This new holiday complex in the village has been designed by Swiss architects and incorporates traditional Alpine design alongside modern features and amenities. Sloped ceilings and tall windows give living areas an even greater feeling of space, as well as a glimpse of mountain views. The interior design is current, with olive greens, modern prints and black monochrome foot stools. A long wooden dining table is great for getting together after days hiking, skiing or mountain biking. The kitchen is probably best suited to light meals, but if you do want something heartier, it's only a short walk to the centre of the village and its excellent choice of restaurants and bars.

This smart apartment is in the heart of Meiringen in Switzerland, close to the setting of Sherlock Holmes’ infamous (spoiler alert) fictional – and faked – death at the Reichenbach Falls. The town has taken to its mysterious connection well, building a Sherlock Holmes Museum in a picturesque former church that fans of the sleuth will want to pay a visit to. For those visiting the area hoping for more skiing than sleuthing, you're also in luck. The ski region of Meiringen-Hasliberg has a total of fourteen lifts and twenty ski runs and is a kilometre away, while further afield you’re within easy reach of Axalp, Schilthorn and Jungfrau. For summer stays, we recommend bringing your hiking boots – there are hiking paths within fifty metres of the apartment, and you’re surrounded by stunning scenery such as the Aare Gorge. Views of Lake Como don't come much better than this – and neither do penthouse locations. You're within walking distance of Fiumelatte for evening meals and the train station (just 300 metres away) for trips to nearby historic Varenna. Rather travel by boat? Hop on the ferry (a three-kilometre drive away) to glitzy Bellagio and beyond. Back home, the main bedroom suite, with its dressing area and Jacuzzi for two, more than delivers. However, it's worth noting that the headspace in the mezzanine second bedroom is low and better suited for children. But for those jaw-dropping views from the private terrace, we can forgive that.

After being occupied by the same family for five generations, this home lay uninhabited for several decades before it was treated to a complete renovation. Today, the thought that this remarkable home lay unappreciated for so long makes us slightly sad.

The views alone are worth a stay here. From the two terraces, you get a sensational panorama of Lake Como, the mountains surrounding the waters and some of the local area's spectacular buildings, like Villa Balbianello. With a pair of loungers and an alfresco dining table, you can pass hours upon hours with this backdrop for company.

Now that's what we call a view. Located in the charming town of Nesso, this apartment offers breathtaking views of Lake Como. You can admire the panoramas from the balcony, or watch the waves roll in while swimming in the shared pool. Vistas aside, the apartment is sleek and contemporary. There's a sofa bed for a third guest, but we think it would be a better fit for two. In terms of location, Como is twenty minutes away, making it an excellent starting point for exploring the region.

This apartment will be an irresistible option for those in search of impressive views of Lake Como. The central location is equally appealing – making it easy to walk to the nearest beach (Molo di sotto), set sail on boat trips and savour delicious Italian meals in local restaurants. Back at home, you can unwind on the little balcony or in the living room. At full occupancy, two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed, but this is a great option for families in search of simplicity and comfort.
