Watch the sunset in Oia

Picture an idyllic Greek island in your head. There’s a high chance you’ve conjured up the postcard-perfect sunset view from Santorini’s Oia village, looking out over cascading whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches. With this image in mind, hopefully it’s clear why the Oia sunset is a non-negotiable when it comes to things to do in Santorini for couples. The most popular spot from which to admire the sunset is by Oia Castle, but the inevitably huge crowds might not be conducive to the romantic atmosphere you’re after - instead, head to the Byzantine castle ruins, or take a seat on the rooftop terrace at Sunsets. To take your experience to the next level (and be sure of escaping the crowds), book onto a sunset sail, and experience the changing colours as evening falls from the comfort and privacy of a catamaran.

Find your bliss at a Santorini spa

Find both romance and relaxation at one of Santorini’s world-class spas. Zen-inducing treatments to enjoy with your other half include couple’s massages, saunas, steam rooms, hot stone massages, and facials, with some unique locations to boot. Among the unusual spa experiences to be had on Santorini include a raw honey or frangipani flower massage at Canaves, set inside a 17th-century wine store with a grotto-esque feel - the “Wine Elixir” rejuvenating treatment uses Santorini vine leaves. If you prefer your spa treatments to be a little closer to nature , book onto a sailing tour to discover Santorini’s natural hot springs and mud baths.

Indulge yourself by booking in for a wine tasting at Santorini’s most beautiful vineyards. Sipping wine with that special someone against a scenic backdrop of vines - what’s more romantic than that? The volcanic island has a 3,500-year winemaking history, with the most popular local varieties including Nykteri, Assyrtiko, and Vinsanto. If you only have time to visit one winery, make it the renowned Venetsanos. Offering both traditional Cycladic architecture and unforgettable views of the caldera from its terrace, Venetsanos focuses on Assyrtiko and Mandilaria grapes - plus, it also boasts a menu of cheeses and other Greek treats to accompany your wine tasting. Other top spots for sampling some local vino include the Argyros estate, Art Space Winery (where contemporary art is a welcome accompaniment), and Gavalas.

Nothing says romance like donning your walking boots. In all seriousness, we’d challenge any couple not to be enchanted by the spellbinding scenery of Santorini - and there’s nothing like experiencing it with the person you love the most. A short but rewarding hike takes you from the village of Imerovogli to the striking Skaros Rock - a rocky headland that was once home to majestic 13th-century castle, which was destroyed by an earthquake in the 1800s. As you ascend the steep, winding steps, expect extraordinary views out to the azure Aegean. On your way back, pay a visit to the charming Agios Georgios chapel.

We could hardly write a guide to things to do in Santorini for couples without providing a few recommendations for a dinner à deux, could we? Widely regarded as the island’s most romantic restaurant, Oia’s Ambrosia is a particularly popular choice among honeymooners, with its menu of elevated takes on traditional Greek cuisine matched only by the unparalleled caldera views from its terrace. Outside of Oia, we recommend the flavour-packed Mediterranean fare and extensive winelist at Argo in Thira, followed by a drink at Marinera or Franco’s Bar. For oysters (a well-known aphrodisiac) and other wonderfully fresh seafood, make a beeline for Katina or Ammoudi on Ammoudi Bay.

Catch a movie under the stars in Kamari

Serving local and visiting cinephiles since 1987, the Kamari open-air movie theatre is surely a strong contender for the title of “most romantic cinema”. Films are shown in English with Greek subtitles and generally run from May until October, when you can expect balmy temperatures and clear skies - perfect for stargazing. Either head here after an early dinner (doors open at 8.30pm for a 9.30pm start), or pack a picnic, best washed down with local wine or beer - or a cocktail from the bar, of course. Kamari occasionally hosts theatre performances and exhibitions too, so be sure to check out what’s on during your trip to Santorini.
