Once owned by an artist, there's a unique layout and a creative flair here that we loved when we visited. It's a blend of different styles, yet it works – vintage antiques mix with minimalist furniture, wooden countertops sit on stainless steel cabinets and, in the heart of it all, are the huge windows showing off the mammoth trees of Arkonaplatz Square across the street. On sunny days, enjoy your morning cup of coffee and breakfast roll on the balcony, watching as Berlin comes to life. Location-wise, you won't have to travel far to experience the authentic flea markets, buzzing restaurant scene and trendy galleries in this lively part of Mitte. Instead of walking to the main attractions, make like the locals and rent a bike from the cycle hire stations in the Kulturbrauerei or hop on the tram and be in the city centre in no time.

In an attractive Jugendstil building in trendy Prenzlauer Berg, there's fabulous architecture, art and culture all around. Inside, period features and quirky artistic touches make for a real experience, above and beyond your usual rentals. Cook your meals in the smart, modern kitchen and eat either in the charming little dining nook or out on the home's balcony. But it's not a problem if you don't feel like eating at home, with literally hundreds of restaurants within easy walking distance. In a quiet spot, but close to public transport, it's a breeze to explore the city from this little gem. Finish off the night with a drink from the minibar in the home's bedroom.

Located in the Alsace valley, this apartment is in a great spot to explore the local area. Though the home lacks a bit of thoughtful design, it’s a good base for a couple and has everything needed for a comfortable stay, such as a fully-equipped kitchen and washing facilities. Guests can also get competitive with a game of ping-pong in the shared space on the ground floor. The picturesque town of Colmar is just a short drive away or head to a nearby vineyard to sample some famous Alsace Rieslings.

On the first floor of an Alsatian house, this cosy apartment is ideal for exploring the region of Alsace and its famous wine route. You'll find yourself in a charming village between the hills of Bollenberg, Strangenberg and Zinnkoepflé. Sitting atop a modern building, Musical Genius flows over Friedrichshain and provides an unobstructed bird-eye view of the modern city. It’s minimalist in style, which only adds more character to the antique family heirlooms that are so well-maintained that it looks as if they were created yesterday. Every corner of this home tells a story as it’s packed with personal touches like the beautiful fashion sketches and artworks created by the host’s children. Musical Genius also comes complete with a harp and piano for you to use - and let’s not forget about the sauna.

Animalia is one of those homes that manages to tell a story. All the artworks are original pieces made by the host and his father, and the beautiful vintage-style cast iron chairs are sourced from his uncle’s bar. The space could be a bit tight for six guests, but it would be perfect for a family or a small group of friends coming to experience the city.

Bright and minimalist, it's a home with a spectacular view too. On the top floor and boasting not one but two spacious terraces, you can gaze across the rooftops and make the most of the evening sunshine in the summer months. The nearby church makes for an impressive backdrop and if you're hooked on views you can even visit it on a Sunday and climb its tall tower.

Inside, white walls and pine floors mix with sloping ceilings, plentiful house plants and little dashes of character, to make for a relaxing, stylish city home. You'll have a bedroom sleeping up to three and the living room easily converts into a second sleeping space – although you'd be sacrificing your indoor starting. Buzzing Arkonaplatz and its popular flea market is only a short walk from your door and this lovely part of the city is packed with great bars and restaurants.

An interesting fact about this apartment building is that the Berlin Wall would have run straight through when it was up. As such, it's a great location to see both sides of the city's history and you've got a great vantage point from the top floor balcony, which faces towards Mauerpark. Turning your back on the skyline for a moment, you'll be greeted by a bright and modern home full of fascinating curios — the intricately carved wooden bed in the master bedroom, for instance, came from a Buddhist Temple in Bali and there's abstract artwork hung on the walls that will have you stroking your chin. If it gives you the inspiration to go out and see an exhibition, Kulturbrauerei is only fifteen minutes' walk away. However, if you just want to flit between restaurants and bars, a five-minute stroll will take you to vibrant Zionskirchplatz and Kastanieenallee, two charming squares packed full of places to sit and watch the world go by.

At the exact point where Kreuzberg meets Neukölln, we find The Blue Angel. Kreuzkölln, as the locals call it, is a blend of multiple identities - there’s the multicultural atmosphere, the hipster bars, and a mix of both expensive abodes and rundown buildings. The Blue Angel embodies all of it with its high ceilings and original plaster details paired with contemporary photo prints and vintage furniture in the kitchen.

Set in a building from the 1900s, its history is celebrated by the light colour palette, gorgeous wooden floors and magnificent works of art. It’s easy to see that the host has an eye for design – most things are sourced from flea markets, with each piece of art and furniture telling a story. Located right on the border between Kreuzberg and Neukölln in a neighbourhood the locals call Kreuzkölln, this five-bedroom home is in a place where hipster coffee shops meet multicultural Berlin.

On the top floor of a beautiful 1900s building, we find Blonde Venus. We love its roomy terrace with views of Berlin, perfect for warm summer evenings - as well as its location in funky Kreuzkölln, which lies in the intersection of Kreuzberg and Neukölln. This three-bedroom home has a lot of charm, especially when it comes to all the intact characteristics that allude to the building’s past.

Inside a beautifully renovated 1920s building, we find Café Electric. It’s located at the exact point where Neukölln and Kreuzberg meet, a micro-neighbourhood that the locals call Kreuzkölln. Even though it’s a small space on paper, we don’t get that impression once we step into the luminous living room that feels a little like a tree house. It's complete with cosy sofas and a mix of unique art and design lamps, and it's also got a nice collection of board games that makes for a fun night in.

Touch of Warhol is a cosy flat nestled between Kreuzberg and Neukölln in a neighbourhood the locals call Kreuzkölln. It’s up-and-coming, so expect hipster-esque hotspots full of artsy Berliners mixed in with these rough edges. This three-bedroom home is perfect for the artistically inclined, especially if you appreciate pop artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. The building is from the early 1900s and it’s been lovingly renovated with modern amenities, old-school board games and charming details aplenty.

In true Kreuzberg fashion, the door to Orange Blossom is full of colourful graffiti. Inside, however, it’s a calm space filled with green plants, beautiful antiques and an extensive book collection. We fell in love with the Italian granite kitchen counter as soon as we saw it, and we adore how inviting and communal the kitchen is. Located in Wrangelkiez, you’re right across the street from Görlitzer Park, and you’re also within walking distance to some of Berlin’s hippest spots.

Hiromancy is like a treasure chest. Brimming with family heirlooms, quirky relics, and souvenirs, it's an unparalleled bohemian fantasy. Sonia owns a vintage fashion store, so it’s no wonder that it’s filled with vibrant, eclectic trinkets and greenery aplenty. It is small and it is located on the fourth floor with no elevator, but there’s nothing that can stop us from falling in love with this unconventional and quirky home that’s packed full of charisma.

Linderhof oozes character with a regal touch. Even though we can’t quite seem to nail down its style (it’s a mix of everything, Hollywood Regency elements, Baroque accents, Farmhouse Style cabinetry), we absolutely loved the high ceilings, stucco detailing, and the gorgeous granite countertop. Located in wonderful Schöneberg, it’s in a charismatic part of Berlin with lots to do around the corner.

Linderhof

Swanky in every way, Schwerin reminds us of German fairytale castles. While Schöneberg isn’t exactly located atop a hill with panoramic views of forests and mountains (like a real castle), it does offer a lot in terms of local Berlin restaurants and shops. We love the high ceilings, stucco details and luxurious materials, perfect for channelling your inner regal self.

Marienburg taps into something that feels very majestic. The over-the-top style isn’t for everyone, but if you want to feel a little regal, this three-bedroom home is for you. A swanky mix of Hollywood Regency and rustic styles, it’s the kind of place that makes you think of German fairytale castles. Schöneberg is full of things to do, especially when it comes to local restaurants and shops.

Marienburg

Show and Tell is one of those homes that’s brimming with charisma. From the high ceilings to the vintage mid-century furniture and Moroccan style tiles, small treasures are hiding around every corner waiting to be found. A family home to the bone, it also houses a piano (great for playing cheery tunes) and a stylish children’s bedroom with bunk beds. Moments away from Volkspark Friedrichshain, you’re in an attractive part of Berlin that’s full of soul.

Located in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, Creative Writing perfectly summarises Berlin’s vibrant spirit. The little balcony opens up to a beautiful residential street, allowing you to unwind while soaking up some of the special neighbourhood feel. We love all the posters (including The New Yorker covers in the bathroom), as well as the impressive collection of houseplants. While it feels and looks very young, anyone would like this home, especially if you’re keen to live in one of the city’s most charming neighbourhoods.

There are so many interesting aspects to this home, it’s hard to choose which to focus on. The building itself is clad with burnt wood and dark blue metal panels – there to reflect the site’s former space observatory. All the surfaces within the building are raw and honest, such as the exposed concrete, which shows the scars of construction. Sadly, this studio apartment is small, and the concrete columns within make it even more cramped. Nonetheless, this home is ideally located close to some of Berlin’s best attractions, such as the Jewish Museum and the Martin-Gropius-Bau. 

Relax, Take it Easy

The Big Easy is managed by the architecture company that designed the entire building, as well as the living units. This studio apartment is decked out with custom-made furniture, exposed concrete walls, and industrial flooring, to create an artistic loft-like space. We love the floor-to-ceiling windows and the private balcony is an added bonus. Overall, the minimalist approach might not appeal to all, but if you’re looking for a balance between home comforts and hotel-like luxuries, this is a great spot for you.
