of the city centre, this apartment sits in a perfect location for discovering York’s many sights. But to give you a break from medieval history, the decor is modern, yet opulent. We love the bright, open-plan living space, with neutral walls and stylish charcoal kitchen cabinets. Near the large windows, transparent, perspex dining chairs with chrome frames contrast beautifully against the regal purple of the sofa. And the luxurious velvet headboard in the bedroom is simply made for a peaceful slumber. In the morning, while you’ve got ancient and urban sights aplenty, there’s also a natural side to the area. Not only is your home just an eight-minute walk to the banks of the River Foss, but within an hour by car, you can lose yourself in the depths of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Milk & Sugar

Bright and welcoming, this house is a great base for exploring historic York. The decked garden is a bonus for a city break, and the modern, clean interiors make for an attractive home-from-home. There’s plenty of room for everyone to dine together or unwind in the lounge, so you won’t feel crowded. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, so this is an ideal choice for a large group – you don’t want to be queuing for the shower when you could be meandering along the Shambles, just fifteen minutes away. 

The House of York

Watch life go by along York's medieval city walls from the private balcony that wraps the entire length of this bright, modern apartment. Dining alfresco on sunny evenings, as dusk settles over the historic rooftops in the distance, is a rare treat for a home this centrally located. Inside, expect pristine interiors and all the home comforts you could need. We’re particularly impressed with the master bedroom with views over the city, complete with a king-size bed donned with crisp, snow-white linens. And thanks to its unique position away from traffic noise, you’ll be sure to bank a peaceful night’s sleep here. When it’s time to set off exploring, it’s hard to imagine a better location. You’re just a short walk from the city’s historical hotspots, including York Minister (sixteen minutes on foot) and the vibrant Shambles Market (ten minutes on foot). When thought’s turn to food, lose yourself in the labyrinth of streets wall-to-wall with bustling restaurants and traditional pubs. And no visit to York would be complete without a visit to the institution that is Betty’s Café Tea Rooms (just fourteen minutes on foot) for a fat rascal scone and a side portion of Yorkshire nostalgia.

Wall to Wall

There's a timeless quality to this home, just a short walk from the city centre. Part of a period terrace, it's as pretty as a picture – both inside and out. You're spoilt for choice here, with two sitting rooms to choose between. Both super comfortable and classically furnished, there's the front room with its arched window and cosy sofas, and the former dining room with its armchairs and log burning stove. Giving the option of letting the youngsters have their own living space, it's a handy arrangement made possible by the kitchen extension. In this modern space, you'll have an excellent, fully kitted-out kitchen (hello range cooker!) and a dining area that opens out to the charming little courtyard. In the summer evenings, it's the perfect spot for dinner and drinks outside. With two good size bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, we didn't think this warm, welcoming home could get any better. But it can – you're welcome to bring along your pet too. 

Bellflowers at Teatime

Located on a quiet road just a stone's throw from York’s bustling city centre, this stylish apartment is a wonderful choice for a family or friends’ getaway. With a chic interior, suntrap balcony, and well-equipped kitchen, there’s everything you need for a comfortable stay.

We love how sleek and contemporary this home is, and the harmonious colour palette of mustard and dark grey makes it clear a lot of thought went into designing this city pad. It might be chic, but it’s still wonderfully homely. Whether you’re watching the TV on the plush sofa, savouring a coffee on your balcony, tucking into dinner around the dining table, or reading a book in your cosy bed, you’ll feel right at home. 

Not only is the apartment beautiful, but it’s also in a fantastic location. Nestled in a residential area but just a short walk from the city centre, you get the best of both worlds. You’ll love exploring the famous Roman walls, the Georgian architecture, and trying to tick off as many of the thirty museums as possible. If you fancy a break from the city, the Yorkshire Dales are within easy reach for long, windy walks in the countryside. However you spend the day, you’ll be glad to come home to your apartment. Take a bottle of wine to the balcony to catch the last of the afternoon sun, before heading out to discover York’s excellent culinary scene.

Seeing the Seasons

Just when you think you've seen the best views a York city bolthole could deliver, this palatial pad comes along and blows us all away. Perched high on the fifth floor of a contemporary apartment building, the city vistas across the waterways of the River Foss and to the Howardian Hills beyond are second to none.
 
Whip up breakfast in the gadget-ladened kitchen then gather your ensemble at the dining table for a lazy morning feast. Curl up on the plush sofa with a cuppa and a good book – there's Netflix at the ready too, if that's more your style. Or sneak back to bed in the boutique-style bedrooms with freshly brewed coffee and open up the Juliet balcony doors. Wherever you choose to be, those bird's eye views of river life and the city's rooftops will be right there. 

And when the medieval city finally comes calling, you won't have far to go. Thanks to its privileged setting nestled within the city's medieval walls, all the must-see sights are walkable. Get off to a flying start at York Castle, just a six-minute saunter over the Foss River.

Rising Up

Set in the city centre, just a minutes’ walk from The Shambles, this charming apartment resides in a historic building – the birthplace of Joseph Rowntree. Adorned with artefacts and old photographs, you’ll get a real sense of its history all while being central to the sights of the town. Wake up and enjoy coffee at the circular marble table alongside a hearty breakfast. When you return back at the end of the day, the living room has a deep grey sofa and a velvet blue chair to settle in as you unwind in front of the TV. There’s a pretty tiled kitchen for self-catered meals to enjoy at home. Afterwards, take a relaxing soak in the clawfoot tub and fall asleep in the navy bedroom, ready to wake up to beautiful views of the nearby gothic tower. 

All of the People

If you’re staying in York, seeing the spires of the 13th-century York Minster Cathedral from your window is akin to an Eiffel Tower view in Paris. The largest of its kind in Northern Europe, this magnificent structure is well worth a visit – just a ten-minute walk from this duplex apartment. Despite such historic surroundings, the interiors of this home are tastefully modern. As you enter through the hall, the first thing you’ll notice is a full-wall mural showing you a printed map of the entire city. After you’ve found your bearings, head onwards to the bright lounge. There’s a certain Scandi vibe created by the furnishings and colour scheme – we particularly love the yellow rug, plus matching throws and cushions. The elegant, modern armchairs make for an inviting perch where you can enjoy a proper Yorkshire brew on arrival (you might even find this in the welcome hamper from your host). But on a sunny day, you might want to take your tea out to your private balcony. Open up the French doors from the lounge, where the playful yellow colour scheme continues with a cute metal dining set – anyone for a slice of cake too?

Skyline Spires

If you’re in York for culture, history, and plenty of pub trips, then this home couldn’t be any more perfectly placed. You’ll be living a two-minute walk from York Minster, and just three from the Theatre Royal, York Art Gallery, and the watering holes of Stonegate. This ancient street, where the house is located, was once the medieval route into the city from the north. But today, it’s your route to luxe living in the city centre. A former jewellery shop, the quaint brick building still has quirky features and a creative soul. As soon as you step inside, the striking decor is sure to capture your imagination. Floor tiles with a star pattern give the space a Moorish vibe, an exposed brick alcove shows how the home has retained traditional architecture, but then modern elements such as the charcoal-grey kitchen cabinets bring you back to the 21st-century. Up in the bedroom, a funky, plant-patterned feature wall sits in another stairway alcove, and a bright-red velvet headboard brings a regal edge to proceedings. Pour a glass of champagne, open the sash window and peer out at the awe-inspiring views of the spires of York Minster.

The Jeweller's

This Grade II listed home may be modern by York’s standards (Georgian, in fact) but it’s still got bags of character. The location is tough to beat – on the banks of the Foss River, tucked in amongst the trendy, global restaurants and boutique coffee shops of Walmgate. York’s historic attractions are at your fingertips with the stunning York Minster a seven-minute walk down atmospheric old streets, and the Jorvik Viking Centre a three-minute stroll. Inside, old sash windows let in plenty of natural light and you’ll find a stylish medley of slate grey and duck-egg blue keeping things contemporary. The cosy living room has plenty to entertain you after a day exploring the city (even an X-Box for rainy days) and the open-plan kitchen keeps the place spacious and sociable. Come bedtime, a queen-size bed awaits for a sound sleep.     

On The Foss

Enclosed within the city's medieval walls beside the River Floss and just a five-minute walk from the heart of historic York, locations don't come much better than this. Lose yourself in the labyrinth of streets to discover bustling restaurants, cosy tea rooms, and a myriad of independent boutiques. Be sure to check out Betty's Café Tea Rooms (just eleven minutes on foot over the river) for a fat rascal - it's a thing around these parts. And there's no better way to see the city than to trace along the magnificent circuit of 13th-century walls. When it's time to rest up, you'll find a welcoming retreat awaiting. Housed in an impressive 19th Century warehouse of many former guises – first as one of Europe's largest flour mills, before a stint as chocolate giants, Rowntree and Co's navigation warehouse - the five-storey building has been reimagined into luxury apartments. Inside, the exposed brickwork, industrial windows, and archived imagery dotted about the home tell of its past, while homely touches and a deep sofa to sink into ramp up the cosy factor. And thanks to its privileged setting beside the quiet riverbanks, you can be sure of a peaceful night's sleep here.
