Located in a historical building in Picoas, which was designed by the esteemed Modernist architect Cassiano Branco, Mind Garden is a unique home. While the furniture is quite unobtrusive, the bare architectural bones take centre stage, expressing themselves most obviously in the dining pavilion. Natural light will never be a problem in this home, but taller guests might not appreciate the sloping ceilings in the communal area. While the streets of Picoas aren't as central as Baixa, they are extremely well-connected to the riverside while maintaining a local flavour.

Mind Garden

This apartment might be modern, but the view is all old-world Lisbon. Inside, the living room feels like a 60s entertainer’s paradise, with velvet sofas, gallery-white walls and curious sculptures lining the room. Slide open the wall of glass and step out onto the terrace which has a view of modern Lisbon in one direction, and the orange roofs and townhouses of old in the other. The kitchen continues the charming retro theme, where lipstick red dining chairs offer space for the whole group. The master bedroom feels super plush with a purple velvet feature headboard, while the twin room is a cheerful shade of sunflower-yellow. We love the little nod to Portuguese tradition in the azelujo tiles in the family bathroom. This place is in the modern neighbourhood of Saldanha, a haven of sleek shopping streets and ultra-modern coffee shops. A twenty-minute stroll sees you in the winding, cobbled streets of Alfama, crowned with a castle, or the grand streets of Baixa packed with local restaurants and bars.

Mid-Century Modern

This pad in Campo Pequeno is a quieter spot to enjoy Lisbon, though within easy walking distance of a metro. It’s a small but stylish space with a sofa for sinking into with an icy vermouth, a record player for spinning vinyl to set the evening tone, and a cosy dining nook for Portuguese feasts – make sure to pick up some authentic ingredients from your local deli. There are two sleek desk spaces for when you need to fire off some emails, and our favourite spot might be the balcony, where you can sip a sundowner. When you’re ready to explore, grab a pastéis de nata and a coffee at a kiosk, then stroll around the Jardim da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, where you’ll also find Museu Calouste Gulbenkian and Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian (CAM).

The Renaissance Library

Bookworms listen up – this home showcases such a huge amount and vast range of books, you'll absolutely never get bored. With reads in all different languages, you'll be captivated by the vast variety of literature decorating the home. Just remember to leave the apartment every once in a while, because Lisbon is at your doorstep and you're positioned in one of the most central, picturesque and safe neighbourhoods of the city. Stroll just two minutes and you'll arrive at the Amoreiras Garden – a firm favourite hang out spot for the locals. And with charming cafes, street art, trendy second-hand stores and one of Lisbon's best chocolate shops all within walking proximity of your home, you don't have to venture too far to lap up the best parts of Portuguese local living here.

By the Books

Located right next to the leafy gardens of the Gulbenkian Foundation and Museum, this bright apartment is the ideal stay for those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of central Lisbon. Though this neighbourhood is set a little further from the busier stretches of town, there are plenty of places nearby to grab a cup of coffee, do some boutique shopping or tuck into a delicious dinner. And with a metro station just a ten-minute walk away, getting around the rest of the city is a breeze. You'll love retreating to this quiet neck of the woods after a busy day, and this sleek and cosy apartment is the definition of relaxing. With a modern kitchen, comfortable living room (the plush blue couch is perfect for lounging) and stylish bedrooms, you'll have everything you need to feel completely at home. Maria, your friendly host, even leaves a bottle of Portuguese wine for you to enjoy. Take it out onto the balcony – which overlooks the gardens – and savour it as the sun goes down.

Put a Cork in It

Designed by the esteemed French design duo Garcé and Dimofski, this apartment is one of a kind. A substantial renovation saw the home transformed into a mecca of contemporary design, though they were careful to preserve and restore historical elements. The result is a stunning apartment that features ornate ceilings alongside modern art and sculptural furniture. Garcé and Dimofski collaborated with artists and designers from around the world – every detail has a story. We love the Portuguese marble in the main en-suite bathroom. If you can tear yourself away from this stunning home, you’ll be close to Baixa and Alfama, within easy reach of viewpoints and tourist attractions.

Little Jewel

From the red brick facade of the 19th-century bullring of Campo Pequeno, it’s hard to believe that just an eight-minute walk would take you to such a deluxe, modern apartment. In the north of the city, slightly off the tourist track, you’ll also find other lesser-known charms such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Garden – a sculpture park and museum – twelve minutes away. But with the historic centre less than twenty minutes away by metro, you're not exactly missing out on much.

After exploring the delights of Lisbon (and feeling full of pastéis de nata) arriving home to this spacious apartment is a dream. The grand living space features animal skin rugs and mid-century seating along with a modern, perspex coffee table. This mixture of eras and styles creates a sophisticated space where you can relax with a glass of douro on the sofa, or perch on the balcony with a vinho verde.

Draw yourself away from the views of the vibrant, pink of the neighbouring buildings, and head in to freshen up in Portuguese white marble bathrooms. And for a final flourish, the dining space is ready to host elegant dinner parties – why not try cooking bacalhau à Brás to really set the scene?

Pastel & Pink

Perched in a residential spot in the heart of sunny Lisbon, this stylish apartment features both an on point location and impeccable design details. As you arrive inside the space, you'll be welcomed by the home's contemporary interiors that contrast different textures to create a soothing space from which you can relax in style. However, it's the finer details of this place that allow it to stand out from the rest, from the custom neon light to the matte finish feature walls and optimal dedicated desk space – the space goes above and beyond to serve its guests with a pleasing experience. We particularly love the colour palette of the calming peppermint bathroom – it provides the perfect place to pamper yourselves after an active day of discovering the city. Enjoy the just as green leafy neighbourhood from the privacy of one of the home's balconies, or better still, set off on an adventure to explore Lisbon's on foot or via the world-renowned public tramway? You'll be positioned just a thirty-minute walk away from the centre of town or an even quicker fifteen minutes away by public transport.

Touch of Texture

From the sun-kissed terrace to the stylish interiors, this apartment is a winner. It's a great base for a couple or solo travellers, though a sofa bed can be used upon request. Planning to work from home? You'll find a desk in the living area, alongside a record player so you can listen to some tunes while you work. The kitchen isn't the biggest, but the terrace makes up for it – there's plenty of space to sprawl out with a cocktail in the sun. Location-wise, this neighbourhood is known for its traditional Portuguese architecture, local atmosphere, and great transport links into central Lisbon.

Lisboa Light

This building has lived a few lives since it was built in the 1940s. It was designed by the renowned Portuguese architect Manuel Norte Júnior, before being used as a garage for storing car parts. After lying unoccupied for a decade, it was then lovingly restored with a focus on high end furniture and plenty of colourful touches. We particularly enjoyed the huge terrace – not only does it come with a stylish bar where you can mix cocktails, but there’s also plenty of space for alfresco dining and spending time with your loved ones. You'll also find a unique stained glass window in the kitchen, which makes the ideal spot for enjoying morning coffee. Although it's a little out of Lisbon's city centre, the surrounding Saldanha neighborhood has plenty of local restaurants and you can walk to the downtown riverfront area in forty minutes.

Flight of Fancy

Elegant, modern and with a distinctly Japanese-inspired feel, this beautiful apartment just outside Parque Eduardo VII in Lisbon’s Santo António neighbourhood provides a wonderfully peaceful base. Paying homage to the serenity of mountain landscapes, the home’s design focuses on mellow, natural colour palettes, soft furnishings and wooden accents to create a wholly peaceful space in which to unwind. We love the delicate hanging fabric above the sofa and the bamboo shades on the French doors. Open these up to reveal three charming balconies overlooking a leafy boulevard – the ideal spot for morning coffees and glasses of wine at sunset. There’s a desk in the living room too should you need to catch up on work and a record player to get soirées around the dining table off on the right beat. The two bedrooms, meanwhile, are equally soothing, providing dreamy canvases for a blissful night’s sleep thanks to their warm, dark palettes and comfortable beds. Outside of your home, Avenida da Liberdade’s high-end shops are a ten-minute walk away, Parque Eduardo VII is walkable in eight and Bairro Alto’s cobblestone streets – lined with traditional restaurants and Fado bars – are fifteen minutes away by bus.
