Perched on Portal Mountain, this house sits on forty acres of high desert with granite boulders, pine trees, and private hiking trails rolling out in every direction. The interiors are a world apart – hand-carved antique columns, artefacts gathered from Morocco, India, and the Middle East, and a main bedroom with a vaulted Moroccan ceiling and spa-like bath gazing out at the mountains. Outside, a cowboy pool nestled among the boulders, a rock spa hot tub, and a vintage 1970s lounge hangar keep things playful long after the sun goes down.

Home truths

  • While the cowboy pool, hot tub, and some of the bathrooms aren't photographed, expect the style and quality to be consistent with the rest of the home.

  • The villa sits on 40 acres of boulder-strewn terrain at elevation – expect uneven ground, rocky paths, and natural desert landscape between the various outdoor features. It's a wonderful place to explore, but not one suited to guests with significant mobility limitations.

  • This home is set deep in the high desert – you'll need a car for everything, from groceries to the nearest town. Yucca Valley's shops and restaurants are a fifteen-minute drive away, and Joshua Tree National Park is twenty-five minutes out.

Local guide

About Pioneertown

Drive a couple of hours east of Los Angeles, and you’re in a different world. Nowhere is that more apparent than Joshua Tree with its many artist residences, rugged rock formations, and stark desert landscapes. Named after the twisted, bristled Joshua Tree, a stay in this little Mojave desert community is synonymous with art exhibitions, beautiful night skies, hikes, delicious food, and plenty of hours lounging about in aesthetically pleasing surroundings.
