Known for its beginner-friendly slopes and stunning Swiss Alps scenery, it's no surprise that Villars-sur-Ollon is a popular destination for families. Whether you're after excellent hiking in the summer, fantastic skiing in the winter or just a relaxing getaway in the mountains, there's something for everyone here, especially with the gondola a twelve-minute walk away, a free ski shuttle service and the restaurants and shops in town only six minutes by car.

This cosy chalet shows off the idyllic views in every direction and makes an ideal base for anyone exploring the region. You'll feel right at home in this rustic hideaway, with the open-hearth fireplace, squishy sofas and wooden panelling creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It's the perfect place to kick off your snow boots and unwind with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book.

Our favourite spot to soak up the sunshine (and the scenery) is the deck off the main bedroom. Enjoy a cup of coffee there in the morning before rustling up breakfast in the kitchen, then grab your skis and snowboards and hit the slopes. When your toes feel frosty and your muscles are sore, head back home to a roaring fire and some delicious cheese fondue around the oak dining table before snuggling up for a family movie night in the lounge.

You might have to pinch yourself when first looking out at the views from this Swiss chalet. Whether it's through the double-height windows or out from the private balcony, the Swiss mountains rise in all their glory. You can look forward to cheese-filled dinners, using the home's raclette grill and fondue set, and curling up by the towering feature fireplace – the vistas of the peaks will backdrop everything you do. Bedrooms are simple and on the bottom floor, ensuring a good night's sleep before taking the ski bus (600m from the home) or setting off on a hike. Moriarty's Place

Those who love the great outdoors will have similar feelings about this apartment in the Silvaplana region of Switzerland. It's about five minutes' walk from a ski lift, half that time to walking routes through a forest and just over half an hour in the car to a windsurfing school on the edge of Lake Silvaplana. However you choose to spend your time here, the home itself will have you well rested ahead of the following day's excursions. The wooden beams and vaulted ceilings feel quintessentially Swiss, as does the open-hearth fireplace in the living room for warming up cold fingers. In the same space, there's a door leading to a balcony, which, should the weather be on your side, is a lovely spot for breakfast, thanks in no small part to the spectacular mountain view.

When staying in this home in Zermatt you’ll be staying in the shadow of Mount Cervin, right in the heart of the Swiss Alps, with easy access to Matterhorn Ski Paradise with its fifty-seven ski lifts, seventy runs and views of the Matterhorn itself. This is ski country, pure and simple, and this cosy, eclectic home in the Alps will provide a warm welcome after long days on the slopes. Designed in a playful style with a lipstick-red kitchen and cowhide sofas, the home also features exposed wood beams, sloped ceilings and plenty of natural light. The bedrooms are kept simple and pared-back with blonde wood cladding and neutral tones. When it comes to your après-ski activities, you’ll be within walking distance of just about everything you could want including bars, restaurants, shops and supermarkets, and the chalet apartment complex also features ski storage, a sauna and a steam room – all must haves after a day of slaloming through the Swiss Alps, we’d say.

Access to the mountain runs is as close as the end of your skis from this recently renovated apartment. In fact, you’ll be centrally placed for everything during your stay, with the resort offering all the everyday things you’ll need, like supermarkets and restaurants as well as an energetic après-ski scene so you can keep riding the slope of adrenaline-filled fun into the evening. But sometimes you just want to cast off your ski goggles and relax, and that’s ok too. What this home provides in spades is comfort, cosiness and a place to chill out. Coming in shivering from a day on the slopes? You’ll warm through by the fire in no time. And when you're hankering for a view, you could take a sumptuous faux fur blanket out onto the balcony  – imagine clutching a steaming hot chocolate while you watch the light play on the Matterhorn Glacier. Splendid.

If you’re looking for the quintessential Swiss Alps ski experience, then look no further. In the centre of Vercorin, an idyllic resort at the foot of a mountain, this petite apartment is less than 100 metres from the slopes. In fact, it’s so close, that in the winter you can often ski right up to the building. With a compact but cosy living area and timber bunks for the kids, it’s ideal for a small family. You’ll have use of the resort’s impressive facilities, including the bistro, sauna, steam room, playroom, gaming room and spa. Carve up the slopes by day, with the most incredible views as your backdrop, and come back for a soak in the hot tub before that all important après-ski activity in the bar. Then gather your group in your snug apartment and get the fondue set – borrowed from the resort reception – bubbling. Or if all that hard work on the slopes means you’re not in the mood to cook, just wander down to the bistro and let the chefs look after you.
