This smart apartment is in the heart of Meiringen in Switzerland, close to the setting of Sherlock Holmes’ infamous (spoiler alert) fictional – and faked – death at the Reichenbach Falls. The town has taken to its mysterious connection well, building a Sherlock Holmes Museum in a picturesque former church that fans of the sleuth will want to pay a visit to. For those visiting the area hoping for more skiing than sleuthing, you're also in luck. The ski region of Meiringen-Hasliberg has a total of fourteen lifts and twenty ski runs and is a kilometre away, while further afield you’re within easy reach of Axalp, Schilthorn and Jungfrau. For summer stays, we recommend bringing your hiking boots – there are hiking paths within fifty metres of the apartment, and you’re surrounded by stunning scenery such as the Aare Gorge. The apartment itself, part of an aparthotel, offers a serene and comfortable place to retreat to after a day of activities, with mountain views from the living room and private balcony. For extra relaxation make use of the building's sauna, while the storage room is great for keeping your bikes and skis secure.

Known for its beginner-friendly slopes and stunning Swiss Alps scenery, it's no surprise that Villars-sur-Ollon is a popular destination for families. Whether you're after excellent hiking in the summer, fantastic skiing in the winter or just a relaxing getaway in the mountains, there's something for everyone here, especially with the gondola a twelve-minute walk away, a free ski shuttle service and the restaurants and shops in town only six minutes by car.

This cosy chalet shows off the idyllic views in every direction and makes an ideal base for anyone exploring the region. You'll feel right at home in this rustic hideaway, with the open-hearth fireplace, squishy sofas and wooden panelling creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It's the perfect place to kick off your snow boots and unwind with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book.

Our favourite spot to soak up the sunshine (and the scenery) is the deck off the main bedroom. Enjoy a cup of coffee there in the morning before rustling up breakfast in the kitchen, then grab your skis and snowboards and hit the slopes. When your toes feel frosty and your muscles are sore, head back home to a roaring fire and some delicious cheese fondue around the oak dining table before snuggling up for a family movie night in the lounge.

You might have to pinch yourself when first looking out at the views from this Swiss chalet. Whether it's through the double-height windows or out from the private balcony, the Swiss mountains rise in all their glory. You can look forward to cheese-filled dinners, using the home's raclette grill and fondue set, and curling up by the towering feature fireplace – the vistas of the peaks will backdrop everything you do. Bedrooms are simple and on the bottom floor, ensuring a good night's sleep before taking the ski bus (600m from the home) or setting off on a hike. There's only one deadline to adventures, and that's being back at the balcony for sunset over the snow-capped peaks.

Those who love the great outdoors will have similar feelings about this apartment in the Silvaplana region of Switzerland. It's about five minutes' walk from a ski lift, half that time to walking routes through a forest and just over half an hour in the car to a windsurfing school on the edge of Lake Silvaplana. However you choose to spend your time here, the home itself will have you well rested ahead of the following day's excursions. The wooden beams and vaulted ceilings feel quintessentially Swiss, as does the open-hearth fireplace in the living room for warming up cold fingers. When staying in this home in Zermatt you’ll be staying in the shadow of Mount Cervin, right in the heart of the Swiss Alps, with easy access to Matterhorn Ski Paradise with its fifty-seven ski lifts, seventy runs and views of the Matterhorn itself. This is ski country, pure and simple, and this cosy, eclectic home in the Alps will provide a warm welcome after long days on the slopes. Designed in a playful style with a lipstick-red kitchen and cowhide sofas, the home also features exposed wood beams, sloped ceilings and plenty of natural light. The bedrooms are kept simple and pared-back with blonde wood cladding and neutral tones.
