From its enviable position in the centre of Porto, this stylish yet functional apartment is an excellent choice for families and groups of friends alike. The open-plan living space is perfectly proportioned, with enough room for entertaining your loved ones or enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of coffee. We had a particular soft spot for the individually designed bedrooms and we loved the kitchen’s handy serving hatch.

When you’re ready to explore your surroundings. Begin with a trip to Porto Cathedral, just a short walk from your building. Or why not head down to the water? Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint. 

Peach & Emerald

Set in the heart of Porto, this apartment provides easy access to the historical marvels dotting the city – and when you want to travel further afield, the closest metro is a mere ten-minute walk. So, while this fuss-free home may not be filled with luxurious finishes, it’s all about the location for us. It’s a comfortable space for four people, just bear in mind that the second bedroom is an interior room, so lacks natural light. That said, we think this makes it a perfect spot for a restful, undisturbed sleep.

Porto's Heritage Heart

Location doesn’t get much better than this in Porto – on a charming shopping street just a couple of streets away from Sao Bento train station. It’s the ideal position to explore the city on foot, with the ancient azulejo-tiled churches and baroque towers punctuating orange-roofed buildings. On your doorstep, you’ve got family-run restaurants, charming coffee shops and bakeries serving oven-fresh custard tarts. Plus, the famous wine warehouses that line the Douro at Ribeira are just a short stroll away.

This studio apartment is a stylish spot to return to after a day exploring downtown Porto. Modern, monochrome artworks sit against striking bottle-green walls, but the first thing that caught our attention was the wall of stone-framed windows, looking out over the tiled buildings of your typical Porto street. Throwing these open, you can listen to the chatter from the street waking up in the morning while dozing in the comfy bed before settling in at plush velvet chairs for a classic breakfast of custard tarts and coffee. 

Rich Green & Wicker

This gorgeous studio apartment offers you the chance to immerse yourself in Porto's beating heart. Located in the Clérigos area, between Jardim da Cordoaria and Jardim Municipal do Horto das Virtudes, it's ideal for guests who want to combine city living with easy access to some green space. 

The home may be petite, but the clever layout really maximises the space available. Step inside, and you'll find a sleek kitchen where you can whip up your favourite dishes to enjoy at the cute round table as sunlight streams in through the window. If you need to catch up on work, or are feeling inspired to start writing your novel, there's a desk space where you can use your laptop. And, when evening rolls around, you only need to pad up a couple of steps to curl up in the comfy bed for a great night's sleep. 

From here, the baroque Clérigos Tower is just a four-minute walk away, as is the Igreja do Carmo with its tiled facade. Book lovers will be delighted that the Livraria Lello is five minutes away, and foodies are spoilt for choice with the range of restaurants and port cellars in the surrounding streets. And, with the Duoro River just a ten-minute walk away, you can schedule a boat trip to see the city from a new perspective. 

Twin Gardens

Try a slice of Porto life at this immaculately presented studio apartment, standing proud along one of the city’s oldest streets. Housed in a period building once home to 18th Century bourgeoisie society, the picture windows and ornate balcony that wraps the length of this home remain to tell of its deep history. And though it’s a studio space, we think it’s beautifully formed and full of charm. Ideally suited for a romantic break for two or a single traveller, there’s a cosy nook for your morning breakfast and a well-kitted-out kitchen area for rustling up a light meal. Though let’s face it, in the land of smoked cheese, cured meats, Atlantic-caught seafood, and Pastel de Nata, we suspect you’ll be dining out, a lot. And you won’t have far to go to find all the delicacies, or indeed must-see sights, of the city. You’re just five minutes from some of the city’s most happening bars and restaurants and a twenty-minute stroll from the Duoro River. The famous Livraria Lello, where Harry Potter was born is just around the corner. So is the Clérigos Tower viewpoint – the perfect spot to admire this picture-postcard pretty city.

Uptown Rock

Larger groups looking for a fabulous place to stay in Porto will love this smart apartment. Located in the Bolhão district, right in the centre, it's a fantastic place to begin your adventures in the city. 

Step inside, and you'll find a tranquil space with plenty of contemporary style. The open-plan kitchen and living space are ideal for socialising – you'll love whipping up a feast to share together at the long dining table. Afterwards, you can all settle down on the comfy sofas to sip a couple of glasses of locally-made port and make some plans for the following day. 

A fifteen-minute walk will bring you to the famous Livraria Lello, a haven for book lovers. Architecture fans can visit the city's famous churches, Igreja dos Clérigos and Igreja de Santo Ildefonso, also fifteen minutes away on foot. And, when you need to refuel, you're spoilt for choice with a range of nearby restaurants and port houses where you can eat and drink delicious local delicacies. 

Silver Halo

We had to break from doing some serious shopping to tell you about this Porto gem. This elegant apartment, housed in a recently renovated 20th-century building, is located right in the heart of the pedestrianised retail hub of Rua Santa Catarina. For fresh produce and a vibrant atmosphere, head to Mercado do Bolhão, a three-minute walk away. It's not all about shopping, though – the Chapel of Souls is a two-minute walk away, where you'll discover its beautiful azulejo tiled façade. Or take a break in the Café Majestic, a beautiful Art Nouveau café, a five-minute walk from this home. A little further, Porto Cathedral is fourteen minutes on foot. Then stop off at the small port wine shop opposite this home and take some back to this apartment.

Inside, there are furnishings from Portuguese designers and artists. Lots of large windows allow light to flood in. We adore the spacious open plan living space with its two French doors, which open onto a small balustraded balcony overlooking the street. Off the bedroom, there's a secluded terrace too, perfect for a coffee or glass of Port. Later, chill out on the mezzanine level or have a game of chess. There's plenty of room for a family or friends to spread out here. If you prefer to eat in, whip up a bacalhau à Gomes (cod casserole) in the modern kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. Honestly, though, you probably won't be spending that much time indoors with so much on your doorstep.



Blue Sails

Make yourself at home in this stunning top-floor apartment situated in the heart of Porto. The first thing you'll notice is that your hosts have taken great care to preserve the original nineteenth-century features of this home while adding sophistication and style into the mix. Alongside stone walls, exposed timber frames and original wood flooring, you'll encounter bold printed wallpaper, mid-century furniture and plenty of gold accents to add a touch of luxury.

With its elevated top-floor position and sky-high vaulted ceiling, every corner of this city-centre flat is illuminated by natural light – a real rarity in these older buildings. We loved the covered balcony, where we could imagine nothing better than sitting in the wicker throne, a glass of local wine in hand, as the sound of live music drifts up from the streets below. Despite the central location, the apartment is calm and tranquil, making it perfect for families with children – especially when you add the second bunk room into the mix.

Down at street level, the neighbourhood has everything you could need, including traditional restaurants, cool cafes and well-stocked supermarkets. Meanwhile, Porto's main sights are within easy walking distance, with the riverfront promenade at Cais da Ribeira and the Neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa both a twenty-minute walk away.


Lofty Expectations

Style and practicality go hand-in-hand at this Lapa district apartment designed by the famed architect Siza Vieira. Each bedroom is as light-filled as the next, thanks to those floor-to-ceiling Juliet balcony windows, and there’s a twin bedroom tailor-made for little ones. It’s worth noting the Metro overground runs close to this home – handy for getting about the city, but the passing trains may take some getting used to. But for a home this central, that’s all par of the course.

Vieira's Place

Cedofeita is slightly off the beaten track, but still a part of Porto's busy city centre. After you pass the neighbourhood's cosy cafes and art galleries, you'll quickly get to the riverside and other central sights. Fernando & Amalia is a simple, immaculate home with ample natural light and high-quality furniture. The building faces a busy street, which is great if you want to grab a taxi – but the communal areas are a little noisy with the windows open. We did, however, like the Porto-inspired art prints in the living room.

Prepare to be dazzled by this top-floor apartment perched right in the heart of Porto's old quarter. This place offers up astonishing views of the historic Baixa district - and an impressive outdoor terrace to soak it all up.

Lose yourself to the views of the quarter's ancient squires, rising up from a higgledy-piggledy maze of terracotta rooftops. And if you're impressed with it now, just think how amazing it looks at night as Porto's lights flicker on.

If you can bear to part your gaze from the terrace, you'll discover this home delivers the goods on the inside too. Spread out over two floors and glowing from top-to-toe in crisp white, midcentury-inspired furniture and statement lighting is all that's needed to add warmth and style here. 

Climb the stairs to discover three pristine and light-filled bedrooms – and thanks to its top-floor setting and room-darkening shutters, you'll be sure to bank a peaceful night's sleep here.

Away from this luxurious apartment, you'll find all of Porto's hotspots close by, including Bolhão Market, Santa Catarina Street, and Aliados Avenue with a mere seven-minute stroll. Or jump on the metro just three minutes from your door to discover other corners of the city. Now, how's that for a location?

The View From Here

Delicate and soft, this baby blue apartment has plenty of surprises waiting for you. We're swooning over the features – the coffered ceilings wouldn't be amiss in a royal palace, while the iron on the arched window is intricate and charming. Add in the cushy orange sofa, parquet flooring and decadently tiled bathroom and it's love at first sight. The layout is also unique – technically, it's more of a studio, but a glass wall keeps the bedroom separate from the living space. The kitchen is a little basic, but we don't mind – if anything, it gives you an excuse to sample the many delicious eateries in Porto.  

But the best part, by far, is the excellent location. Palácio da Bolsa is two minutes away, and there are cafes, bars and boutiques aplenty on your doorstep. Pretty much everything is within walking distance – be it markets or museums – so we think a couple or solo traveller will be happy to call this place home. Wander down the famous alleys of Ribeira do Porto (a four-minute walk), grab a cocktail at one of the riverside restaurants or just stroll along the Douro and soak up the magic of Porto.
