Paris, France

It’s well-known that Paris is the most romantic city in the entire world. Nicknamed the City of Love for a reason, iconic sites such as the Eiffel Tower or the galleries of the Louvre provide beautiful backdrops to your hand-in-hand strolls around the city. To escape the crowds, it’s worth visiting lesser-known sites like Musee de la Vie Romantique, a museum dedicated specifically to 19th-century romantics. Make sure to visit the Wall of Love, a must-see for all couples visiting Paris. Located on the Montmartre Hill, end your visit at the top of the hill for some mesmerising, far-reaching views over the whole city.

A romantic trip to Paris is all about wandering the streets with your other half, getting lost in the narrow lanes and picturesque courtyards of the Latin Quarter or the Marais. To catch your breath, take a break at one of the city’s many cafes, the perfect spot for people-watching. Whether you enjoy a boat tour or a relaxing stroll along the bank, there’s no better place to watch the sunset than from the Seine. Come nightfall, enjoy a glass of wine at a rooftop bar and watch as the City of Lights lives up to its name.

St. Barts, Caribbean

With a reputation as the most picturesque and luxurious corner of the Caribbean, Saint Barthelemy is the perfect place to whisk your lover away. This island country offers white sandy beaches and sparkling turquoise waters, providing endless romantic walks. You’ll find plenty of coves and quiet spots to relax in. If you fancy it, there’s even the option to swim nude at select places - such as Saline Beach. We also think you’ll agree that there are few things more rustic and romantic than a windswept, historic lighthouse at sunset.

Steeped in tradition, the iconic Gustavia Lighthouse is a great lookout point offering unforgettable views of the island and surrounding ocean. An equally scenic way to enjoy the vibrant St. Barts sunset is to hire a yacht for a sunset cruise around the island. If all that sailing has made you hungry, you’ll be happy to hear that you’re spoiled for choice with numerous fine-dining restaurants dotted along the shores. With hardly any light pollution, take a post-meal stroll along the beach for a spot of stargazing, a romantic experience you won’t forget in a hurry. What better way to end the day in one of the most romantic places in the world?

Lake Como, Italy

Set in the foothills of the Italian Alps, it doesn’t get any more romantic than Lake Como. Italy’s third largest lake is home to charming villages, lazy harbours, and cosy restaurants stretching along its shores. Surrounded by lush green hills, it’s impossible not to fall in love with (and in) Lake Como. The best way to soak in the views is by hiring a boat and spending a relaxed day on the water - just the two of you. You can even bring a picnic with you - Comacina Island or Teresio Olivelli Park are lovely spots for some al-fresco grub. Rather stay on dry land? Stroll down the scenic, flower-filled promenade in the picturesque town of Menaggio, being sure to stop for a treat or aperitif in the central square.

If you’re an outdoorsy couple looking for something a little more active, there are many hiking trails around (after all, we are on the doorstep of the Alps here). Wherever you choose to wander, make sure you visit the Acquafraggia Waterfalls - even Leonardo da Vinci was impressed by them. Come dusk, the best place to watch the sunset is Sighignola, nicknamed the Balcony of Italy. At 1,314 metres, the views from this mountain are beyond captivating. Our tip? Bring a bottle of wine - you’ll want to toast to such serene scenes. The romance continues well into the evening, with plenty of restaurants offering candle lit dinners with fine Italian cuisine right by the water.

Thanks to its colourful landscapes, picturesque attractions, and rich history, Kyoto is Japan at its most romantic. Step into another world at Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, one of Kyoto’s top sights - a lovely place for a hand-in-hand wander. Another great spot for a starry-eyed stroll is Kyoto Botanical Gardens, bursting with amazing colours in any season. If you happen to visit in spring, you can even enjoy a relaxing boat ride along the cherry blossom-lined Okazaki Canal. A must-visit for any couple is Jishu Shrine, the city’s most famous spot for successful relationships. Dedicated to love and matchmaking, test your match at the Love Stones - legend has it that successfully walking from one to the other with your eyes closed means your love will last forever. No pressure, then.

Kyoto has a fantastic arts and culture scene, and there are endless date ideas for culture vultures, including joining a pottery class, participating in a Japanese tea ceremony, or learning how to make sake. Foodie couples will also find plenty of things to do, like visiting Nishiki Market, the city’s 400 year old kitchen. It’s a treasure trove of treats and fresh produce, and a must-see for any food lover. Come nightfall, the romance really comes alive. Temples and shrines are illuminated, wooden streets dazzle with lanterns and, if you’re lucky, you may even spot a geisha in the Gion District.

Santorini, Greece

Of course, it wouldn’t be a list of the most romantic places in the world without mentioning Santorini. This Greek island is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations on the planet, and it’s not hard to see why. Its iconic whitewashed houses, blue-domed roofs, and the sparkling Aegean Sea are a treat to behold. Naturally, the first place you’ll want to go is the beach. Red Beach is the most renowned spot on the island, where you can relax on loungers against a backdrop of red volcanic rocks. To take things up a notch, why not admire the coastline from the luxury of a private cruise?

Back on the island, it’s worth exploring the towns and villages of Pyrgos and Fira, and getting happily lost in the maze of cobbled streets. It’s a great idea to rent a car (or better still, a scooter) and cruise along the winding roadways. It’s well worth hiking to the top of Santorini Volcano, but if you’re not feeling sporty, Akrotiri Lighthouse also offers fantastic views. Stoking those romantic flames, Santorini has some of the best sunsets in the world. While Oia is a favourite spot, you may want to escape the crowds and head to the clifftop village of Imerovigli instead. Enjoy a sundowner at the many sleek bars and enjoy views of the sun sinking behind the nearby island of Thirassia.

Marrakech, Morocco

With its tantalising colours, smells, sounds and sights that reawaken the senses, it’s no surprise that Marrakech is one of the most romantic places in the world. The city’s captivating souks sell everything from lamps to artwork, and are the perfect place to pick up a gift for your partner to remember this time together. There are several historic sites in the city, with Badi Palace being one of the most charming. Walk round the evocative ruins, and imagine how elegant the palace once was.

Marrakech can feel quite hectic at times, but fortunately there are a few particularly pretty gardens you and your other half can escape to. Admire the large shimmering pool at Menara Gardens, before strolling through the olive trees and resting under the shade. Alternatively, head to the heavenly Majorelle Gardens, packed with plants from around the world. Take a seat on one of the secluded benches and listen to the trickle of water fountains. At the end of the day, the perfect way to unwind is with a couple’s spa treatment. Although men and women bathe separately at public hammams, you can still find private spas which offer some pampering to enjoy together. Finish off at a rooftop terrace, and admire the Koutoubia Mosque silhouetted against the sunset.
