Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.

Its central location, set close to the town’s historic centre crammed with wine bars and a restaurant-lined plaza, will come in handy as there’s no kitchen at this home. It’s also worth noting there’s no living space to speak of. From here, you can easily explore the Amalfi Coast, the island of Capri, and the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Ercolano as well. The apartment itself is cosy and the open-plan living space sleeps two guests on a sofa bed at full occupancy. There’s a small balcony which overlooks the communal gardens and courtyard as well. You’ll also have access to one of the host’s resorts, which has a pool, but this is 10 kilometres away. This apartment offers a comfortable base for exploring this beautiful town.

Found in the small town of Cisano sul Neva, this home is ideal for those months when the temperature starts to rise. The interior feels cooling thanks to the tiling underfoot and the large doorways that let a breeze circulate inside when opened. There's also plenty of shade to be found even when the sun's at its highest — a covered terrace will play host to many a languorous lunch, while the flourishing garden offers plenty of secluded spots for an afternoon nap. That being said, there are enough perks inside the four walls if you're coming during the autumn and winter. An upright piano in the living room will keep musical guests occupied, while the hydro-massage bath requires no such talent to enjoy — just sit back and let the bubbles do their work. The local town and its pretty churches take fifteen minutes to reach on foot, while the seaside town of Albenga can be reached in the same amount of time in the car.

It may be less than a thirty-minute drive from the spectacular Renaissance city of Florence, but this home feels like another world. Located up in the hills, you'll discover a spectacular villa – complete with a clock tower – just outside the small village of Cellai, where time seems to stand still. 

Pad across terracotta-tiled floors, with wood beam ceilings above, and discover rooms filled with character and charm, where period features and modern touches sit effortlessly alongside one another. Nowhere is this better displayed than in the contemporary kitchen and adjoining dining room with its antique stove. Each of the four bedrooms blends rustic charm with supreme comfort, while the bathrooms are fitted out with beautiful tiles and gleaming marble for a touch of luxury.

Step outside and you'll discover a lush landscape of terraced gardens, an inviting pool and breathtaking views over the Tuscan terrain. Your hosts recommend making the trip to Forno La Chiocciola, where you can stock up on Florentine speciality flatbread, schiaccata, each morning. Centuries-old, this farmhouse located in the heart of the Euganean Hills National Park is steeped in history. Owned by the noble Papafava dei Carraresi family since the thirteenth century, the home entwines its charming rural setting with hundreds of years of family history to create a unique space that is sure to captivate the curiosity of its guests. 

Across the property, you'll find numerous different seating areas designed around the arts of relaxation and socialising. The space is idyllic for those in larger groups or celebrating special occasions such as family reunions, birthdays and weddings.

When the sun comes out, there's no better place to soak up some vitamin D than from around the garden's elegant swimming pool. Perch in one of the recliner chairs under the sun umbrellas with a book in hand, before going for a stroll around the herb and flower gardens that surround the villa. 

Located in a private park spreading over 300 acres of rolling hills and green meadows, the home rests at the foot of the Euganean Hills National Park – meaning country strolls or bike rides (with bikes provided by the host) in the local vicinity are simply a must. Soak up the fresh country air fragranced by the wildflowers, fruit trees and plants that grow here. The entire local area offers infinite peace and serenity, yet it remains within easy reach (by car) of other small towns and villages of the region – not to mention the city of Venice which is just a fifty-minute drive away. 

When coming together as a group, serve up alfresco barbecued meals under the pergola paired with local Italian wine. For games nights, get competitive over a round of ping pong before settling down in the living area or suite bedrooms (spread across the main house and the annexe) for more tranquil moments of relaxation.

Start your day on the spacious terrace, drinking in the breath-taking views of the lake while sipping your morning coffee. Whip up breakfast in the elegant stone-tiled kitchen then plan how to spend your day. We could easily spend hours in the rooftop pool, lazily floating in the sunshine with a backdrop of exquisite scenery. 

After you’ve dried off in the sun, head into the historic centre of Padenghe and enjoy lunch in a trattoria. Wander the streets with a gelato, or call into cafes for coffee and watch the world go by – there’s no need to rush, you’re in Italy after all. The jewel in Padenghe’s crown is undoubtedly the castle; whether you’re a history buff or you’re just in it for the views of Garda, it’s well worth strolling five minutes up the hill to explore. Further afield, beautiful Sirmione is less than ten miles away. 

However you spend your stay, make sure you spend at least one evening on the terrace with a glass of something local, watching the sun set slowly over the lake. If you’re anything like us, you’d kick yourself for missing it.

Originating in the 15th century, the house has been restored as a home away from home for those who wish to savour the best that Veneto has to offer. This charming apartment is in the old town of Colle di Val d'Elsa, a typically medieval region of Tuscany famous for crystal glass production. It’s a ten-minute stroll into the centre where you’ll find restaurants, cafés and archaeological museums beyond the ancient town walls. Further afield, the city of Siena is a half-hour drive away, ideal for a day trip.

The apartment itself is housed in a striking 16th-century building just outside the bridge that leads to il Castello. Wood beams on display hark back to the building’s roots, but the decor is decidedly modern. Vibrant modern art is displayed above the plush, L-shaped sofa and the kitchen is a sleek space of white cabinets. The best bit is the view from French-style windows, which shows off golden fields and hills, even though you’re a short walk from the town centre.

You'll find it nestled in verdant hillslopes, boasting five acres of lush landscaped gardens and panoramic views of the medieval town of Valfabbrica. Here, the famous Sentiero di San Francesco hiking trail is practically on your doorstep, while the beautiful towns of Perugia and Assisi are less than a thirty-minute drive away.

At first glance, this home charms with its rustic stone facade. Inside, it's all exposed beam ceilings, terracotta tiled floors and traditional furnishings. We especially love the country kitchen, fully equipped for home cooking and seamlessly connected to the lounge and dining room through wide, sweeping archways. After a restful slumber in the spacious sleeping quarters, fire up the Moka pot and enjoy espressos on the patio. 

Outside, expansive gardens offer ample space for relaxing in the sun. Spend your days catnapping on a sun lounger or tucking into a picnic amidst the foliage. Spend the day at Constanti winery – this is where your host works, so she will be more than happy to give you a tour of the place. Beautiful vineyards surround the loft and a wide range of wineries to sample some of the tastiest glasses of red.

Return home to sit at the dining table while the scent of a home-cooked Italian meal fills the room from the nearby kitchen. After you've eaten, pick a book off of the shelf, and snuggle up on the sofa while the moonlight shines through the windows. Pop the TV on for background noise or simply enjoy the peace and quiet that Montalcino brings.

We were sold on those views of Lake Maggiore alone – and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the panoramic sunny terrace and newly refurbished interiors of this townhouse. As we're finickity, the downstairs living space feels a little bijou, but with that covered panoramic balcony outside, we don't think you'll mind. And kids will love the novelty of the top-floor mezzanine bedroom with a TV den to spill out into. Perched amidst the hillsides, 700 metres above the lake, you're quietly removed from the bustle. But when it's time to dip your toes into lakeside living, Stresa's grand promenades and history-rich streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

Located just a short walk from the centre of Florence, this Santa Maria Novella ticks all the important boxes for us, making it a functional base for city exploring. The fully equipped kitchen and large dining table let you enjoy a hearty breakfast before you head into town, and we like that the home gets plenty of natural light – always a nice way to start the day. When you want to explore, you'll find Strozzi Palace close by, as well as Florence Santa Maria Novella station, connecting you to the rest of Tuscany and beyond.

An open space in a sixteenth-century building, in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at time at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.
