Sitting in the countryside between Málaga and Marbella, this typically Andalusian home is just the spot for a peaceful getaway during which you'll spend as many hours as possible in the great outdoors.

Part of the alfresco appeal is the dramatic landscape of hillsides and clouds rolling across the sky that greets you as you step out the back door. It makes for a lovely backdrop against which to paddle in the swimming pool, soak up the sunshine on one of the loungers or read on the shady pergola. Once nighttime starts to descend, you can fire up the barbecue and dine on the covered terrace.

Back inside, there are a fair few period features to be spotted, from the exposed brick fireplace in the corner of the living room to the vaulted wooden ceiling beams. However, these are matched with plenty of contemporary flourishes, too – the large windows bring in copious amounts of natural light, for example, while the sleek kitchen and bathrooms feel anything but dated.

When you're in need of shops and restaurants, the centre of Villafranco de Guadalhorce is only 2km away and Alhaurin el Grande is 7km away, too. A little further afield, there are sandy beaches at Fuengirola and Torremolinos, which are both around 30km away, too.

Deep within the Andalucian mountains, this petit villa is a retreat surrounded by big scenery. Gaze at the Sierra Nevada mountains in the distance from the comfort of a sun lounger. Plunge into the turquoise water, swim and few laps and repeat. A built-in brick barbecue with a prep area provides the outdoor cooking station, and lunch can be served on the shaded terrace. 

Despite the traditional exterior, with its white walls and terracotta roof, the inside feels clean and modern. The solid wood door opens up to an open kitchen, living and dining room in muted tones of lightwood and grey. So, from the cook in the kitchen to the kids lounging on the big, L-shaped sofa, everyone can easily spend time together. A set of bunk beds in the second bedroom lets you know this place is family-friendly.

In terms of location, you’re surrounded by peace and quiet. The charming Andalucian town of Cartama is a 6km drive away and hopping on the highway sees you at the historic city of Malaga – the birthplace of Picasso and home to a honey-hued winding old centre.

Seclusion is the watchword here at this honey-brown stone villa surrounded by greenery. It sits in the Sierra de Mijas foothills, where verdant green mountains rise up beyond the towering palms. With olive groves on one side and family plots dotting the hillside, it’s a place of tranquillity. But the area isn’t entirely wild, with the Lauro Golf Course just next door and a twenty-minute drive to the buzzing city of Malaga.

In keeping with the natural surroundings, this home is environmentally conscious too, powered by solar panels. Outside, you can spend sunny days by the swimming pool which has been set up with a slide for the kids. Palm-frond umbrellas shade loungers on the lawn so grown-ups can keep an eye on the play area (with swings, a slide and a treehouse) without having to lift a finger. Plus, there’s a covered outdoor kitchen for barbecues and the dining area is blissfully in the shade.

For chilly evenings, there’s a fireplace in the open-plan living area. We love the wood-beamed ceilings which go nicely with the country-style kitchen. On the ground floor, one of the bedrooms suites has a foosball table and a TV area for hanging out late at night.

Surrounded by lush vegetation and with a crystal-clear private pool for those hot days, this beautiful villa not only has attractive mountain and valley views, but it makes rest and relaxation a pretty alluring prospect. Can you see yourself here, giving in to the tranquillity by simply enjoying a cup of coffee on the balcony? Can you imagine yourself floating in the pool, gazing up at the bright blue sky, or napping in the sunlounger? Enjoy drinks and nibbles out on the terrace after a barbecued lunch, but not before a morning on the tennis court.
