Found close to the northern coastline of the island of Gozo, this home constructed from the island's distinctive honey-coloured stone is somewhere where you can well and truly embrace the slower pace of life.

Summer afternoons can be passed in the swimming pool surrounded by palm trees and loungers or up on the upper-floor terrace complete with a dreamy view of the Maltese countryside. When guests ever get a bit peckish, all you have to do is fire up the brick barbecue and serve up some smoky flavours on the alfresco dining table.

There's plenty to like about what lies inside the home's four walls, which are lined with large grid windows that bathe the space with copious amounts of natural light. The design leans toward the rustic side, with wooden beams, exposed stonework and cool tiled flooring. Fans of indulgent soaks will also appreciate the fact that there are three bathtubs in which to lie back and relax.

Although you can easily have a lovely time without leaving the address, you'll find plenty of distractions in the local area, too. The red sands of Ramla beach take twenty minutes to reach on foot, while Ġgantija temples – thought to have been built in 3600BC – are just over five minutes' drive away.

Chris and his wife, Hanna, hand–selected a bunch of designer, bespoke and vintage pieces to create a modern setup galvanised by retro accents peppered from here to there. The end result? We don’t think there’s a better way to experience the ancient feel of Modica than with a stay at a historic stone home dating back to the 1500s. This home delivers that, along with a few 21st-century touches to keep things feeling luxurious. It’s in the heart of the city, where the narrow streets are home to chi-chi coffee shops and family-run restaurants serving Sicilian cuisine. You’ve even got a view of the ancient church next door from the terraced garden.

Set over stone terraces and patios, the garden is filled with verdant plants and cacti, and feels like a little oasis in the centre of town. Located on the seafront Marina di Noto, it’s within easy reach to some stunning baroque towns of the Noto Valley, seaside resorts, as well as the city of Syracuse.

A short drive away is the fishing village of Marzamemi, while Noto and Syracuse are further afield and ideal for day trips. But, with the beach practically on your doorstep and fantastic sea vistas to marvel at back home, you won't have to travel far to experience Sicilian life. There's also a private swimming pool and terrace ideal for alfresco dining, but the real draw is the rooftop, where a bubbling Jacuzzi awaits. The practical interiors could be more impressive – and two guests will sleep on the sofa bed – but the area, views, and sun-kissed outdoor spaces make it a good choice.

Curated by its owner-architect, this designer apartment in Valetta is chock full of bespoke and vintage pieces sourced from local workshops and markets. It sits in a building over 100 years old, within Valetta’s shambling old streets packed with restaurants and sultry bars. Head to the old harbourfront where colourful wooden boats bob in the water for a cocktail at sunset.

Concrete and terrazzo floors in dove-grey and smooth cement walls give an industrial edge to this apartment and pops of colour come courtesy of towering pot plants and vibrant modern art. The 1960s-style curved kitchenette has everything you need to whip up a quick breakfast and French double doors open up to a slender little balcony overlooking the street. The bathroom is particularly sumptuous in marble and with a free-standing soaking tub in the centre. A wall of French windows bathes this place in natural light. Come sundown, head up to the shared rooftop terrace for a cold drink and watch the sky tinged pink and purple over the sea.

The villa can be found just 100 metres from the seashore in South East Sicily. The pretty fishing village of Marzamemi is just a five-minute drive away, and the beautiful Vendicari Nature Reserve is seven minutes away. This is an ideal base from which to enjoy and explore all that this part of Sicily has to offer.

Eat breakfast on the covered terrace, enjoying the view of the gardens and pool, and beyond to the sea. We’d follow this with a dip in the beautiful pool, or by wandering down to the beach. Our favourite beach, San Lorenzo, is a nineteen-minute walk, or you can nip there in two minutes in the car. Spend the afternoon in Marzamemi, where you can stroll along the cobbled streets and treat yourself to some fresh seafood for lunch – there’s no shortage of picture-perfect eateries along the attractive harbour. 

You have a tough decision to make in the evening – do you watch the sunset from the roof terrace or from the hot tub in the pool? Wherever you choose to enjoy it, make sure you do so with a glass of local wine. Absolute bliss.
