In Nea Skioni, Halkidiki, this villa is just 50 metres from the nearest sandy beach. It’s a short walk into the coastal town, where you’ll find seafood restaurants and family-run tavernas galore. Days can be spent by the poolside, or indulging in long, lazy lunches on the terrace outdoors with the sea shimmering in the distance. Although it’s one of four similar maisonettes within a holiday complex, the traditional Greek touches inside – a stone fireplace and beachy bric-a-brac on the open-plan living area – save it from feeling generic.

Perched on a hilltop within walking distance of Agios Prokopios Beach and a short car ride from Naxos, this room offers a restful stay for a couple or solo traveller. There’s no kitchen here, so you’ll need to head out at mealtimes. Fortunately, there are plenty of tavernas within driving distance of your doorstep. Our favourite feature was the terrace – we couldn’t get enough of the private pool, especially after a nap on the loungers.

While the minimalist design might not be for everyone, the location is ideal for those who don't want to be in the centre of the city. The outdoor seating is perfect for enjoying a glass of wine at sunset and offers unobstructed views of the Aegean sea. You'll want a car for heading into central Athens, but it's an easy walk to restaurants, cafes, and the sandy Yabanaki beach.

From the lagoon-style pool, you’ve got a beautiful view of the Gulf of Molos and Molos Beach is just a five-minute walk away. Modern, bright and utterly romantic, this villa is the definition of a couple's retreat. We love how seamlessly you can transition between the indoor living area and the outdoor patio. Spend your days relaxing by the infinity pool, drinking wine under the pergola and soaking up the views of the mountains, sea and olive groves. Then retreat inside when you need a break from the sunshine, where you can rustle up a meal for two in the glossy (albeit compact) kitchen, unwind with a soak in the bathtub or get cosy in the sumptuous bed.

Location-wise, this getaway is nestled in the rural hillside, only a few miles from the coast. Trachilos, Viglia and Paralia Mavros Μolos beaches are just a short drive away, so grab a towel and sprawl out on the sand. Enjoy a date night at one of the beachfront eateries in Kissamos, or for a livelier pace, make the twenty-minute drive to the regional capital of Chania. Between the hiking trails, watersports and historical landmarks all close by, whatever you get up to, you'll be perfectly located for exploring Crete.

If you’re on the lookout for chic design, epic sea views and a beach on your doorstep, this is it. Perched on Evia’s seafront, this eye-popping seven-bedroom villa delivers on style. An infinity pool of dreams glimmers ahead of the stunning, architect-built home. Sink into an outdoor sofa with a glass of wine and watch the sea sparkle. Bliss. Or potter down to the peaceful beach where loungers are waiting. 

Inside, expect some ultra-cool styling. Bold prints on the wall and wood floors keep things homely and welcoming. Bedrooms are roomy and come with en-suites and ocean views. Whip up a feast in one of two kitchens, or fire up the barbecue.

Spend days swimming in the sea or lounging poolside. If you can drag yourself away, Anthidona is your nearest village, 2km away. Or head a little further to Eretria (25kn) for a dose of history. 

Beach House

One of the more modest villas in our collection, this home's excellent location meant that we felt compelled to include it. As you look out at the sparkling Aegean Sea while tending to the barbecue on the terrace or make the sixty-second stroll down to Farangas Beach, you might be inclined to think we made the right choice.

That's not to say the home itself is a compromise in any way. The architecture is traditionally Cycladic in influence, with arched doorways, exposed stonework and wooden ceiling beams. Some of the furnishings are in keeping with this aesthetic, like the weathered coffee table and mirror frame, but there are others, such as the mid-century-inspired chairs in the living room, that add a little more contemporary flair.

As well as the beach almost literally on your doorstep, there are restaurants and a few more seaside spots in the next village over of Aliki, around five minutes' drive away. The island's main town of Parikia takes just under twenty minutes to reach in the car, too.

Location just five-minute walking distance from Mando Square, watch the world go by from another spot, this time with some local Greek cuisine served up for you at a local bar or restaurant. Venture further afield to the Old Port, which is still only a seven-minute drive away, and you'll have even more of Mykonos' history, culture and culinary delights at your finger tips.

Appearing like a wedding cake out of the verdant hills of Astypalaia, this palatial whitewashed structure has been converted into three design-led villas, and here is one of them. The interiors are enviably chic: smooth concrete floors, exposed stonework walls, and a grey-blue colour palette create the architectural ambiance, while statement lampshades, an indoor bamboo plant in the high-spec kitchen, and artful wall hangings provide idiosyncratic charm. The main bathroom is designed by the influential French architect Philippe Starke, and its sultry stonework wall gives it a grotto-like feel. 

There are balconies on the lower and upper levels, complete with a long banquette for lounging on and a table for alfresco meals. Come evening, whip up cocktails and hop into the jacuzzi as you admire the sun setting over the Aegean Sea. 

Astypalaia is the butterfly-shaped island in the Dodecanese that is rich in history and immaculately preserved. It hasn’t been tainted by the tourist trail, so you’ll find pristine beaches, wild hiking trails, and picture-perfect whitewashed houses. The house is 200 metres from the town of Astypalaia, and the crystalline waters of Livadi Beach are less than 2 kilometres away. Your host provides all sorts of bonus perks, like free transfer to and from the airport or port, welcome and farewell treats, and daily breakfast service.

Built from traditional stone, this kind of building is called ‘Peristerionas’ by the locals, a Greek word for the doves or pigeons who would have nested in the dovecote-style walls. Nest yourself in this home for a comfortable and cosy holiday surrounded by Cycladic nature, and catch the soft aromas of wild thyme, oregano and salty ocean air drifting to you in the breeze. Spend quiet days lounging by the pool with a good book before you take a dip in the cool waters of the pool or even unwind in the soothing bubbles of the jacuzzi. 

Take full advantage of the three private verandas this home offers and breakfast, lunch and dinner with an amazing view of the ocean. Spend days beside the sea, treading the soft sands, which can be reached within ten to fifteen minutes by car. Or venture further out to Andros Port twenty-five kilometres away, from which you can admire the amazing Tourlitis Lighthouse. 

In the evening, we would highly recommend dining in one of the tavernas in Korthi Bay, just nine kilometres away, to experience the delicious local and traditional cuisine on offer. Pamper yourself with the organic toiletries before settling in for a great night's sleep on the mattress which is designed to support seven zones of your body, and wake up refreshed the next morning for another blissful day of relaxation.

The Dove & the Olive Branch

When it comes to Greek villas, it doesn't get more classic than this blue and white dream on the unspoiled island of Kalymnos. Steps from the Aegean Sea and equipped with a tranquil swimming pool, the four-bedroom villa offers unbeatable peace and beauty.

Start each morning with a revitalising dip,  overlooked only by low craggy hills and blossoming bougainvillaea flowers. Breakfast will taste all the more delicious with the sea view before you – serve it up on the shaded terrace and tune in to waves lapping beneath the chorus of cicadas. Inside the villa, traditional Greek decor has been embraced, with marine motifs and exposed stone accents keeping the space down-to-earth. Bright and air-conditioned, the living area is the perfect place for a sun break before heading out to explore.

Andros’ location in the north of the Cyclades islands is perfectly suited for action-packed, island-hopping holidays, as well as beachside bliss. With mountains and valleys, it’s also wonderful for hiking, or can equally offer you a bustling afternoon in its capital – Andros Town.

Set in grounds that were once teeming with agricultural workers, this traditional ‘konaki’ home used to play host to tired farmhands. But that old-time hospitality certainly hasn’t gone away. In fact, it’s simply been brought up to date. For a modern-day version, you've got a secluded courtyard with a swimming pool and hot tub, built from local rock. You might not have been tilling the fields, but you still deserve some relaxation. 

Inside its stone walls, traditional interiors make for a cosy, country escape. Rich, timber beams line the ceilings, and rustic wooden furniture sits majestically in the living space. Other quintessentially Greek features include woven decorations and a chunky stone shower – and of course views out to the striking blue sea, which you can admire from the comfort of your private verandah.

You’ll find this laidback retreat, with its coastal-inspired colour scheme and grounding natural textures, just ten metres from Agia Paraskevi Beach. Waking up here is a pleasure, especially when an Ionian breeze drifts through the open windows. Unfussy in style, it’s perfect for a family or two couples seeking a Greek island escape – just bear in mind that the bedroom on the first floor is semi-open to the space below, and the en-suite shower is open to the bedroom, so privacy is limited. For days not spent poolside, the pebble beach of Agios Isidoros is a mere five-minute drive away.

Perched right in front of the sea and offering views of Messinian Bay, this apartment delivers on location. Exploring Kalamata on foot is easy, with local taverns, restaurants, and bars within easy reach. The beach and port are also just across the street. Back home, you can rest your feet in the modern living space. Although the lofted main bedroom is comfortable and contemporary, it isn't the most private since it overlooks the lounge. Guests five and six will also be sleeping on a sofa bed, so we think it's best for shorter trips. Overall, the home lacks some creature comforts – including a washing machine and proper air conditioning – but it's a convenient place to unwind between adventures.
