While the city of York might be known for its historic architecture, this modern apartment with its chic design and cosy furnishings will make you feel perfectly at home in the present. It is located just a fifteen-minute walk from the city centre, providing easy access to famous sites like York Minster and York Castle Museum, as well as a range of trendy restaurants, bars, and cafes. While the upstairs bedrooms each provide a sense of privacy and comfort, it is the main floor’s living room, kitchen, and diner that is the highlight. The open-plan living space elegantly combines with an ample rooftop terrace and lounge area, allowing guests to enjoy dinner and drinks alfresco. 

The Rooftop Life

Although this home is right across the street from York Cemetery, there's absolutely nothing eerie about it. In fact, we think it's rather charming, thanks to light-filled living areas, a cosy wood-burning stove and oodles of traditional character. Curl up in the window seats and admire the leafy view, share a meal at the dining table, snooze in the sumptuous bedrooms or sprawl out in the lounge while a movie plays on the smart TV. There's more than enough space to make yourself at home, especially with the pretty garden off the kitchen. On summer evenings, gather outside at the bistro table with a glass of wine, watching the daytime slowly fade as the scent of flowers lingers in the air. With supermarkets, eateries and even a playground all nearby, this home is well-suited to families who want to unwind at home and explore in equal measure. Leash up the pup and enjoy leisurely strolls along the River Ouse and the city walls – just five minutes away on foot. Or pick up the pace and visit York Minster (a twenty-five-minute walk), browse the stalls at Shambles Market (reachable in twenty) and discover the array of dining, shopping and cultural attractions in the city centre (fifteen minutes on foot).

Or sneak back to bed in the boutique-style bedrooms with freshly brewed coffee and open up the Juliet balcony doors. Wherever you choose to be, those bird's eye views of river life and the city's rooftops will be right there. 

And when the medieval city finally comes calling, you won't have far to go. Thanks to its privileged setting nestled within the city's medieval walls, all the must-see sights are walkable. Get off to a flying start at York Castle, just a six-minute saunter over the Foss River.

Rising Up

Sitting on the right-hand side of the River Ouse close to the locally loved Bishopthorpe Road — a street given the nickname 'The Notting Hill of the North' and for good reason — this house brings some contemporary luxury to a highly coveted location.

The open-concept ground floor is sure to draw admiring gasps upon first glance. In this space, you'll find everything from a wood-burning stove and a simply huge modern kitchen to a cosy courtyard accessed through a glass door. Let's just say that whatever the weather, you'll have somewhere effortlessly stylish in which to relax.

The first floor doesn't disappoint, either. The bedrooms are minimalist in their design, particularly in the master which has some chic hand-crafted sliding wardrobes. This room also benefits from a view of York's City Walls out through the window.

These medieval boundaries take eight minutes to reach on foot and many of the city's most famous sights lie just beyond that — York Minster is a twenty-minute walk door-to-door. After a day of exploring the city, you will have worked up a mighty appetite, which deserves to be satiated by the fabulous array of restaurants, cafes and bars that surround the home.



The Grand Old Duchess

Watch life go by along York's medieval city walls from the private balcony that wraps the entire length of this bright, modern apartment. Dining alfresco on sunny evenings, as dusk settles over the historic rooftops in the distance, is a rare treat for a home this centrally located. Inside, expect pristine interiors and all the home comforts you could need. We’re particularly impressed with the master bedroom with views over the city, complete with a king-size bed donned with crisp, snow-white linens. And thanks to its unique position away from traffic noise, you’ll be sure to bank a peaceful night’s sleep here. When it’s time to set off exploring, it’s hard to imagine a better location. You’re just a short walk from the city’s historical hotspots, including York Minister (sixteen minutes on foot) and the vibrant Shambles Market (ten minutes on foot). When thought’s turn to food, lose yourself in the labyrinth of streets wall-to-wall with bustling restaurants and traditional pubs. And no visit to York would be complete without a visit to the institution that is Betty’s Café Tea Rooms (just fourteen minutes on foot) for a fat rascal scone and a side portion of Yorkshire nostalgia.

Wall to Wall

If you’re in York for culture, history, and plenty of pub trips, then this home couldn’t be any more perfectly placed. You’ll be living a two-minute walk from York Minster, and just three from the Theatre Royal, York Art Gallery, and the watering holes of Stonegate. This ancient street, where the house is located, was once the medieval route into the city from the north. But today, it’s your route to luxe living in the city centre. A former jewellery shop, the quaint brick building still has quirky features and a creative soul. As soon as you step inside, the striking decor is sure to capture your imagination. Floor tiles with a star pattern give the space a Moorish vibe, an exposed brick alcove shows how the home has retained traditional architecture, but then modern elements such as the charcoal-grey kitchen cabinets bring you back to the 21st-century. Up in the bedroom, a funky, plant-patterned feature wall sits in another stairway alcove, and a bright-red velvet headboard brings a regal edge to proceedings. This Grade II listed home may be modern by York’s standards (Georgian, in fact) but it’s still got bags of character. The location is tough to beat – on the banks of the Foss River, tucked in amongst the trendy, global restaurants and boutique coffee shops of Walmgate. York’s historic attractions are at your fingertips with the stunning York Minster a seven-minute walk down atmospheric old streets, and the Jorvik Viking Centre a three-minute stroll. Inside, old sash windows let in plenty of natural light and you’ll find a stylish medley of slate grey and duck-egg blue keeping things contemporary. The cosy living room has plenty to entertain you after a day exploring the city (even an X-Box for rainy days) and the open-plan kitchen keeps the place spacious and sociable. Come bedtime, a queen-size bed awaits for a sound sleep.     

On The Foss

From its enchanting vine-covered brick exterior to its sunny front garden space – ideal for morning coffees and sunset glasses of wine – this home is a vision of country chic yet just minutes away from York’s most famous sights.

While you could spend all day tucked inside your beautiful cottage, go out and explore your surroundings. You’re just a five-minute walk from the York City Walls, an eight-minute stroll from York Minster, while the Shambles – one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval shopping streets – is ten minutes away on foot.

Located on a quiet road just a stone's throw from York’s bustling city centre, this stylish apartment is a wonderful choice for a family or friends’ getaway. With a chic interior, suntrap balcony, and well-equipped kitchen, there’s everything you need for a comfortable stay.

We love how sleek and contemporary this home is, and the harmonious colour palette of mustard and dark grey makes it clear a lot of thought went into designing this city pad. It might be chic, but it’s still wonderfully homely. Whether you’re watching the TV on the plush sofa, savouring a coffee on your balcony, tucking into dinner around the dining table, or reading a book in your cosy bed, you’ll feel right at home. 

Not only is the apartment beautiful, but it’s also in a fantastic location. Nestled in a residential area but just a short walk from the city centre, you get the best of both worlds. You’ll love exploring the famous Roman walls, the Georgian architecture, and trying to tick off as many of the thirty museums as possible. If you fancy a break from the city, the Yorkshire Dales are within easy reach for long, windy walks in the countryside. However you spend the day, you’ll be glad to come home to your apartment. Take a bottle of wine to the balcony to catch the last of the afternoon sun, before heading out to discover York’s excellent culinary scene.

Offering all the comforts of home, you'll feel like a local in no time. With everything so new it's practically sparkling, you'll have a sociable, open-plan living space with a comfy sofa and a smart dining table, along with a high-spec contemporary kitchen area with all the kit you'll need to cook at home. Both bedrooms are stylish and each has a dedicated bathroom so there won't be any need to queue for the shower in the morning. Little luxuries include welcome treats, underfloor heating in the bathrooms and a funky remote control backlight behind the TV – to set the mood for the evening. The location couldn't be better either, with a walk of fewer than ten minutes into the city centre.

Month of Sundays

Quiet despite its busy locale, this home will have you in the centre of York, surrounded by pubs and cafes. You’ll be just five minutes on foot from York Minster – striking views of which you’ll have from one of your two balconies – and a five-minute walk from the winding medieval streets that comprise The Shambles. Back at home, you’ll find an open-concept space with a living room, kitchen and dining area – ideal for sociable evenings spent together. If the weather is pleasant, bring aperitifs out onto either of the balconies where you’ll find patio sets and views of the city’s red brick and York Minster. The kitchen is roomy and well-equipped for meals at home, while the bedrooms are plush and the perfect spot to lay your head after a day spent exploring. 

Peppermint Patty

The stereotype linked to those from Yorkshire is that they're a straightforward bunch of people and they aren't afraid to say it how it is. This apartment in the centre of York is similarly no-nonsense and will ensure guests have a hitchless time in this idyllic part of England. The design is simple but effectively so, with the neutral palette of greys and whites livened up by the occasional burst of burnt orange. There's a fireplace to gather around on those chillier evenings, while the mirrored doors on the bedroom wardrobe will make it easy to get ready ahead of an evening out. Located four minutes' walk from the York City Walls, many of the main attractions are equally easy to reach. The cathedral is less than ten minutes away on foot, while the castle takes fifteen.
