Lemon & Liquorice is enchanting, and the host, Maria Cristina, is even more so. She’s put so much care into the details, the upkeep, and the overall finish. The street below is well-trodden, so there’s some noise if you leave the windows open, but the reason it’s so busy is the location, next to the Pantheon.

Housed in a historic 1600s building, this apartment has charming, whitewashed beams, herringbone wood floors and plenty of natural light. It also means that the kitchen is really well equipped – it's easy enough to whip up a decent meal to be enjoyed as a group in the charming, light-filled dining room. There are a few signs of age on the walls and floor, but these don’t detract in any way from the overall environment. In fact, we think that's what makes this 17th-century home – take in the original features from the get-go. The understatement on display in this historic house allows some of the warm, textural elements of the design – like the exposed beam ceiling, tiled floors and concrete steps – to sing. Set within a stunning fifteenth-century building, the home is spread over three floors, accessible via a beautiful spiral staircase that eventually emerges in between the three bedrooms up on the second floor. The interior is a largely pared-back affair, with a definite nod to Scandinavian simplicity, but without veering into the impersonal. While the Tiber isn’t actually visible from the front door, but it’s only one street over, and the Castel Sant’Angelo is just a few minutes' walk on the other bank. Elsewhere, you're around five minutes from the ever-popular Piazza Navona and ten to the lively morning market in Campo de' Fiori.

Just a heads up, the street below can get noisy at times, so we recommend packing earplugs if you’re easily awoken.

It's a wonderfully historic building that backs onto a little square and housed renowned American expressionist painter Cy Twombly for a good part of his later life. Once inside, the apartment is simple and traditional but elegant. There are plenty of eye-catching original features on display, including the stunning exposed beam ceiling and open fireplace, It lacks the personal effects of a lived-in home, which will appeal to those who tend to find Roman apartments on the busy side, but your hosts made your comfort their number one priority – the beds (and linens in particular) feel very luxurious and make getting up in the morning that little bit trickier. Parchment Scrolls oozes classical Roman style. There’s a wonderful mix of antique elements, like the ceiling beams or the painted doors, and more modern fittings that give it a sense of balance. It’s also in a fantastic position, in the cobblestone lanes of Ponte, and right opposite the grand Church of San Biagio. All of these blessings manage to outweigh the only real problem, which is the second bathroom. It doesn’t have the best ventilation, and the shower is only 190cm high, but we think that it’s forgivable given the rest of the space.

Located on a picturesque cobbled street just off of Via dei Coronari – one of Rome’s most historic streets – this quiet apartment is full of character and history. From its beamed ceilings to the original carved stone cubby window in the master bedroom, the building’s past blends beautifully with modern comforts to create a comfortable, stylish stay. We love the main room’s frescoed lilies and the stone arches above the doorways. Our favourite feature, however, is the private terrace where a table and chairs invite alfresco breakfasts over espressos and sunset spritzes before a night out in one of the countless trattorias in your Navona neighbourhood. In Rome, there’s a tendency for hosts to put less effort into their interiors the more central their home is. The logic says that people will come anyway. And for the most part, they're right. However, this is absolutely not the case with this stunning apartment. It might be on one of the most beautiful streets in the city, but you can tell how much care your host, Giacomo, has put into the design – both from an aesthetic perspective and a practical one. These are small things, like choosing materials that are easy to maintain but keep a bit of character. The brick fireplace is probably the best example of this, but we're also big fans of the elegant simplicity of the minimalist, black kitchen. Step out onto the quaint cobbled street outside your home, and you'll find yourself within walking distance of many of Rome's headline sights. Head west over the River Tiber, and within fifteen minutes, you'll be gazing upon Vatican City, the awe-inspiring capital of Christianity. Closer to home, you're a mere five-minute walk from Piazza Navona. The picturesque square buzzes with activity at all hours of the day and night.

Just a few steps away from the hive of activity that is the Campo de’ Fiori square and its market lies Starry Eyes, a spread-out apartment with ample space for large groups of friends and friends. Brightly lit, the tall windows overlooking Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Piazza San Pantaleo let in plenty of light throughout the day and fill the space with fresh air. Step out onto the corner balcony as you sip your morning coffee and watch the world go by. We particularly love the antique dining table – be sure to share an Italian feast of dreams when it comes to mealtimes. Despite the home's central location, you'll find peace and quiet here, making it the perfect escape to return to after a day of pizza-fuelled sightseeing. Having said that, you won't have to venture far to discover the treasures of Rome – as you'll be stationed just 500 metres away from Piazza Navona and 600 metres away from the Pantheon.

If a central location is high on your list of priorities, then this apartment is a great option. It's situated in the heart of Rome's historic centre, with Piazza di Spagna, Trevi Fountain, and Villa Borghese just a short walk away. Plus, you'll find plenty of bus stops nearby, so hopping around the city is easy. The home is compact, and the bedroom lacks natural sunlight but the kitchen is well equipped for preparing light bites (if only a little small). Plus, you’re in Italy, so eating out will most definitely be on the cards. All in all, we think the apartment is a good fit for those in search of a central base to call home in between sightseeing ventures.

Sandwiched between Rome's iconic River Tiber and Piazza del Popolo, this stunning studio is an excellent place to base yourself to explore the best of the Eternal City. 

Beneath the exposed whitewashed beams, you'll find a contemporary crashpad with an emphasis on a clean finish. Not only is there plenty of storage lining the wall, but the doors open up to unveil a compact kitchenette that's ideal for preparing light bites in the morning.

Gaze out at the beautiful neighbourhood buildings from your bed before peeling back one more of those minimalist doors to reveal a natural stone shower room where you can preen and pamper to your heart's content.

Call the elevator and head down to street level, where you'll find yourself around a twenty-minute walk from the likes of the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. Alternatively, cross the river over into upmarket Prati, home to many well-known fashion brands. For a complete change of pace, pass the Piazza del Popolo and enter the beautiful Villa Borghese park. Here, you're free to wander through the pristine gardens or pay to enter Galleria Borghese, home to one of the largest private art collections in the world.
