With one of the best views we've seen on this beautiful island, this newly-built home is an understated slice of magic. Set on a green hillside overlooking the glittering sea, it'll be an effort to do anything but sit and stare when you first arrive.

Part of a small cluster of similar homes, this one stands apart from the others so it's perfect if privacy is high on your agenda. Handbuilt by the owner in a traditional style, there are two floors – each with its own kitchen and independent entrance but linked internally by stairs – so it offers some flexibility. And best of all, there's plenty of outside space to enjoy that view from. Walk across to your private pool and comfy sun loungers await on the stone terrace, surrounded by fragrant wild herbs and olive trees, all with staggering views – especially at sunset.

Elsewhere, five comfortable bedrooms – three upstairs and two on the ground floor – make this home big enough for a large group of friends or a couple of families holidaying together. With a shared living room and a choice of dining spots outside, it's easy to spend time all together or to find some privacy.

For the more adventurous, a steep hike leads down to a little private cove, where clear waters and a white pebble beach are yours to enjoy. Not the easiest walk and likely to take you around twenty-five minutes, it's well worth it to dive into those turquoise waters. The owner even runs yoga and wellness retreats where you're encouraged to get closer to nature.

With some of the more popular beaches within a twenty-minute drive, along with the pretty, hillside village of Athani, there's lots to see and do away from the villa too.

On the outside, this charming villa has an old-world appeal, with its red wooden shutters, rust-coloured tegula roof and classic stone façade. But step inside and you'll find bright and open living spaces, sleek bathrooms  (one even has a jacuzzi-style tub) and bedrooms as comfortable as they are stylish. We think it's the perfect family home – and with views like that, it's hard to imagine a more idyllic getaway.

Hop on a glass-bottomed boat from the shores of Agios Nikolaos, fourteen minutes away. Stroll nine minutes to the shores of Madrakia Beach to catch some rays on the sands. Or simply relax in this luxury villa, intertwined with the natural environment.

The architecture manages to delicately balance a striking example of construction, with limited impact on its surroundings. The home itself has been built in the traditional Zakythinian style, with stone walls, wooden ceiling beams and a fireplace in the living room. The galley kitchen has enough space to whip up a Mediterranean banquet, too.

One of the major perks that we should probably mention is that there's direct access to the sea via a stone path and you can borrow kayaks or snorkelling and fishing equipment, as well as binoculars, a telescope and gym equipment. The island's famous Blue Caves can be reached in ten minutes on foot, too.



Homer's Shadow

Dating back to 1878, this home is absolutely brimming with character. Every inch harks back to the past, from exposed stone walls to whitewashed beams on the vaulted ceilings. But don't let that fool you. There are plenty of 21st-century comforts here, too – be it glossy showers or a sleek kitchen filled with all the bits and bobs you'll need to rustle up Grecian feasts.

And don't even get us started on the dazzling views. Pad outside and be greeted by the Ionian Sea sparkling on the horizon and Kefalonia's tree-studded peaks standing proud in the distance. Our favourite spot to admire the scenery? The private pool, where long, lazy afternoons relaxing in the water are a given. You also can't beat the vistas from the balcony or the terrace. Come evening, gather around the table and dine alfresco, the coastal sunset creating the dreamiest backdrop to your meal. 

For a day out and about, Kefalonia's stunning coastline is well worth exploring. Drive 10km to the famous Myrtos Beach and stretch out in the sand, or visit villages like Assos and Fiskardo for a smattering of restaurants and a whole of charm.

Though the decor is a little dated in places, the postcard-perfect views from the en-suite bedrooms are a highlight, as is the outside with its terrace, pool and sun loungers. There’s even a separate children’s pool making it great for family holidays. Outside of the home, hike the nearby trails and take advantage of the mountainous location. Nidri village is a five-minute drive, while the Dimosari Waterfalls (1.8 kilometres) and Nidri Beach (1.3 kilometres) are beauty spots not to be missed.

Located in the Lithakia village of Zakynthos, this Greek villa provides lovely views of the Ionian Ocean in one direction and mountains in the other. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to enjoy in Zante Town, or, of course, you could return home and enjoy a homemade moussaka alfresco with views of the ocean, or even take advantage of the barbecue and grill some delicious souvlaki under the shaded pergola. 

Zen in Zakynthos

This seafront villa, located in northern Zakynthos, is perfect for those looking to unwind while enjoying views of Kefalonia. It was the outside space that caught our attention – we loved the infinity pool with a hydro-massage spot, dining terrace, and of course, the direct access to the beach. Relaxation continues inside, thanks to the steam room. Plus, flexible sleeping arrangements make this place ideal for any group travelling together.
