Situated to the west of the city centre, and leading down to the Douro river, Miragaia is a jumble of medieval streets. Like Ribeira, it has brightly coloured buildings and sweeping views over the water. But unlike the city’s main riverside hub, Miragaia is tucked away from the usual tourist trails. In the evenings its restaurant and bar scene thrives, but it’s generally calmer area, with a strong local population (though the streets do get more hectic around holiday times). Miragaia is a relatively short walk or public transport ride away from the central districts of Baixa and Batalha, but the streets here are very steep, which is an issue for those less able on the hills. All in all though, it’s a lovely place for some quiet time away, with the option still open of venturing into the traditional old town as much as you like.
