Nowhere is that more true than out in the rooftop garden, which has a heated swimming pool – albeit a smallish one – plus lots of seating and a barbecue should you feel in the mood for alfresco dining. The nearest taverna, bar and mini-market are a little further, so you'll need to hire a car or get a cab. But the views back home are stunning, and there's a pool to cool off from the sun. You can enjoy vistas from inside as one of the bedrooms opens onto the terrace. One of the more unusual design features is that the kitchen is open to the elements, but as Crete is known for its fantastic weather, that's not a problem.

The closest beach is a breezy 350-metre walk away, so you can merrily spend your days on the soft white sand and paddling in the sea. Lively Platanias, with its wealth of bars, restaurants and cafes, is a five-minute drive, and you can easily hop in a cab if you’ve not got a car. 

The villa itself is a delight to behold. Traditional stone accents and exposed wooden beams complement the terracotta tiles, which keep the home nice and cool even in the middle of summer. You’ll wake up each morning to the sun streaming through the windows, tempting you outside to make the most of the warm weather.
