Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.

This Italian villa grabbed our attention for its front-row location on the Amalfi coast. You can enjoy spectacular sea views from the garden, balconies, and terraces, and you also have direct access to a private beach. Your host can provide breakfast to begin the day at a leisurely pace, and if you’re travelling with children, babysitter recommendations are available. There are lots of stairs to climb here, including a spiral staircase in the home, steep steps in the terraced garden, and steps to the private beach, so it won’t suit everyone. Location-wise, you’re in the pretty village of Conca dei Marini with many picturesque coastal towns, including popular Amalfi, within easy driving distance.

This seventeenth-century palace by Lake Orta delivers the ultimate five-star experience. It underwent a total refurbishment recently and while the original architecture has been restored, luxurious finishes and modern comforts have been introduced in all its spaces. Expect open fireplaces, coffered ceilings, incredible original art and designer furniture throughout. Every bedroom and its en-suite are of an equally high standard so all guests are guaranteed a memorable stay. There’s even a telescope in the study so you can explore the area from the comfort of your own home, or go full Rear Window and see what your neighbours are up to down in the harbour. The muted grey tones of the exterior are mirrored in the contemporary kitchen, while the dining room is framed by floor-to-ceiling windows offering the best views in the house. Outside, you’ll find a wooden deck that’s perfect for morning coffees, evening cocktails, and everything in between.

There are a lot of things we like about this lodge in the Alpine village of Cortina d'Amprezzo, but we'd be lying if we didn't single out the rather lovely view from the balcony as our standout highlight – from this spot, it's possible to gaze out over the locale's rooftops and dramatically beautiful mountains beyond.

Back inside, the interior design is as rustic as you might imagine, with an abundance of wood in everything from the walls and floors to the furnishings and finishes. A few pieces of artwork and natural decorative items lend a little character, while the horseshoe-shaped kitchen has enough space for cooking up hearty dinners when you're fresh off the slopes.

Ah yes, skiing – there's plenty of opportunity for winter sports here, with lifts up to the slopes lying within walking distance. Even closer, there are restaurants, shops and a museum within the town to explore.

Just a five-minute walk from the nearest ski lift, this studio apartment is more than handy for skiers and snowboarders. But as the sun beats down in the heat of July, it’s equally wonderful for picturesque bike rides (courtesy of your host). Set on a farm in Tuscany, this house blends rustic charms with a wealth of unforgettable experiences. Designed in classic Tuscan style, the stone walls house wooden beamed ceilings and terracotta floors. The house is one of six rooms and casitas, and guests have access to a vast, crystalline pool that overlooks the rolling hills and vineyards. The farm produces its own Tuscan olive oil and honey, and there is even a top rated restaurant where you can sample some of the farm’s produce. Days can be spent riding the horses from the stable, exploring the area by E-bike, or taking a cookery class at the restaurant, where you might learn how to make fresh pasta or cantuccini. On more relaxed afternoons, treat yourself to a spa or beauty treatment – there is nothing more serene than a massage in the garden, with a gentle breeze and a soundtrack of cicadas.

You will easily fall into the laidback Italian way of life here, and will come away feeling inspired and rejuvenated.

This beautiful verandah leads directly off the l. It offers a shaded dining area, plenty of seating around its perimeter, and easy access to the sun loungers dotted about the lawn. A short stretch of rocky shoreline is all that separates you from the sea, making the lack of a swimming pool a non-issue, as you can simply take a few steps straight into the inviting azure sea when you want to cool off.

If you prefer to feel the sand between your toes, Spiaggia Fontane Bianche is just over a kilometre away. This popular spot offers fine golden sand and dazzling blue waters backed by a small selection of bars and restaurants, where you can dine on fresh Sicilian seafood as you look out over the ocean.

When you've had enough of topping up your tan for the day, why not drive the 16km to the historic city of Syracuse, known for its ancient ruins and the lovely island of Ortigia. In addition to the history, you'll uncover a spectacular selection of lively bars, traditional restaurants and plenty of shops to pick up a holiday memento or two.

An hour or so south, the charming Baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa make for fascinating day trips. In addition, we'd recommend stepping back in time on a visit to the former fishing village of Marzamemi on Sicily's southern tip.

It’s a veritable playground for those that seek relaxation in the terraced gardens, where succulents fill the perfectly positioned flower beds. Lunch can be taken at the round table on the lower terrace, while dinner can be set up on the upper terrace at the more formal spot. Inside, it’s an ode to grandeur as rooms are filled with gallery-worthy sculptures and striking paintings. Parquet flooring intersects with the original salvaged mosaic. We love the light-filled kitchen with its green splashes of trailing botanica. Or, perhaps, the original vaulted ceiling in the basement bedroom with its baby grand piano in the corner. 

Location-wise, you’re in the coastal town of Circeo where a long stretch of beach is just a short walk away. In the other direction, the ancient, walled centre of town awaits with a handful of local trattoria in the shambling streets.

This apartment sits just a few steps from the sea, and only 200 metres from Baia Caddinas, a gentle cove with fine white sand. As if that weren’t enough, you’ll also have access to two shared swimming pools, which look out to sea. The balcony is dreamy, and where you’ll likely spend most of your time, though the rest of the home is charming too. With two bathrooms, it’s plenty big enough for four. You'll need to pay for your linen unless you plan on bringing your own.

From here, you can admire the views and then take the short stroll down to the beach where you’ll also find a small selection of restaurants. You will need a car if you’d like to explore further afield, but there is free private parking. It’s also worth noting there’s no lift access here and that while some of the furniture is a little dated, the apartment has been recently renovated. However, we think most of your time will be spent outdoors – taking advantage of this great location.

This charming holiday home is a relaxing spot ideal for families. It’s just 6 kilometres from Ostuni, which makes for a wonderful day out. You might find that you’re content to stay home, though, once you spot the private pool, the view of olive trees, and the alfresco dining area – there’s a stone table and a barbecue in the shade of a vine-covered pergola. Inside, you can look forward to the traditional architecture of a trullo, built from local stone.

The bedrooms are comfortable and cheery and the brightly coloured bathrooms are sure to put a pep in your step in the mornings. 

When you’re ready to explore, Positano Beach is just a short walk from your doorstep and you’re within touching distance of restaurants, bars and independent shops. After a slap-up seafood dinner by the water, return to your abode to watch the sky swirl in pinks and purples as you sip an Aperol spritz.
