But as it's probably the leading reason visitors flock to this corner of the Dalmatian coast, we'll start with the view. Set high above the Old Town, in the most sought-after part of Dubrovnik, it looks out over that postcard-perfect vista – just as it has for centuries. If its old stone walls could talk, it could tell us tales of this dramatic city, reaching back to the Renaissance. 

Today, the interior has been respectfully brought up to 21st Century expectations, with smart, neutral decor and a mix of contemporary and classical furnishings giving it a stylish, sophisticated look. Bright and comfortable, the living and dining space is a sociable room with incredible views. There's a fully equipped kitchen if you're cooking at home and a wine cellar in the basement, or you can cook in the traditional summer method – outside on the barbecue.

You’ll reach the freshwater pool first, which sits looking over the Adriatic. You’ll then pass through the gardens and terrace to reach the villa, which is spread over three floors – there’s no shortage of space here. It's around a fifteen-minute walk to the shambling alleyways and historic sights of the famous Old Town, while also being a short stroll from the nearest pebble beach – Betina Cave Beach. But there’s plenty to keep you entertained at the villa itself.

Tiered terraces hang on the hillside, affording fabulous views of Lokrum island, floating out in the crystal Adriatic Sea. Out here, you’ve got a private pool to cool off and, one level up, a sunken Jacuzzi tub for a soothing soak. Dining in the shade of a parasol is a delight with that view to keep the group talking. 

We love the interior, where the light fitting above the dining table looks like an installation in a modern art gallery, and the armchairs could feature in a mid-century museum. Vibrant pictures adorn the walls throughout and the paint-splattered walls of the second living room feel like a work of art in itself. Painting isn’t the only pursuit celebrated in this home – the chrome kitchen could be the canvas for a professional chef and there’s a piano for the maestro of the group in the turret lounge. Bedrooms are sanctuaries, some with access to private balconies, but our favourite has to be the room at the top of the house with its selection of literature for a quiet read.

Located in Trsteno, one of Dubrovnik's extended suburbs, Elafit has a lot going for it. The location is perfect for all those who want to explore the famous UNESCO heritage sites and escape to their calm villa when they're done with the city crowds. This home has a lovely view of the nearby archipelago of islands, which you can visit by taking a ferry from Dubrovnik (or make friends with the local fishermen). The pool is refreshing, the indoors are cosy and you'll have lots of hangouts to try out and simply enjoy the distant sounds of the sea. You might even recognise the nearby Trsteno Arboretum as a prominent filming location from Game of Thrones, and the local beach is only a couple of miles away.

Elafit

From the terrace of this beautiful old villa, you can see Lokrum Island floating off the coast of Dubrovnik in the Adriatic Sea. You’re right on the seafront here with nothing between you and the cliffs down to a secret sandy cove (Betina Cave Beach) but a private road. On top of this, it’s just a short drive or leisurely fifteen-minute stroll to the walls of Dubrovnik’s famous Old Town where narrow alleys are home to bars, restaurants and cafes galore.

Though you’d be forgiven for spending all your time at the villa itself. The terrace is home to an inviting swimming pool and a sunken, overflow Jacuzzi where you can soak with a cold drink in hand, looking out over the Adriatic Sea. Dine outdoors on the patio covered by a rustic wooden ceiling and lit by candelabra. Each terracotta-floored terrace is bursting with flowers in pots and the stone walls are draped with botanica making each balcony and outdoor lounge feel like an ancient Venetian’s holiday home.

The highlight inside has to be the conservatory-style lounge and dining room with a wall of glass windows looking out to the sea. In here, stone columns add a sense of grandeur. Across the entire home, you’ll find myriad lounges for the group to spread out, each just as lavish as the last. Bedrooms are luxurious as hotel suites with big beds and Jacuzzi tubs in the ensuites.

If you want to soak up the history of Dubrovnik, this sixteenth-century townhouse, overlooking terracotta-roofed houses and cobbled streets, could be just what you’re looking for. Located at the heart of Dubrovnik Old Town, you’ll have all the top historical attractions on your doorstep and you’re just a short stroll from Stradun Street for shops, bars, and restaurants. The home’s traditional decor might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the exposed beams, dark wooden furniture, and stone walls certainly suit the historic location. While the house sleeps six, the twin room is very small so is best suited to children or a single guest.

The Silver Wind 

In the heart of Dubrovnik, this modern apartment is within walking distance from all the action. Just a fifteen-minute stroll from Dubrovnik Old Town and five from Bellevue Beach, it’s a great base to come home to after discovering the many shops, restaurants and landmarks the city has to offer. One of our favourite parts is the terrace with its wonderful sea views, while a separate balcony is also shared between two bedrooms. Desks in each bedroom make working from home easy – and you can pay to use the spa, pool and fitness facilities at a nearby hotel. No wonder it caught our eye.

There are plenty of comfy sun loungers dotted around, with space to sunbathe in quiet corners or as a group. If you fancy a day at the beach, you needn’t travel far. You can walk directly from the villa to Šiba beach, which is four minutes away. Mlini beach is an eight-minute drive, so you’ve plenty of choice. Dubrovnik, the pearl of the Adriatic, is a twenty-one-minute drive away and is ideal for a day trip. Stroll along the narrow streets and take in the charm and history, and dine in top-notch restaurants. Make sure you’re back at the villa in time to watch the sun dip in the sky over the sea – the sunsets here are magical.
