There's the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, where the permanent collection of photography and paintings is often joined by world-class exhibitions; and finally, the extinct volcano of Arthur’s Seat, which towers over the city and is worth the climb for the views alone.
Take a distillery tour Whisky has been brewed in these parts for at least 500 years, and it’s as intrinsically Scottish as kilts, tartan and haggis. There are over 100 distilleries around the country, so no matter where you’re staying, going to see where the magic’s made is one of the best things to do in Scotland.
Take a trip to the islands Scotland’s rugged coastline has a number of tiny isles that make for an ideal getaway, and visiting them is one of the top things to do in Scotland. With the larger groups of islands served by regular ferries it’s relatively easy to take in two or three different places in one short holiday.

You can't miss Edinburgh Castle, standing proudly above the city centre. If you time your tour correctly, you might get to see the one o'clock gun in action!
There's something for everyone at the National Museum of Scotland – you can learn about history, explore the natural world, or admire the design innovation.
The Royal Mile is (almost) a mile long and runs from the Castle down to Holyrood Palace. Take a walk to explore the streets of Edinburgh's historic Old Town.
Learn about some of Edinburgh's darker history at Mary King's Close - a now underground street bricked up during the plague in the 17th century.
It's hard to miss the spiky, gothic grandeur of St Giles Cathedral. Visit to admire the building's history, attend a service, or listen to a concert.
