Between its excellent amenities and the beach a short walk away, you'll be set up for a wonderful and relaxing stay. Start by taking a dip in one of your two pools – the infinity pool has spectacular views – and later move on to a game of football or tennis in your private court. Cook indoors or use the summer kitchen outside, barbecue some local fish and enjoy meals late into the night on the impressive terrace. We love the lived-in feel here, with eclectic art and comfortable furnishings. Many of the rooms have distractingly good views – none more so than the bedrooms on the top floor, where you can step out onto a balcony each morning and look out to sea. And youngsters are far from forgotten either. There's a play area indoors, with all sorts of toys and games, and outside you'll find a grassed playground. Grab your buckets and spades and there's a choice of beaches within a twenty-minute drive, along with beachside restaurants and bars.

Just 10km from the beautiful town of Sintra, this traditional home makes a great base from which to explore the Portuguese Riviera. It’s also just 1.5km from Praia das Maçãs beach as well as local restaurants and shops. We recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay, but for relaxing days at home, this villa ticks all the right boxes. The swimming pool can be heated (upon request), there’s a terrace for al fresco dining and the rooms are family-friendly – and with three ground floor bedrooms, this is a lovely option for those with reduced mobility.

As you can probably begin to tell, it's a rather relaxing address. There are lots of spots in the tropical garden in which to appreciate the local tranquillity, whether on the back of a lounger or while dining alfresco on the table. Whenever the temperature takes a dip, you can head back inside and cosy up next to the contemporary fireplace in the lounge.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the locale, there are vast swathes of golden beaches covering the Portuguese coastline that start from as close as 1.5km away, while the nearest town is only 2km away for when you're in need of restaurants and shops.

If we were to tell you of a hideaway that sits in the middle of twelve hectares of lush pine forest in rural Comporta, you might imagine a certain type of home and we're willing to wager that it doesn't look anything like this wonderfully modern residence.

Not only does the boxy white exterior look visually striking from the outside, but this sense of awe will continue as you step through the glass doors. Our favourite space is the double-height living, which is flooded with natural light from the copious number of windows that line the walls. However, the modern brown kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms are sure to take your breath away, as well. The design throughout feels cohesive, united by a preference for clean lines, sleek surfaces and chic minimalism.

Given the agreeable climate that this corner of the Iberian peninsula enjoys, you'll likely want to spend as many hours outdoors as possible and that's easy to do here. The long infinity swimming pool is both wonderfully refreshing when the midday sun is at its highest and made all the more relaxing by the heady scent of fragrant herbs and vegetation that grow around the sides. There are plenty of terraces and balconies on which to take a seat and do nothing more strenuous than soak up the rays, but you can also find a tennis court if you fancy a match or two.

Although there's a strong sense of tranquillity from the isolated position, you don't have to venture far to find the Portuguese coastline. Carvalhal and Pego beaches can be reached in ten minutes or so in the car, and there are a few restaurants and bars to be found close to these seaside spots.
