So, you’re taking a trip down to the Old South, with its historic cities and islands. Perhaps you’ll even stop in at Charleston, taking the time to amble along its cobbled lanes and explore the impressive gardens. The port city revels in its Southern charm, and is today known for a booming gastronomic culture. But after all the sightseeing is done and you’re filled to the brim with shrimp and grits, oyster roasts, frogmore stew and other local delicacies, it’s time to waddle on down to some of the beaches around the city and the rest of the region. With a subtropical climate, the area is home to all manner of marshlands, as well as pyramid-like sand dunes and glorious South Carolina beaches. And the latter is what we’ll be looking at today in a state packed with some of our finest homes. Here at Plum Guide, we pride ourselves on our standards, providing you with the very best homes and truly expert advice, so you don't have to worry about a thing when it comes to planning a holiday to remember.

Surfside Beach

Part of the Grand Strand sandy coastline that runs for 60 miles (100 kilometres) across the northern part of the state, Surfside Beach is a family-friendly hub, with a pier extending into the water, providing unforgettable views of the surroundings. Let the little ones win (for once) at mini golf, and take them to the water park in this entertaining beach area.

Kiawah Island

For something a little different, head out to this secluded island. It's made up of enchanting forests, towering sand dunes and elegant sandy beaches. Rummage through the Kiawah Beachwalker County Park for its public beach area (much of the island is private), and swim in the water at a beach with lifeguards and amenities. Embark on the nature trails and practice your swing on the pristine golf courses.

Huntington Beach State Park

Is it a park? Is it a beach? Well, yes and yes. It’s both. And if you like your history and nature, you’re in for a treat. This beach offers more than just sunbathing, with around 2,500 acres (1,000 hectares) of untamed (maybe a little bit tamed) terrain to discover. Bring your binoculars to spot the range of birds, and join anglers in the popular fishing spots. The sandy strand itself runs for around 3 miles (5 kilometres), with picnic sites and vistas to keep you entertained.

Folly Beach

If you’re looking to have a bit of a jolly or a folly, it’s time for Folly Beach in the southern suburbs of Charleston. Popular with the city’s inhabitants, this sandy stretch makes for an idyllic spot to watch the sunrise or sunset. As the sky begins to turn crimson, take refuge in one of the many bars lining the rear of the beach, and enjoy a few drinks with views of the water. Stroll out along the Folly Beach Pier for impressive views of the barrier island, and make use of the picnic areas for a nice lunch. Other highlights here include the Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve and the pelican rookery.

Edisto Beach

Another one for the families among you. If you absolutely must have the little ones with you on your trip to the South Carolina beaches (just kidding - we know you love them really), then the Edisto Beach is a great option. It stands a little way away from the crowds, beside the charming Palmetto Boulevard. Take in the views and lose yourself (not really) on the hiking trails of the Edisto Beach State Park.

Hilton Head

We’re going to end on another barrier island, in the form of Hilton Head. Stroll down the sandy shore of the Coligny Beach Park. Play tennis with friends and practice your swing on the golf course. Then, after all is said and done - and you’ve gotten the last of the day’s sand from the best South Carolina beaches out of your ears - it’s time to totally unwind in one of the spas on the islet.
