What’s more, there is a regular ferry connection between Athens and Kea which takes about an hour, taking you to the Lavrion port. From here, you can drive about fifty-six minutes to Greece’s capital and explore everything Athens has to offer.

Located atop a rocky bar of Koundouros, this home is made up of independent lower and upper levels, each with their own kitchen and living areas. Things might be a bit of a squeeze at full capacity, so you'll want to pack light. A ten-minute walk will bring you to the nearest sandy beaches of Koundouros, and you'll find beach bars, tavernas and water sports.

A private path leads from the terrace of this Kea villa to flat rocks on the shore of the Aegean Sea – a perfect swim spot when the weather is calm. Just 100 metres along the coast, you’ll find a horseshoe of secluded sandy beach. Or, you can opt to swim in the saline infinity pool and simply admire the sea from on high instead. Sunsets from the dining table on the terrace are particularly spectacular and the summer kitchen can provide rustic feasts. The open kitchen, living and dining room inside feels very much lived-in with trinkets and curios covering most surfaces – but the bonus is the kitchen comes with all the odd utensils and spices you might need.

It's fair to say that each of the Greek islands has a distinct identity and Spetses appeals to those fond of the finer things in life, with plenty of high-end restaurants and boutiques dotted across the map. You'll also find some rather impressive villas, such as this majestic home.

Spread across three floors, the star of the show has to be the swimming pool surrounded by a terrace with loungers on which to dry off after a dip. Up on the top floor, you'll find another terrace with pleasingly green views, but if you need a break from the sun, there's a verandah with a dining table and a hammock practically begging for a post-lunch snooze.

The interior feels typically Greek with whitewashed walls, shuttered windows and a few boho touches in the furnishings and decorations. The glass doors on the ground floor bring in plenty of natural light, as well as a burst of fresh air when swung open. We've also got kind words for the contemporarily styled kitchen in a dashing shade of grey, too.

When it comes to seeing a little more is the island, there are small beaches within three hundred metres of the home, while the larger Kaiki beach takes about ten minutes to reach on foot. The port town of Spetses is a similar amount of time in the opposite direction and offers a great choice of restaurants and a pair of museums to explore.

It’s up in the hills, just outside of Kea’s capital town Ioulis so you can reach the supermarket and charming restaurants in less than ten minutes on foot. Up here, you’ve got a great view, taking in the rolling hills of Kea, topped with ancient white chapels, all the way to the sea. The group can spread out across two villas, each with its own kitchen, breezy living room and dining areas and come together in the outside space.

A rectangle of turquoise swimming pool provides an inviting spot to cool off in the heat of the day. Alfresco dining comes courtesy of deck-chair style seating around a wooden table, shaded by a pergola. Loungers on the beautiful stone patio look out over hilltops to the sparkling sea, and views don’t get much better than from the covered rooftop terrace. Inside certainly doesn't possess the same wow factor – in fairness, it's hard to beat those postcard-worthy panoramas – but we think the fuss-free space will do the job for a family or a small group of friends seeking a relaxing retreat. Moreover, private parking makes exploring Kea a breeze – if you can pull yourself away from the views, that is.

Indeed, you'll never tire of the views of the Ionian Sea enjoyed from the home's outdoor space, which also features a swimming pool and lots of space for alfresco dinners. The living quarters quite sensibly don't try to compete with these wonderful surroundings and are simple in style. The fact that there are two separate guest houses on the site might be handy for separate families or large friendship groups paying a visit, as well.
