For everyday amenities such as supermarkets, it's a short drive to the village of Fragokastello – we'd recommend having a car here.

This home's proximity to the beach (just 250 metres away) makes it a stand-out. Private access is via pretty steep steps, and it’s shared with the villa next door, but you can't beat having the sea that close. The nearest taverna, bar and mini-market are a little further, so you'll need to hire a car or get a cab. But the views back home are stunning, and there's a pool to cool off from the sun. You can enjoy vistas from inside as one of the bedrooms opens onto the terrace. One of the more unusual design features is that the kitchen is open to the elements, but as Crete is known for its fantastic weather, that's not a problem.

Not only does this hilltop villa close to the northern coastline of Crete gaze out over the deep azure Cretan sea, but you can also spot the city of Rethymno and its medieval citadel while standing in the garden.

This glorious backdrop makes it a pleasure to pass hours in the home's two acres of verdant grounds, whether that's paddling in the swimming pool with an adjoining children's section, playing a little ping-pong on the terrace or enjoying dinner fresh off the barbecue on the alfresco table. It probably won't be a surprise to learn that this beautiful outdoor space can be used for weddings or events.

When you eventually head inside, you'll be pleased to discover a thoroughly contemporary interior filled with natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors, plus chandeliers and a fireplace to light up once the sun goes down for the night. After looking out to Rethymno for so long, you'll probably want to pay the city a visit. Thankfully, it's only 2km away and has a wealth of historic architecture, museums and restaurants that warrant multiple trips. It's also fair to say that this corner of Crete isn't short of sandy beaches, either.

This beautiful, traditional stone house on the edge of Prines, set on a gentle, west-facing slope, has wonderful mountain and sea views. Relax in the Crete sun by the private pool – we love the beautifully maintained garden with its vibrant flowers and verdant hedges. Later in the day, watch the rich sun set over the sea from the large balcony with a glass of wine. 

Inside, exposed stone, beams and arches create an atmospheric space, especially at night, and several sofas accommodate your family or friends for a good chat before dinner.

Situated in a cul-de-sac, it’s a leisurely stroll to the village centre, where there is a mini market and a choice of tavernas and cafe bars if you prefer to eat out. Or head to Rethymno, with its old Venetian harbour, 6 kilometres away. For a day at the sea, the nearest beach is 3 kilometres from this lovely villa.

This beautiful villa in Frangokástello couldn’t get much closer to the ocean if it tried. Nestled happily on the coastline of southern Crete, it boasts stunning picture-postcard vistas from practically every vantage point and with the Libyan sea so close, from the moment you arrive you can feel calmness and complete tranquillity wash over you. 

Inside, the home is clean and contemporary. The bathrooms are akin to what you’d find in a spa, with the en-suite to the main bedroom situated in the room itself. We love the modern kitchen, complete with a waterfall island for a little touch of luxury. This is just the spot for loved ones to gather with a glass of wine, while the nominated cook for the evening shows off their culinary skills in the kitchen.

Step onto the terrace and your eyes can’t help but be drawn to the view – it’s mesmerising. In the mornings, picture yourself with a warming cup of coffee, settled on the sun lounger as the Greek rays warm your skin, just listening to the gentle roll of the waves. Where do we start with this villa just outside Agios Pavlos? There's so much to love. Firstly it's under 250 metres from the beach – that caught our eye straight away. And then there are those immaculate views over the shimmering sea that are enough to make anyone swoon with holiday envy. The vistas over the water are absolutely stunning from sunrise to sunset, best enjoyed over long alfresco meze lunches before cooling off in the private pool or simply relaxing on the daybeds as you work on your tan.
