What we love most, however, are the impressive grounds. Enjoy an afternoon dip in the pool, play a game of table tennis, or use a mountain bike and explore the trails leading into the Catalan countryside. La Torre de Claramunt is a sleepy village just a fifty-minute drive from bustling Barcelona. Home to an 11th-century castle and plenty of Catalan charm, those wanting a break from city life will enjoy wandering the old-world alleys with local restaurants, bars and bakeries. It's also where you'll find this characterful apartment, set on the grounds of an illustrious estate, bordering on one side to the medieval city centre and on the other side to the green valley. The former home of the Marques de Gironella, it's said he built this home in 1900 to rival his elder brother's castle across the way – no wonder the views at the Castell are so good.

What we love most about this cosy flat is its heritage. It used to be the chapel, and you can feel that history in everything from antique furniture to the sky-high beamed ceilings. But it's not all ancient appeal here – there's a sleek bathroom, a glossy kitchen fit for rustling up tapas and underfloor heating powered by solar panels to keep frosty toes at bay. There's no air conditioning here, but due to the home's high ceilings and excellent isolation, the apartment stays cool in summer, and there are fans too, so you'll scarcely miss it.

Start your morning with an espresso on the sunny patio before strolling among the gardens – you can splash in the shared pool filled with natural spring water, play a game of table tennis, chess or checkers in the Spanish sunshine or use a mountain bike and cycle the unspoiled routes right on the grounds. As you would hope given the beautiful weather enjoyed around these parts, there are plenty of outdoor amenities. We're willing to bet the first one that grabs your attention is the invitingly blue swimming pool, overlooked by towering trees and loungers in the shade. Just away from this soothing scene, you'll find a few covered terraces, one with a stone barbecue and an alfresco dining table.

If you get a little restless after too much time spent horizontal, you'll be pleased to see that the villa has its own clay tennis court, neighboured by a pelota court that can double up as space to play volleyball. As if that wasn't enough, there's also a gym indoors.

The interior offers plenty of ways to relax as well. The design is a modern take on Mediterranean rustic style, with white walls, wooden ceiling beams and tiled flooring making for a cooling place to escape the sunshine for a while. Barcelona and the former fishing village of Sitges take just under an hour to reach in the car, while there are prehistoric caves, nature reserves and a salt mountain in the local area. The nearest town is Manresa, only a quarter of an hour away in the car.

Once a vineyard, the garden is now home to a stunning octagonal swimming pool, reminiscent of a Moorish plunge pool, a ping pong table, outdoor dining with a barbecue, and a wrap-around terrace overlooking the endless fields and forests. The view here is particularly breathtaking at sunset. Inside, the ancient stone walls are adorned with unique pieces by local artists and shelves show off trinkets from around the globe. The kitchen retains its old farmhouse charm, but shining chrome appliances give away the 21st-century make-over. A collection of outbuildings are now home to covered outdoor dining with the rustic simplicity of a monk’s refectory, and an old storeroom has been converted into a plush home cinema with velvet seats and perfect acoustics. Bedrooms feel hotel-grade luxurious, but what we really love are the retained old flourishes of the former farmhouse – stone tables for grinding corn, stone barrel rooms now holding bedrooms and a master bedroom in the old kitchen, still with its striking ancient hearth. Breakfast is also included every day.
