What better base in the ancient-ruin-filled peninsula of the Peloponnese than a neo-classic villa that radiates Grecian charm. This place was originally built in 1893 and is set in over 35,000 square metres of manicured grounds like a lavish country escape fit for nobility. The Mediterranean gardens are filled with blooming flowers, fragrant jasmine and wisteria, and you can help yourself to the vegetables, strawberries, peaches and apricots ripening in the sun. With a sweeping panorama taking in Agia Kyriaki and Myrtos bays, this villa up in the hills of Agkonas is the perfect island retreat. Days can be spent by the swimming pool, lying on the flat loungers and taking in the views of mountains and sea. On the first floor, a bamboo pergola shades the outdoor dining area and a hanging chair looks out over the sprawling vista. 

Inside, it’s an industrial-style space of poured concrete and iron railings with a couple of vintage pieces keeping things characterful. There’s plenty of prep space on the concrete worktops in the kitchen and washed wood cabinets feel bespoke. In the master bedroom, the honey-hued stone wall on display sings of old Kefalonia, and the second bedroom has a distinctly Moroccan vibe.

When it comes to exploring the area, you’ll find a mini market within walking distance, and there’s a beautiful, unspoilt local beach a ten-minute drive away with a handful of cafés to choose from. 

Ionian Embrace

One of a collection of recently built villas on the outskirts of Zakynthos Town, this is contemporary Greek living at its finest.

With huge windows and glass doors running along the walls, the home is spoilt when it comes to natural light and this plentiful asset is only accentuated more by the cleansingly white walls, floors and ceilings. Save for some Scandi-inspired wood surfaces, most of the furnishings are similarly muted in colour, which makes for an instantly relaxing atmosphere.

When the coastal panorama proves too tempting, you can walk down to Akrotiri Beach in less than a quarter of an hour. The restaurants and museums of Zakynthos Town are only five minutes' drive away, too.

The view from this home in an elevated position just north of Skala is to die for. The glittering sea extends right across your field of vision from the enormous terrace, with a glass safety barrier so absolutely nothing interferes with your view. Out here, which is where we think you'll spend most of your time, you'll be able to relax on the sun loungers, sip drinks on the sofas and eat at the table under the stars. And just when you think this outside space couldn't get any better, there's a beautiful private pool too, with hydrotherapy and swim-against-the-stream settings.

Inside, it's a fully modernised villa that has maintained some of its character features – so expect a glossy new kitchen and fabulous new bathrooms, along with a pretty fireplace in the open-plan living space and vaulted ceilings in the bedrooms. You can enjoy the vistas from inside too – from the living room, the spacious attic bedroom, which is on a mezzanine above the living space and the another bedroom, which also opens out onto the terrace. It's not hard to see how the Greek myths of sea gods and Mount Olympus came into being at this beautiful spot on the Liakas Peninsular. Bordered by the slopes of Mount Ainos and with uninterrupted views out over the ocean towards Zakynthos, this home's gardens are the stuff of legends. The bright green lawns stop directly at the sea, with a kidney-shaped pool for cooling off on hot days and a table-tennis table for afternoon exertion. A white outhouse hides a large built-in barbecue, which must boast some of the best cooking views on the island. Inside, the home is characterised by muted tones and paved floors. A large, open-plan living space is flooded with light from the sliding doors, with an L-shaped sofa for movie nights. Bedrooms bounce from orange and fuchsia to pastel blue, and each has their own en suite for a sense of privacy. Wake up early and head out to the top balcony or the wicker patio furniture to begin your day with the most incredible golden sunrise.

With sweeping views across Asos and beyond, this home delivers the ideal setting for a refreshing coastal escape. And while you could spend your days lounging by the pool, this is a great base from which to explore the nearby beaches, coves and picturesque harbour. Guests should note there are lots of steps here, so it may not be suitable for those with reduced mobility, but you will find a lovely terrace and your host can help organise a range of extra services – including excursions and local tours. 

A Beauty's Paradise

On the outside, this charming villa has an old-world appeal, with its red wooden shutters, rust-coloured tegula roof and classic stone façade. But step inside and you'll find bright and open living spaces, sleek bathrooms  (one even has a jacuzzi-style tub) and bedrooms as comfortable as they are stylish. We think it's the perfect family home – and with views like that, it's hard to imagine a more idyllic getaway.

Days here are endlessly dreamy. Wake up to the sight of the Sivota Bay in the distance, then pad out onto the balcony to savour an espresso in the morning air. Afternoons are best spent lounging on the daybed (an excellent spot for a catnap in the sun), splashing in the glimmering pool and swinging in the hammock underneath the shady trees. Follow the path down to the sea when you fancy a dip in the ocean, or stroll through the lush gardens, picking fresh vegetables, ripened fruit and aromatic herbs to use for the night's dinner. And speaking of meals, there's no better place to tuck into a feast than the outdoor table, sharing a bottle of wine as the evening slowly fades.

It's only a five-minute drive into town, where local tavernas and coffee shops sit along the bay. Many beautiful sandy beaches are also within easy reach, including Afteli (a fifteen-minute drive), Ammoussa (reachable in twenty minutes) and Paralia Mikros Gialos (twenty-two minutes by car), so there’ll never be a dull day in paradise.

Crown of Seaweed

Dating back to 1878, this home is absolutely brimming with character. Every inch harks back to the past, from exposed stone walls to whitewashed beams on the vaulted ceilings. But don't let that fool you. There are plenty of 21st-century comforts here, too – be it glossy showers or a sleek kitchen filled with all the bits and bobs you'll need to rustle up Grecian feasts.

And don't even get us started on the dazzling views. Pad outside and be greeted by the Ionian Sea sparkling on the horizon and Kefalonia's tree-studded peaks standing proud in the distance. Our favourite spot to admire the scenery? The private pool, where long, lazy afternoons relaxing in the water are a given. You also can't beat the vistas from the balcony or the terrace. Come evening, gather around the table and dine alfresco, the coastal sunset creating the dreamiest backdrop to your meal. 

For a day out and about, Kefalonia's stunning coastline is well worth exploring. Drive 10km to the famous Myrtos Beach and stretch out in the sand, or visit villages like Assos and Fiskardo for a smattering of restaurants and a whole of charm.

Eternal Are the Days

This delightful apartment can be found just ten metres from the sea in the pretty village of Karavomylos. It’s one of a series of quiet, peaceful apartments, perfect for those longing for a restful visit to Greece – this isn’t party central.

You’ll likely spend your days at the beach, swimming in the clear water and soaking up the sunshine. It’s a two-minute walk from the apartment so you can sleep in and still nab a sun lounger at the shore. Stroll along the seafront and choose a taverna to pop into for lunch – as you’re on an island you really ought to sample some of the fresh seafood. 

The crown jewel of this village is Melissani Cave, a natural wonder just five minutes from the apartment. Boats take you into the cave, which has a hidden lake and forest inside – it makes for a romantic outing. 

The town of Assos is thirty-two minutes away, and it’s well worth the car journey. Wandering around the cobbled streets and admiring the colourful houses is a delightful way to spend a day, especially with an ice cream in hand. 

Returning to the apartment after busy days in the sun feels like returning home. Open a bottle of wine to sip together in the garden as the sun sinks in the sky. 


Wicker & Wood

You'll need to pinch yourself when waking up in this Grecian paradise. Nestled among the hills and olive groves of Kefalonia, this characterful home offers privacy and seclusion. Gazing out from your private terrace, the glistening expanse of the Ionian sea beckons. Arrive at the nearest beach after a scenic fifteen-minute drive – if you can resist stopping at the inviting tavernas you'll pass on the way.

This leads to a mezzanine desk area, ideal for those who can't quite switch off as you'll at least be able to separate work from play. The bedrooms are as blissful as you'd expect, two of which open onto balconies with spectacular sea views. We can't think of a better spot to watch the lights fade and stars emerge.

By choosing this abode, you're perfectly placed to explore the best of the island. Assos, a picturesque paintbox village, is within easy reach. Spend the day and visit the crumbling Venetian castle, built in the 16th century to protect against pirates. Even closer to home, you'll find the tiny Fiscardo. This quaint fishing community is a worthy pit-stop if you're in the mood for fresh seafood or a boat trip around the island.
