As expected for an 18th-century Copenhagen home, the layout of this large and oh-so-stylish studio is a little kooky. One bedroom with a handy desk nook is tucked into the eaves on a mezzanine, so it's not the most private of spaces. The living area, which houses a sofa bed for two guests, forms part of the main bedroom. And while the balcony is a bonus, it's pocket-sized. But you can't quibble with the location. Set slap bang in the middle of Indre By, you're within walking distance of all the city's must-sees. Get off to a flying start at the shopping mecca of Strøget – it's right outside your door. Just note that this is a central, noisy area – light sleepers may want to pack earplugs.

If you’re searching for classic Scandinavian design in a fantastic location, this apartment delivers. Located on the third floor of a historic building without a lift, there is plenty of space for a group of nine to relax after a day of exploring. It’s worth noting there is only one bathroom here, but it's ideal for remote workers with dedicated desk space and families will appreciate the children’s amenities available for an additional fee. From here, it’s just a short stroll to the bars and restaurants of Nyhavn, while shops and historic sights are also within walking distance.

You're right in the thick of things at this smart downtown apartment, perched along Copenhagen's shopping mecca of Strøget. The metro is just 100 metres from your door, though we doubt you'll need it with buzzy Nyhavn Harbour and countless happening restaurants and cosy cafes within walking distance. It's worth noting if four of you share, the last two guests will have to make do with the sofa bed in the living space. You'll also need to prepare for some street noise from time to time. There’s no place like home… Until you’ve stayed in Master of Light that is. Casual luxury at its finest, it’s Copenhagen at its best. The location is extraordinary – you’re right besides Nyhavn, the city’s most famous postcard motif. And we can’t get over the design. Alexander clearly has a passion for Danish design, with works by Bang & Olufsen and Hans J. Wegner adorning every corner. There’s also a fantastic rooftop terrace with a nine-person hot tub, sun beds and a lounge arrangement, plus fantastic views of Copenhagen's historic buildings.

Locations really don’t get much better than this. It's rare to find a property this close by to the picture-perfect Nyhavn district, with its brightly coloured gabled townhouses. Find a sunny spot outside at a quayside café or hop on a boat for one of the many canal tours that start here. As the evening draws in, take a pre-dinner stroll along the waterfront, then duck into one of the many restaurants and bars that line the canal.  You could call in on the Queen too, she lives just around the corner. And when it’s finally time to retreat inside, you’ll find a contemporary place that invites you to be social. The communal area is the heart of the home, offering plenty of space for your tribe to hang out, cook, and eat. The industrial-style windows flood natural light through the apartment by day, while the plush velvet curtains allow privacy at night when it’s time for some shut-eye.

When it's time to explore the city, you won't have to travel far to take in Copenhagen's best sites. The cobbled Kongens Nytorv square is barely a five-minute walk away, and from here Nyhavn's colourful waterfront is another short hop. A bohemian atmosphere meets Japanese zen in this striking home. We particularly love all the original features including the wooden beams, exposed brick walls (and even the creaky floors), which mix beautifully with the hosts’ collection of books and vintage furniture. Since the apartment was renovated in 2013, it has been featured in several lifestyle magazines for its charming design aesthetic. Spread across three floors, unique quirks include the rather rustic ladders that take you up to the second and third floors. Curl up in a cosy corner with a book in hand and live the scene of what seems like it could be a fictional dream. Alongside world literature, the host also supplies guests with access to gym equipment, should you wish to keep up with your fitness routine while visiting Copenhagen. Around the apartment, the immediate area feels very local – the Christianshavn canals are just two minutes away, and so are plenty of restaurants. All in all, it's safe to say that this home is perfectly out of the ordinary.

This city-centre apartment is seriously chic – we absolutely loved its minimalist Scandi vibes. The communal area is open and bright, offering plenty of space for all six guests to hang out together. There are thoughtful touches like vintage illustrated posters hanging on the wall above comfortable furniture from New Scandinavian Design maestros, Bolia. The glass-walled bedrooms are definitely a novel touch and create a strong impact. They certainly won't be to everyone's taste, but all have velvet curtains to pull across for some privacy when needed. With views onto Copenhagen's main shopping street, Strøget, you couldn't be better placed to hit the luxury boutiques and independent shops when the mood takes you. Plus, you're not far from the colourful waterside bars and restaurants of Nyhavn or the high culture of the Royal Danish Theatre – a little over a five-minute walk away.

Silver Bear

Centrally located and chicly styled, this apartment ticks all of our boxes. You'll be based in lively Indre By, just a short walk from Nyhavn's colourful harbour and Strøget's many shops. But even better than the location is the private roof terrace back home. It's the perfect spot to enjoy a Danish beer and admire the city views. Indoors, the pared-back interiors feature natural elements and lots of light. The kitchen isn't the biggest and there is some adult-themed artwork, but otherwise, it's a cosy option in the heart of the city.

A Viking Hideaway

This Copenhagen bolthole may be pocket-sized, but it would work well for two friends or colleagues looking for a central base to lay their heads. There's little space for socialising, with no living room to speak of. But each bedroom has a cushy chair and the dining banquette in the compact kitchen is a cosy spot for breakfast, and the bakery nearby will keep the pastries flowing. Outside, Nyhavn's buzzy cafes and restaurants are just around the corner. Kongens Nytorv Metro Station is also within easy reach, ready for you to blaze a trail across the city.

The Close-Up is on the small side, but it’s got lots of cool decorative elements, striking colour combinations, and sleek white floors. Located in a quiet backyard to a street packed with beautiful classicist and Rococo architecture, this studio home’s revamped interiors feel like a modern hideaway in a historic part of Copenhagen. The kitchen is basic and not suitable for cooking elaborate meals, but who says you even have to cook when you’re close to gems like Bistro Royal, Geist and Havfruen.

Ideally located and only two minutes from Amalienborg Palace, this stylish and immaculate home with plenty of space. With four bedrooms, two living spaces and an open-plan kitchen/dining area, large groups will be very comfortable here. The glass-walled bedrooms might leave you feeling a little exposed, but they are a cool design feature that adds a unique feel. As well as being close to the Queen's winter residence, you're also only a five-minute walk from the iconic canalside district of Nyhavn. It's the perfect place to while away a long summer's evening. Either with a cold one on the quayside like the locals or at one of the many restaurants overlooking the old tall ships.

This truly unique home is set over three floors with high ceilings, exposed beams and classically Danish design elements throughout. First built in 1755, it's been transformed into an incredible space that perfectly suits modern living. Brilliantly located in an area buzzing with activity, the building helps to block any noise from the outside world – providing you with the best of both worlds. You enter the home through a little courtyard to find the first couple of floors taken up by well-appointed bedrooms with soothing neutral colour palettes that help you drift off at the end of the day. However, it's the open-plan top floor that is the undoubted star of the show. It's an ideal space for socialising as you hang out by the kitchen counter and relax in the chillout area before sitting down for dinner at the large, ten-seater dining table. And if you'd like to treat yourself to a meal out, you've got too many options to mention within a short walk. Plus, with Amalienborg Palace and Nyhavn just around the corner, you won't have to go far to experience the best of Copenhagen. 

Timber House

The Magic Flute is rich in history. Located just off lively Nyhavn, the building dates all the way back to 1658 (there’s a plaque at the entrance detailing all the owners throughout the years). With crooked, creaky floors, it’s oozing old charm – and paired with Matilde’s artwork, instruments, and personality, it becomes one of a kind. She’s an opera singer and works just down the road in the Royal Opera House, which only makes this home even more special.

The Magic Flute

Conveniently located in the heart of Copenhagen, footsteps from Nyhavn’s charming waterfront, this apartment is the perfect place to crash after a busy day exploring Denmark’s capital. Bars and restaurants are on the doorstep, so you may want to bring earplugs if you’re hoping for a lie-in. Inside, while there isn’t a huge amount of space for socialising, especially when the sofa bed is in use, the bedrooms are comfortable, and the kitchen is equipped for longer stays.

The apartment offers a small kitchenette for preparing light bites and a double sofa bed that adds flexibility for larger groups, though keep in mind that wardrobe space is limited – we recommend packing light.

This home has gone all-in on the bold and clean design aesthetic. While it might feel a bit sparse to those who prefer personal touches, the Danes don't mess about when it comes to clean lines and functionality. It's seriously central, making it an excellent base for exploring the city on foot. Whether you choose to spend all day sightseeing or sampling delicious food at one of Copenhagen’s many high-end restaurants, you’ll love coming home to your sleek apartment and enjoying a well-deserved glass of wine on the terrace before turning in for the night. Its enviable location on the top floor means that it offers enviable views over the area, but it's illuminated from both sides, providing you with plenty of natural light to enjoy throughout the day. Not that you'll be in much with the delights on your doorstep.

Made up of a collection of small islands, Christianshavn is best known for its cafe culture and canals lined with colourful boats. You're just 500m from the alternative hotspot of Freetown Christiania, while the super impressive Copenhagen Opera House is a couple of kilometres away (it's hard to imagine two more dramatically different cultural centres). Further north, Copenhagen Street Food is ten minutes by bike, where you can sample inventive international cuisine. For travellers interested in design, atmosphere and culture, it doesn't get much better than Christianshavn.

After a day spent exploring the area, head back home for dinner cooked in the well-equipped kitchen and a chance to put your feet up on the sofa. Then, when your eyes start to get heavy, take yourself off to the cosy bedroom for a fantastic night's sleep.

Down the Golden Stairs

If you're looking for a Copenhagen bolthole that delivers on both style and location, this Indre By apartment should do nicely. While there is heaps of space for everyone to spill out in the free-flowing living areas, the stylish yet compact bedrooms may be a let-down for some. Prepare for some waiting around in the mornings, too, with only one bathroom. Although with a light-filled dining area for lazy breakfasts, what's the big rush? Set in a lively area of Indre By, expect some street noise. But that's all par for the course for a home this central.

Tucked back from the hustle and bustle of the ever-popular harbourside hotspot of Nyhavn, this spectacular apartment ranks among our favourites in the city. 

A large open-plan living area is the focal point of any stay here, with a sleek handleless kitchen, a typically stylish mid-century dining table and chairs, plus a comfortable seating area. It's lined with windows along one side, letting in plenty of natural light during the day. When night falls, elegant pendant lights illuminate the space.

Stride out into the picturesque pocket of the city. This 17th-century canal, lined with colourful houses and stunning sailboats, continuously tops lists of Copenhagen's must-see sights, and it's easy to see why. But, while it may attract the tourists, there's no doubt that the locals love it just as much, and you'd be hard-pushed to find a better spot in the city to enjoy a cold beer on a warm summer's afternoon.

To the east, a bridge connects you to the cafes and canals of Christianshavn and the hippie haven of Christiania, where quirky self-built homes line the lake. While to the west lie Copenhagen's pedestrianised shopping streets and the low-key creative cool of Kødbyen, also known as the Meatpacking District, a ten-minute bike ride away.

Adorned with beautiful wooden beams and gorgeous windows reminiscent of its warehouse past, Out of the Woods is a very special home. For what it lacks in luxuriousness, it makes up for with its charming location – Christianshavn is a unique part of Copenhagen with local restaurants, bars and endless canals. To some, it might be a disadvantage that the bedrooms don’t have any curtains, but who could say no to enjoying the breathtaking views of the rows of colourful houses and picture-perfect Church of our Saviour at any time of the day?

Located in the back building of a courtyard close to vibrant Nyhavn, this unique apartment channels old Copenhagen in a light-hearted way. We love this place – it's quirky, quiet, and crooked (it's in a typical timber-framed building with brick walls and low ceilings). Your host, Mikkel, is a music-lover, so there's an abundance of instruments, sound equipment and a huge record collection, as well as cool design classics by Hans J. Wegner – one of Denmark's most creative furniture designers. We also couldn't take our eyes off the lion foot bathtub, elegantly paired with a surfboard for a playful touch – though the tub is for decoration purposes only. Step out into Copenhagen's charming streets, and you'll find yourself just a few hundred metres from the colourful waterside bars and restaurants of Nyhavn. Stroll a few minutes further and you can browse the boutiques that line pedestrianised Strøget. Finally, head away from the centre, and the world-famous Little Mermaid statue is around twenty minutes' walk away. Alternatively, do as the locals do and cycle around the city to cut your journey times in half.

New Nordic is one of those homes that are just so effortlessly sophisticated. As soon as we stepped foot here, we were sold. The amalgamation of well-curated art and industrial-style furniture in a repurposed 1700s shell with lots of charisma makes it a very special place. Even though you’re right in the heart of Copenhagen, it feels like a tranquil haven with lots of space for contemplation. You also can’t go wrong with the charming views of traditional yellow timber-framed houses and copper-clad roofs.

Even though The Lana is largely minimalist, it’s got plenty of charm with intimate sloped ceilings, bursts of funky colour, and artsy decorations. The bright orange two-seater adds joie de vivre, and we also love the impressive collection of royal blue Arne Jacobsen Ant chairs. This one-bedroom home is right in the centre of Copenhagen, so if you’re looking to be bang in the middle of everything, The Lana could be the one for you.

On the third floor of a beautiful 1870s building, we find Opera Diva. It has expressive interiors with a mix of Scandinavian chic furniture and antique pieces that are paired with some of the host’s own illustrations. And it also comes with a bathtub, which is something we rarely see in Copenhagen. As as an added bonus, one of the most famous Danish opera singers lives next door – and even though she’s retired, you can still hear her practising her singing now and then.
