This smart apartment is in the heart of Meiringen in Switzerland, close to the setting of Sherlock Holmes’ infamous (spoiler alert) fictional – and faked – death at the Reichenbach Falls. The town has taken to its mysterious connection well, building a Sherlock Holmes Museum in a picturesque former church that fans of the sleuth will want to pay a visit to. For those visiting the area hoping for more skiing than sleuthing, you're also in luck. The ski region of Meiringen-Hasliberg has a total of fourteen lifts and twenty ski runs and is a kilometre away, while further afield you’re within easy reach of Axalp, Schilthorn and Jungfrau. For summer stays, we recommend bringing your hiking boots – there are hiking paths within fifty metres of the apartment, and you’re surrounded by stunning scenery such as the Aare Gorge. This cosy apartment is just 200 metres from the shores of Lake Como. It’s in peaceful Gravedona on the northern part of the lake, which you can easily explore by ferry. When you’re not sunbathing on the pebble beach or strolling around the quiet town, you’ll be grateful to have a relaxing space to call home. This apartment is rustic and charming, with an open-hearth fireplace and natural stone floors. There’s a convenient kitchen for keen home cooks – who fancies polenta?

This quiet hilltop apartment with mountain and river views from a private terrace is all about rest and reset. Set in a small village two kilometres outside Sorico, besides nearby hiking trails and a local park and bar, there's little else within walking distance. But for us, that's all part of the charm – and Lago di Como and Lago di Mezzola are just a short drive away when it's time to join the bustle. It's worth noting, at full occupancy, the last two guests will share a sofa bed in the lounge. While this won't suit everyone, it would work out great for a small family sharing.

Leonardo's Haven

If you're after a view, then you'll love this home in Dongo. Here, the beauty of the surrounding mountains accompanies a glimpse of Lake Como – if that's not an idyllic setting, we don't know what is. You can enjoy the scenery both indoors and out, whether you're cooling off in the private pool, nursing a glass of wine on the terrace, or unwinding in the contemporary living area. Just note that one guest will sleep on a sofa bed. When you're ready to explore, Menaggio is 13 kilometres away.

Lake Meets Mountains

Looking for a family-friendly apartment with knockout views? This home, on the northern side of Lake Como, should do nicely. Granted, the bedroom's interiors may feel pared back for some, but the main living space opening onto that lengthy private balcony makes up for that. The shared small garden downstairs with a barbecue and Boccia is a nice touch, too. Although only four kilometres from the shops, bakeries, gelateria, restaurants and pebble beach of Domaso, this apartment is on a steep hillside. We recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay.

The exterior of the block is wonderfully modern, almost leaning toward Brutalist ideals. Inside, things are cosy all year round. Wooden features, walls, and understated furnishings make this a fuss-free spot where you can hang up your hiking boots or skis and sip hot cocoa.

Of course being on such a vibrant resort, this home has its fair share of amenities, from winter sports, to mountain bike trails and canoeing for the outdoorsy types. And those of us looking for a little relaxation are also well catered for, with spas, saunas, boutique shops, and bars dotted around your locale.

As for location, you'll be about 3.5 kilometres from the lake and beach. Further afield, Menaggio and Como beckon for day trips – you'll want a car to make the most of the setting.

A modern, well laid-out space, the apartment has been specially designed to accommodate wheelchair users. Set on the ground floor, there’s a terrace to enjoy the mountain scenery from, and a large living and dining area that’s perfect for socialising after a day of adventure. The town itself is home to the Reichenbach Falls, where a certain fictional detective faked a fatal fall – which explains the Sherlock Holmes Museum nearby. Surrounded by mountains and stunning scenery, it’s not hard to see why Conan Doyle was drawn to write about this region. In the summer, you can hike from right outside your apartment, while in winter, the Meiringen-Hasilberg ski area is just a kilometre away.

Not So Elementary

This delightful wooden home sits a short walk from the shores of Lake Como, in the pretty town of Colico. It’s a fifteen minute walk to the Colico ferry pier where you can hop on a water taxi to beautiful lakeside town like Varenna and Bellagio. Or, head away from the lakeside to discover the area’s hiking trails into the mountains, past castle ruins and old mills.

The home has an eco-friendly vibe with solar panels on the roof and the facade of a clapboard cabin. Set in a wooden deck, even the swimming pool feels natural. Admire the mountains rising around you from the comfort of a sun lounger, or set up for long lazy lunches at the poolside table, shaded by a parasol. Inside, the lounge is flooded with sunlight from two walls of glass, and the reclaimed wood walls and floors continue the eco theme. There’s a mid-century feel to the dine-in kitchen and a second seating area is designed for teenagers and kids to hang out upstairs. Our favourite touch is the den, where a wooden bar and foosball table provide the fun and gym equipment the workout.

This well-appointed apartment serves up some beautiful views over Lake Como and the mountains beyond. It's a bright and functional space with sliding patio doors that opens up the home. The furnished terrace is a lovely spot for alfresco meals and Aperols in the sunshine. Downstairs, you'll also have free access to the shared swimming pool for cooling off. At capacity, two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the communal living area – though there are no curtains, so if you're hoping to enjoy a lie-in, you might want to pack an eye mask. It's also worth noting that it takes a short drive to reach the surrounding provinces.
