Floor-to-ceiling glass walls frame the ancient boulder landscape in a way that makes you feel part of the Mojave rather than just looking at it. By day, light shifts across the rock formations – by night, the outdoor hot tub and fireplace pull you into the open desert sky. A glass studio perched among the boulders is ideal for quiet mornings, while the pool adds another reason to stay put. Joshua Tree National Park is a twenty-three-minute drive when you're ready to explore further.

Home truths

  • You'll need a car to get around –there's parking for up to four cars on the premises. Some roads near the home are unpaved and can develop ruts after rain, so factor that in if you're arriving in a low-clearance vehicle.

  • Note that neither unit has a conventional oven – both kitchens are fitted with modern cooktops and a toaster oven instead. If you're planning elaborate roast dinners, it's worth adjusting your meal plans accordingly.

  • If you're travelling with little ones, your host can provide a high chair on request.
