To the side of the home, there's a patio area complete with alfresco seating where you can enjoy a coffee and the surrounding tranquillity of West Yorkshire. Later on, climb the 199 steps to the Church of Saint Mary, or visit the ruins of Whitby Abbey to see what inspired Bram Stoker. 

Pick up world-class fish and chips to take back to the townhouse, and enjoy them in front of the fire. If your legs are aching from the steps, you might enjoy a glass of wine in the free-standing bathtub – the perfect way to end the day.

It’s a five-minute jaunt to the sprawling sands of Whitby Beach and you can even take the lift down the cliffs. The neutral-toned decor provides a soothing spot to unwind in the living room where a wood-burning stove keeps things cosy. Herringbone floor runs throughout the ground floor, and the kitchen in sleek dove grey has everything you need for self-catering. Retire to the bedroom with a big bay window and awake naturally to sunlight streaming in.

Packed with antiques collected over the years and grand yet striking rooms, this home in Hemsley is a real find. A red-brick facade and topiaried hedges set the tone as you arrive, and inside you’ll find a collection of hand-carved bureaus and cast iron bathtubs. The living room is a vision of deep red with swathes of velvet curtains and an original fireplace keeping things warm in winter. A smaller, cosy family snug is set around a wood-burning stove so the group can easily spread out. In contrast to the rest of the house, the dine-in kitchen is decidedly modern with concrete-grey walls, plush leather dining chairs and a wall of glass looking out over the garden. Though the blue AGA is a nod to farmhouse tradition. If the weather is fine, dinner can be served outside on the patio at the long dining table. An old cherry tree provides patio shade on sunny days and if you visit in Spring, you might catch the blossom falling like snow. If you don’t fancy cooking in the kitchen or firing up the barbecue, there’s a handful of cosy country pubs in Hemsley town, a two-minute walk away.

Right on the outskirts of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and on the banks of the River Swale, this beautiful home certainly ticks the box for a picturesque setting. From near the house, you’re able to follow walking trails along the river, allowing you to unwind and rejuvenate in the fresh country air. But the home itself also offers plenty of opportunity for peace and quiet.

This charming Tudor castle, built in 1560, has been fully restored to create the perfect romantic retreat for two. Guests can admire the ornate roof beams carved from oak trees felled over 400 years ago in the dining hall, and relax in the cosy living room with a wood-burning stove set within a Tudor fireplace. The bedroom features a double bed on an oak floor adorned with Persian rugs and offers stunning views of the walled garden and the high moors beyond.
