Built by Norwegian textile artist Benedicte Lux and HEQU Studio, this townhouse in Mérida's historic centro is as much a maker's statement as a place to stay. Chukum – the ancient Mayan hydraulic lime plaster used in cenotes for centuries – covers the walls, the floors, and the chemical-free courtyard pool, maintained by a biological filtration system complete with fish. Handwoven, naturally dyed Supernaturae textiles fill every room, and the entrance serves as a working showroom. The courtyard is the heart of it all – shaded, lush, and cool. Plaza Grande is a twenty-two-minute walk away.

Home truths
The street-facing entrance sits on a traditional Mérida calle with natural stone walkways – some surfaces are uneven, which is consistent with the character of the historic centro. Worth keeping in mind if you have any mobility considerations.
The natural pool is chemical-free and looks and feels quite different from a conventional swimming pool. Sunscreen isn't permitted in the water, so you'll want to rinse off before taking a dip – and yes, there really are fish in there.
