This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

Freshly renovated, this beautiful apartment is the kind of Lisbon home we daydream about. In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. The stylish neighbourhood of Chiado is a ten-minute walk away, as are the Ribeira Market and Campo das Cebolas.

Perched on top of a renovated townhouse, View & Walkability boasts a fantastic location and a great view from the balcony. Rua de São Nicolau is within walking distance to all the central sights, restaurants, and cafes – but the central location does translate to a vibrant atmosphere that won't suit those who are looking for a tranquil stay. Our favourite hangout spot in this home is the balcony, which is great for a morning coffee, but even on rainy days, the living room gets great natural light. We also loved the eclectic design that mixes the old and new.

Situated in the Lisbon neighbourhood of Santa Catarina, this apartment is bursting with character – much like the surrounding city itself. 

The open living area is wonderfully bright thanks to the row of French doors that run along one wall, which open out to a succession of Juliet balconies whenever you're in need of a burst of fresh air. We like that the design is contemporary but far from cookie-cutter, with lots of unique touches, like the fetching chequered TV stand and the timberwork separating the cooking quarters. It's a similar story in the bedrooms, one of which has a walk-in wardrobe that will really sing to fashionistas paying a visit.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the Portuguese capital, the central location means that you don't have far to walk to reach attractions. The buzzy food stalls in the Mercado da Ribeira are 800 metres from the front door and there are fantastic views to be had from Miradouro de Santa Catarina half that distance away.

Historic Alfama, with its medieval warren of streets, is just a twelve-minute walk from this modern home, while the chic boutiques of Chiado are a fifteen-minute saunter. It's the same walking distance to Sé de Lisboa, the city's beautiful cathedral – although you don't have to go anywhere to admire it, you can see it from this stylish apartment's windows. This laid-back home in Chiado is perfect for those looking to be in the heart of Lisbon’s action. Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. The kitchen, too, is a masterclass in elegant simplicity, concentrating on natural textures – a marble countertop and hardwood floors – and featuring a long table that just begs to be gathered around for morning and evening feasts. The two pared-back bedrooms complete the home, along with an azulejo adorned bathroom that gives the apartment a touch of Portuguese traditionalism. We’re talking hardwood floors, walls filled with bold prints in artfully mismatched frames, sleek leather sofas, and beds that wouldn’t be out of place in a high-end hotel. The kitchen has everything you would need if you weren’t dining out in one of the gazillion acclaimed restaurants that Lisbon is famous for. If local period architecture is of interest to you, you'll love the high, ornately decorated ceilings, the tall windows and the traditional narrow balcony with wrought iron railings. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. Bright and smartly designed, this charming home has been reimagined for the 21st century, with a cool black kitchen, mid-century modern furniture and tasteful wall art. Where do we start with this stylish home – let's begin with the location. This apartment has a fabulous address – walk to Rossio Square, also known as King Pedro IV Square, in just three minutes. Even closer is the Dona Maria II National Theatre, a two-minute saunter, while the Santa Justa Elevator is five minutes on foot. St. George's Castle, which you also have glimpses of from this home, is a twenty-minute stroll.

Back at this apartment, relax on the sofa and take in the vistas of Downtown Lisbon. We love the herringbone-patterned wood floors and chic black and white prints in the living space. Rustle up a cozido à Portuguesa in the modern kitchen if you don't feel like eating out. This place is the ideal bolthole for two couples, a family or business professionals.

The terraces here are practically private viewpoints where you can bask in the sun and admire the entire city – enjoy a meal at the picnic-style table or lounge on the Adirondacks (which double as a spectacular sunset spot). Honestly, in a city known for its miradouros, (meaning viewpoints in Portuguese), it’s possible that you might not find a better one than your own personal terrace. Inside, there's another kind of grandeur with marble floors and fireplaces, rattan bedroom walls and terracotta floor tiles creating an elegant, shabby chic vibe to the penthouse. And lest we forget to mention, you’ll be staying within the walls of Castelo São Jorge. One of Lisbon's best qualities is the fact it's sunny for ten months per year, so we'd like to believe that the view of the Tejo river from the balcony is always this majestic. While this feature might be what draws you in, there's plenty else about this home to enchant you. 

This modern space is located right above the Sé Cathedral, with the dynamic neighbourhood of Alfama – one of the oldest in the city – on your doorstep. In line with the historical location, the interior design contains nods to traditional Portugueses architecture, but the sleek minimalist furniture brings it into the twenty-first century.

Beyond Alfama, this home is the perfect base to explore Lisbon's top sights. Praça do Comércio, the yellow-flanked square you've seen on all the postcards, is a mere ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony.

Less than a five-minute stroll away from Praça do Comércio, Lisbon Cathedral and the River Tagus, this apartment is perfectly placed for exploring. Stroll down Rua Augusta with a coffee and pastry, pop in and out of the independent shops nearby or grab a bite to eat at the array of restaurants on your doorstep. Whatever you fancy – be it historical monuments or lively bars – chances are, it's within walking distance. When you're not taking advantage of this central spot, unwind back at home with a glass of wine and music playing on the Bluetooth speaker. Set within a renovated Pombaline style building, the host's have expertly merged original features with modern design, creating a trendy and clean living space with mid-century furniture, a laid-back natural colour scheme and heaps of natural lights. This studio packs loads of style into its little footprint – bold artwork, copper hanging lamps and a concrete bathroom. The bed is exceptionally comfortable, perfect for catching some much-needed sleep after a long day of sightseeing. Though small, the kitchenette has a coffee machine, toaster and microwave that are ideal for easy meals and snacks to fuel your day. Oh, and we love that TV here is best enjoyed from the bed. Lively, hilly Bairro Alto is right on your doorstep, with plenty of trendy restaurants, bookshops, old-style cafes and boutiques waiting to be checked out. It’s also a bohemian neighbourhood known for its nightlife – where rows of bars dissolve into the street to make one giant outdoor party (don’t worry though, you’ll be tucked safely away on a quiet street). At sunset, check out a view of the city at Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara, just four minutes away. And for more exploring, you’re only a ten-minute walk to Chiado or Principe Real.

Originally part of an ancient convent, the house, which dates back to 1512, was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake. Restored and converted into an apartment, it still carries more than a little of its former grandeur. 

While the shortage of natural light might be a downside for some, we actually love the slightly sombre yet cosy feel of the place, and warm lighting and gorgeous furnishings will make you feel instantly welcome. There is something of a museum-like feel about this place – and we mean this in the best possible way. How often do you find yourself wanting to lounge about period sofas and look inside antique books while wandering around museums? Well, here you get the chance to realise this dream – history is your playground. 

But it isn’t all old-school artefacts – there are enough modern touches to make your stay comfortable, and you’ll find all the necessary amenities to have a truly relaxed and restful time.
 
The feeling of being steeped in history extends beyond the walls of the apartment itself – outside your front door, you’ll find yourself in the very heart of Alfama, the oldest and most characterful of Lisbon’s districts. You’ll be in the ideal spot from which to explore and enjoy all of the wonders this magical city has to offer.

Other attractions nearby include Lisbon Cathedral, under a twenty-minute walk and the Elevador De Santa Justa, a ten-minute saunter.

Back at this lovely apartment, take in the fabulous views over the River Tagus with a glass of rosé wine – we love the traditional tiles here too. In cities across the globe, it's more often than not true that the closer a home is to the centre, the less likely it is that it'll have any outdoor space. This apartment in the middle of Lisbon bucks this trend – not only does it have a private terrace with an alfresco dining table, but guests also get access to a communal garden that's blessed with bountiful amounts of plant life.

While these respective spaces are an explosion of colour, the home's interior is much simpler by contrast. The walls and ceilings are painted stark white, which makes it feel instantly bright and welcoming. There's a minimalist approach to furnishings and decoration, although the kitchen that could kindly be described as space-efficient perhaps embraces this trend a little too much. Aside from that, there's very little to fault with this simple but elegant home.

To top it all off, the location is excellent regardless if you're visiting Lisbon for the first or fiftieth time. Both Museu Nacional do Azulejo and Castelo de São Jorge can be reached in around twenty minutes on foot, albeit in opposite directions, while Praça do Comércio takes all of eighteen minutes to reach on the tram.

Situated in the charming area of Graça, this luminous flat is a cosy retreat in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods. The sun-kissed private terrace is our favourite spot. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

Blue Creek is an immaculate home, located in downtown Lisbon – which is perfect if you want to explore the city on foot. The neighbourhood is always busy with tourists, especially this close to Praça do Comércio, which means you'll have to walk a bit farther away to get a more authentic atmosphere – but the brunch cafes around here are amazing. This is a modern, bright home with high ceilings and modern furniture. It's also equipped with everything you might need to feel comfortable, from extra cutlery to generous storage space.

Although it's nestled in the heart of beautiful Bairro Alto, the surrounding narrow streets have a quiet and distinctly village-like feel where locals know each other and the streets are filled with coffee shops, concept stores, restaurants and art galleries. By night, it's a whole other story – the neighbourhood fills with people and the streets become outdoor extensions of the many bars in the area. Your home will be a lovely peaceful spot that’s still near all the action – trendy Chiado is just an eight-minute walk away. Our favourite spot of the apartment has got to be the southwest-facing balcony – it’s narrow but long, and offers up incredible views of the River Tagus and the 25th April Bridge at sunset. Bring your evening aperitif outside as you watch the sky’s colours change, or enjoy your morning coffees out here as day settles over the city. The inside of the house is extremely welcoming – there’s a large marble dining table for meals all together and a bright, stylish living room that’s been dynamically designed. At the end of a long day, wash up in the roomy bathrooms before settling in the bedrooms, where you’ll rest easy in anticipation of another beautiful Lisbon day tomorrow.

Thanks to its central location in Lisbon's bohemian Bairro Alto, this apartment is the perfect base to explore the Portuguese capital. Walk the winding streets of this neighbourhood to immerse yourself in the culture and architecture of Lisbon. When the hills get a bit too much, you can always hop onto one of the iconic trams as they weave their way through the city. You're four minutes' walk from the breathtaking city views of Miradouro de São Pedro, a six-minute walk from the opulent interior of the Church of Sao Roque, and six minutes from the mournful sounds of fado that accompany dinner at legendary Lisbon restaurant, Adega Machado. At the end of a day of exploring, retreat to your sleek and modern home, where traditional features harmoniously coexist with minimalist modern furniture – it's a stark contrast to the art-daubed cobbled streets below. Located in a historical building in Picoas, which was designed by the esteemed Modernist architect Cassiano Branco, Mind Garden is a unique home. While the furniture is quite unobtrusive, the bare architectural bones take centre stage, expressing themselves most obviously in the dining pavilion. Natural light will never be a problem in this home, but taller guests might not appreciate the sloping ceilings in the communal area. While the streets of Picoas aren't as central as Baixa, they are extremely well-connected to the riverside while maintaining a local flavour.

Mind Garden

Located in the bustling neighbourhood of Baixa and surrounded by a glorious array of Pombaline architecture, this home offers a gateway to Lisbon's historic heart. You really couldn't ask for a better location, with the spectacular waterfront Commerce Square and the majestic Rua Augusta Arch just a six-minute stroll from your doorstep. 

Inside, it's all high ceilings, hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows, setting a serene canvas for relaxation. We especially love the open-plan living space, flaunting an elegant lounge – dressed to the nines with plush seating and a regal chandelier – and access to not one but two Juliet balconies. Spend mornings roosted here, sipping espresso and watching the street below awaken from its slumber. Before a busy day of exploring, gather at the round table for breakfast, prepared in the fully-equipped kitchen. Though if you'd prefer to sample the local cuisine, pop into Nicolau Lisboa for brunch, a one-minute stroll from your doorstep.

Indulgently large for such a central Lisbon apartment, this open-plan space would be great for socializing. Situated in the Chiado district you’re right amongst some of the big attractions –the National Museum of Contemporary Art is a short walk away. This home would make the perfect base for those wanting to be bang in the center. We love the Portuguese tiles decorating the building entrance!

Miguel used to live in Hunter, and it’s immediately clear that the flat used to be someone’s home. Things like the quality of the mattresses really stand out, as they are often overlooked in rental homes, but that isn’t the case here. The design is, of course, eye-catching – you don’t need us to tell you that – and even if not everyone goes for it, they will go for the views from the balcony. Throw in the fantastic location near in Chiado, and you’re onto a winner.


Hunter

Surrounded by centuries-old houses in Lisbon’s Alfama district, this bright apartment located in a colourful, traditional building is a treat for first-time tourists and seasoned visitors alike. A cool Scandi vibe sets a clean, laid-back tone from the moment you walk through the door, with a sofa perfectly positioned by the living room’s tall window to enjoy leafy neighbourhood views. We love the openness of this home’s layout which lets the sunlight pour in from one room to the next, while the bedroom feels like a snug cocoon with its simple yet elegant wood accents. We particularly like the handy vestibule that lets you fall asleep – doors open – to the outside’s breeze. Factor in a luxurious rainfall shower and you’ve got everything you need here for a blissfully relaxing stay. Outside of your home, you’re just a three-minute walk from the Miradouro das Portas do Sol viewing point, a four-minute walk from São Jorge Castle and a fifteen-minute stroll from bustling Praça do Comércio.

Tucked away inside a typical Lisbon townhouse, this cute and characterful space is a delightful surprise. With a wooden Pombaline frame that transforms the communal area into a library, this home is an excellent option for an avid reader – the outdoor balcony will win over the rest with gorgeous views of the nearby botanical garden. While most visitors flock to the likes of Alfama and Bairro Alto, this stunning apartment is located in the heart of Principe Real. Admittedly, it's further away from the historical city centre, but its pastel-coloured mansion apartments and wide boulevards provide it with a charm all of its own. You'll find the enchanting ten-acre Jardim Botânico de Lisboa and the lush Jardim do Príncipe Real within a five-minute walk. While your capable kitchen can handle anything you can throw at/over it, you're spoiled for choice when it comes to local eateries – it's a veritable foodie heaven. Choose to chow down at A Cevicheria, where you can indulge in a light and zesty menu of citrus-cured fish and mouth-puckering pisco sours. Alternatively, Atalho Real plates up melt-in-the-mouth meat in a relaxed environment. Once you've eaten your fill, there's a tempting choice of local bars where you can keep the party going – Pavilhão Chinês serves imaginative long drinks in an old grocery store packed with flea market finds and bric-a-brac. At the same time, cult favourite Foxtrot might be reminiscent of a good old British pub, but the creative cocktail menu promises so much more.

This apartment in the heart of Lisbon is an ideal place to stay whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure. While the home can sleep four, with two on the sofa bed in the living space, it might be a squeeze for that many people. The kitchen is better for light bites, but if you want something more substantial, there’s no shortage of restaurants on the doorstep. If sightseeing is on the agenda, the Arco da Rua Augusta and Lisbon Cathedral are a short walk away.

It's a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, one of the city's most emblematic squares with its large, harbour-facing plaza and array of cafes and museums. The fashionable district of Chiado, with its stylish boutiques, is a six-minute saunter. Or, head to the Timeout Market – here, you'll find over 20 restaurants and music venue bars, as well as shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers (just over ten minutes on foot).

Back at this home, housed in a beautifully restored townhouse, old blends with the new. Think sleek kitchen, niches with vases of blooms and traditional tiles. Do some yoga poses on the mats provided by your hosts, or simply relax on the sofa with a drink. There's plenty of natural light here, which helps the plants dotted around to thrive. We really enjoyed the urban view from the balconet too. Last but not least, the marble-clad bathrooms add a dash of luxury. This place is ideal for a couple or friends looking for a fabulous Baixa location.



High Walkability

Staying this close to Praça do Comércio is great if you've only got a few days to immerse yourself in the city. Baixa is a treasury of sights, although it comes with a caveat of authenticity – the area is usually buzzing with tourists, and you'll have to travel a little if you want a more local feel. Green Creek is an immaculate home that simply feels high-end. The furniture is elegant, the natural light is fantastic, the design vision is coherent, and we loved the preserved gaiolas pombalinas that separate the dining from the living room areas.

In this Baixa location – also known as Pombalina Downtown – it’s no surprise that you can find some of the finest examples of traditional architecture in the city. Of course, this apartment is no exception. Only a four-minute walk to Lisbon Cathedral, and six to the bustling, harbour-facing square, Praça do Comércio, this renovated building is no less impressive than its local surroundings. We love the care and attention to detail that has gone into this apartment, which retains the building's original architectural features, as well as reusing debris from historic earthquakes. The beautiful timber structures that you’ll notice right away in the lounge are typical of the pombalina style and practicalities. Some antique tiles, recovered from the 1755 disaster, have been made into panels that adorn the corridors. It's not all about the history here though – there are plenty of modern touches too. You’ll have an array of contemporary art to peruse, as well as Bluetooth speakers and a sleek, charcoal-coloured kitchen. After exploring every corner of this elegant home, pour a glass of vinho verde and take in the views from the French doors of the ornate Juliet balcony.

Metres from the National Pantheon and the city’s famous Feira da Ladra flea market, this Alfama apartment is right in the heart of historic Lisbon. Inside, it’s a more modern affair with geometric feature walls, splashes of colour and mid-century furnishings. Enjoy the sweet and fluffy bolas de Berlim from your welcome hamper with a full-bodied espresso in the morning – eat together at the dining table or take a moment for yourself on the Juliet balcony, watching people come and go in the streets below as bedsheets flutter on washing lines. Wander through the higgledy-piggledy alleyways, discovering traditional tavernas shaded by orange trees in cobbled squares. Santa Apolónia metro station is a ten-minute walk downhill, connecting you to downtown. Come back to your neighbourhood just before dusk – the Miradouro de Santa Luzia is, in our opinion, the best spot to watch the sunset – especially with a glass of Vinho Verde from the kiosk.

With an impressive selection of museums, theatres, cinemas, and restaurants all close by, it's easy to see why this sunny home in the heart of Lisbon is so popular. As it's on the sixth floor with beautiful big windows, it does get a little toasty in the summer months. But the view from the open-plan living room overlooking the Tagus River below is truly breathtaking. We loved the Brigitte Bardot portrait and sporadic placement of bright prints and sculptures. 

Sugar Rush

A practical base that’s all primed for sightseeing, this apartment ticks a lot of boxes for a fuss-free city stay. While the contemporary decor isn’t the most inspiring in our collection, a well-proportioned kitchen and French doors leading out onto a Juliet balcony are nice touches here. Well suited to those looking to drop their bags and set off for some exploring, it puts you just a one-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and a three-minute stroll from the Santa Justa Lift.


The Magician's Daughter

This fantastic home is located in Bairro Alto, with all of its fantastic restaurants and bars. If you fancy a bit of shopping, Chiado is a ten-minute stroll away – its streets are packed with chic boutiques, interesting bookshops and literary cafes. Take some snaps of the beautiful Lisbon Cathedral, a twenty-minute walk from this home, or explore São Jorge Castle, a twelve-minute saunter. Time Out Market, on the other hand, is just over ten minutes on foot – browse its shops and market vendors selling fresh food and flowers. You’ll also find over twenty restaurants and stylish music venues here (your host can make dinner reservations for you). If you don’t want to eat out, cook some local Portuguese produce from the market in the sleek kitchen – we adore this bright, open-plan space – there's a splendid socially conducive atmosphere here. This place has been playfully and expertly designed by your lovely host Patrícia. Thanks to the high-quality furniture and materials, this home looks and feels amazing – once you stay, you won't want to leave.

Lisbon’s terracotta-topped buildings stretch out below this apartment, in the middle of the city’s most cultured neighbourhood. Quiet and laid-back during the day, Bairro Alto comes to life at night – characteristics that are echoed throughout the rooms of this home. The underlying neutral palette of the living spaces is offset by colourful art, coloured accents and a wall-mounted sculpture over the master bed, giving the rooms a touch of quirk and vibrancy. With two bedrooms and two bathrooms, the four of you will have a comfortable stay for sure. There’s plenty of space for two couples to enjoy time to themselves, but also to come together for a home-delivered breakfast or drinks on the balcony, perhaps. When you decide to venture out, the city's sights and many restaurants and bars are within easy walking distance.

You’ll find this rather dapper apartment right in the heart of Baixa, Lisbon’s most elegant and historic district. Housed in a carefully restored Pombaline period property, the designers have deliberately kept the apartment contemporary and sleek. 

Touches of mid-century and matt black finishes fuse perfectly with its historic surroundings, including the restored stone in the bedroom and the antique wooden salting chests. Beautiful wrought-iron Juliette balconies bathe the apartment in natural light and reveal impressive views of the city, River Tagus and São Jorge Castle in the distance. It's the perfect spot to perch with your morning coffee as you hatch plans for the day ahead. 

And when the city comes calling, you’re perfectly situated to explore Lisbon, with the upmarket Chiado district just ten minutes away on foot. Make sure to visit Lisbon’s biggest and most impressive food market, Mercado da Ribeira (a ten-minute walk) for a bit of lunch. Then potter over to Campo das Cebolas on the banks of the river to soak in the atmosphere of this captivating city.

Staying in this home is a bit like exploration at first – it might seem simple and minimalist, but there's a great number of details hidden all around. You can tell the hosts are artists, and they've selected each piece with care. Even though this home doesn't have as much natural light as it deserves, The Talking Heads maximises on its assets with clever lighting. We loved the large vintage mirror in the living room that makes the space even bigger.
