Located centrally in Mesaria, this white-washed and minimal home is ideal for a relaxing stay in Santorini away from the tourist hot spots. The communal space inside the apartment is pretty limited, and there isn’t a full kitchen – while the home can sleep up to four guests, we think this is best suited to a couple looking to explore the island. The private outdoor dining area is perfect for socialising and enjoying a couple of sundowners, while the terrace and heated plunge pool make for the ultimate sun-worshipping location.

Although it’s not the largest or most impressive of our Santorini homes, this apartment has a fresh and modern feel and would suit a couple perfectly for a long weekend getaway. When we think of Fira in Santorini – we imagine views of the inky blue caldera, and this studio apartment doesn't disappoint. You can enjoy them from the private terrace and heated hot tub. Another highlight here is the Greek breakfast with locally sourced ingredients which can be savoured in the room, terrace or the host's secluded courtyard (handy as there isn't a kitchen here). Inside, the suite is decorated in a simple, traditional style, reflecting the island. The location is fabulous too – it's 100 metres from the Megaro Gyzi Museum and 150 metres from the cable car which takes you to the old port. Formerly a bakery, this handsome stone building is now home to a villa that provides a slightly offbeat place to stay in Santorini. Inside, there are two separate apartments — one on each storey — that both feel typically Mediterranean in spirit, particularly the white walls, flowing fabrics and wooden furnishings.

While the outdoor space isn't the largest, the host can't be accused of not wringing every last drop of potential from it. There's not just one, but two Jacuzzis out here, as well as no shortage of loungers and seating on which to soak up the sunshine. Throw in the barbecue and an alfresco dining area, and what more could you need?

The surrounding town of Emporio is a charming mix of medieval alleys, whitewashed architecture and historic attractions, like the fifteenth-century Venetian Castle. If you fancy a day at the seaside, however, your nearest beach is just 3km away.

Such is the beautiful landscape in abundance and the hilly terrain from which to appreciate it, it seems a waste to go to the Greek islands and not stay somewhere with a decent view. This villa on the highest point of Santorini's capital is, therefore, an excellent choice. From the terrace, guests are treated to a panoramic vista of the Aegean Sea and the Tholos Naftilos volcano sat in the middle.

As you would hope, there are plenty of places where you can sit and gawp at this pretty scene, including alfresco dining tables, lounges and a hot tub with an uninterrupted view of the caldera. 

Although your attention might naturally be drawn elsewhere, the home itself is a treat for the eyes, too. Although it has recently been reconstructed, it has been built in the neoclassical style popular with affluent residents that made the island their residence in the nineteenth century. As a result, you'll see domed ceilings, arched doorways and thick walls, as well as an eclectic collection of artwork and decorative items.

The prime location in the middle of Fira means that there are plenty of restaurants and cultural distractions within walking distance, including the Megaro Gizi Museum. The town's old harbour isn't too far away either.

From the moment we saw the views from this villa in the village of Firostefani, we were sold. Endless stretches of blue radiate from all sides, best enjoyed from the terrace and hot tub. There’s an alfresco dining spot too that’s just waiting to be used for Greek treats in the sun, and when the rays get too strong, you can retreat inside amid the villa’s cool whitewashed walls. There are a few signs of wear and tear in the decor and the kitchen is on the small side. But with Fira just a ten-minute walk away, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample the local fare. And when you’re ready for a dip in the sea, pebbly Gialos Beach is 3.5 kilometres from your door.

Overlooking the sparkling Aegean Sea, this home enjoys an enviable location in the heart of Santorini. It should come as no surprise that the outside space is the standout here, boasting a private swimming pool and plenty of seating for sitting back and soaking up the view. That being said, the interior is nothing to scoff at either, offering plenty of privacy thanks to its unique, split-level design. Whether you’re travelling with a handful of friends or the whole family, you won’t be short on living space here. 

Small and scenic, Santorini is easy to get around without the help of a car, though we wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to hire one to explore the island at your own pace. Drive to the nearest beach and settle in for an afternoon of sunbathing, embark on a hike across Nea Kamen volcano, or head into Pyrgos Kallistis and practise your Greek with the friendly locals.

You're also within easy walking distance of Vourvoulos Beach (450m away) for easygoing days along the coast.

This unique villa on the Greek island of Santorini is located in Firostefani village known as the most beautiful secret of Santorini’s Caldera. Despite its quiet and private setting, the home is only a two-minute walk from Firostefani Central Square, which offers a variety of restaurants and cafes perfect for traditional Greek meals, as well as a great view of the caldera cliff-side while you eat. 

Slightly further away from the villa (but still within easy walking distance), you can reach Fira Town where you can visit The Museum of Prehistoric Thira, displaying artefacts from the destroyed Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri, ride the Santorini cable car down to Skala for some truly amazing views, or see the Three Bells of Fira with its iconic, blue-domed church. 

Spend relaxing hours back at the villa, lounging in the Mediterranean sunshine before plunging into the cool water of your private infinity pool. As you swim to the water’s edge and overlook the Aegean Sea, you will also be provided with a panoramic view of the island’s volcano. As the sun sets, we would love nothing more than to be sitting on the terrace beside the pool, sipping wine from the welcome hamper, and watching the colours of the sky reflected in the ocean, as the sun sinks behind the volcano, and disappears below the horizon.

Situated underneath the Venetian-era Pyrgos Castle in Santorini, it's hard to imagine this beautiful setting being the site of a factory, but rather remarkably, this home has an industrial history. In a former life, the building was used solely for the production of wine and tsipouro.

It has since been refurbished to become a set of four self-contained homes that can be booked out all at once. There are still signs of its history, from the cave-like rooms and the massive piece of machinery that sits in the middle of one of the living rooms. 

However, there are plenty of luxurious touches that have since been added, like the swimming pool and Jacuzzi that sit in the middle of the outdoor space, as well as the dreamy rooftop terrace that looks out over the Aegean Sea and neighbouring islands.

The historic village of Pyrgos has medieval streets and alleys to peek around, as well as a handful of restaurants and the aforementioned castle. There's also an abundance of wineries in the local area if you feel inspired by the villa, as well as Kamari Beach, which can easily be reached with a car.

When winding up the path to this home, you'll be struck by its traditional beauty. Reminiscent of ancient Greece, the original lime kiln was built by the owner's family over two hundred years ago. Given the rustic look of this stunning villa, you wouldn't expect to see Smeg appliances, Smart TVs, and Simmons mattresses. The blend of the old meets the new is perfectly done. It's chic and comfortable while retaining that quintessentially Santorini charm.

Swing in the hammock, glide through the infinity pool, and lounge as you watch the sun dance on the Aegean Sea. The sea becomes increasingly tempting, you'll probably want to make your way to the lovely Monolithos Beach, a thirteen-minute drive away. Santorini isn't known for its beaches, but you can count on Monolithos for its soft sand, inviting waters, and plenty of sun loungers.

When you get back salty and freckly, you'll fall in love with the home's lime kiln walls all over again. Enjoy a nice, refreshing drink on the outdoor sofas as you watch the sun dip into the Aegean's inky waters, leaving the sky in pink and orange hues in its wake. When it comes to dinnertime, Santorini isn't short of restaurants. The closest being around seven minutes away by foot – enjoy all of the souvlaki, moussaka, and dolmades that your stomach can muster.

While parking is possible at the entrance of the village, a car isn’t essential as the area is best explored on foot, with Katharos Beach just a 19-minute walk away.

From the tiered terrace, where you'll find ample seating and the private pool,  picture-perfect views of the rolling landscape and deep-blue Aegean Sea unfold, thanks to the house's hillside position. From here, you can reach the tavernas of picturesque Pyrgos in moments. The beach lies a little further away, but with a car rental at your disposal, it'll take minutes to get there. Throw in daily breakfast, housekeeping, and a guesthouse where four guests can seek a little more privacy, and it's a pretty sweet deal.

It’s a short walk from the centre of Pyrgos, a charming hilltop town where you’ll find a handful of traditional tavernas, churches and some of the island’s famous wineries. The beautiful, quiet town of Megalochori is just a four-minute drive away and the island’s capital of Fira is an eight-minute drive. 

From the sprawling terrace, you’ve got a front-row seat to the glorious Santorini sunsets over the caldera. At the golden hour, the earth-toned walls of this home practically glow and the swimming pool shimmers silver and gold. During the day you can soak up the rays on a beanbag lounger and double day bed, or gather around the outdoor dining table for a feast outside. We love the sunken seating area, hewn into the terrace and illuminated at night.

Nestled in the desirable village of Imerovigli, also known as the balcony of the Aegean, you'll find this beautiful cave home. It's split into two sections connected by an outdoor staircase, meaning that your whole group can enjoy plenty of peace and independence.

The gorgeous natural textures and white interior create a soothing ambiance where you can really kick back and relax. There is space to eat inside, but we think you'd probably rather dine outside under the shady pergola, as you breathe in the fresh sea air. Admire the stunning views from the comfort of your lounger, before plunging into the swimming pool to cool off. And, as the sun goes down, you can gather your guests in the outdoor hot tub to sip local wine under the stars – it doesn't get much better than this. 

Imerovigli is quieter than some other areas of the island, and you can stroll through the picturesque streets admiring the architecture. Stop off at a local taverna for lunch, before following the walking trail up to the breathtaking viewpoint at Skaros Rock. And, with the town of Fira just over 2km away, you can easily visit the capital's cathedrals, museums, and even take a ride on the cable car.
