We're utterly in love with this reimagined farmhouse-style property located just outside of the idyllic old fishing village of Esposende. Inside, the traditional features may not be to everyone's taste, but if you ask us, the outside area is by far the home's biggest draw. From the dining terrace to the private swimming pool and garden, you'll have ample space to bask in the Portuguese sunshine and remote setting. A car is a necessity here, but the charming towns of Ponte de Lima and Viana do Castelo are both a short drive away. 

The Vivaldi's Song

With sea views from your balcony, this modern villa in Galicia has all the desired features of a relaxed beach holiday. The house is perfect for a group of couples or friends looking to pass days by the pool and in the gardens. The beach is ten minutes away by foot and the gem of Sanxenxo village, one of the most chosen destinations of Galician locals, is even closer. It’s a short distance to the powdery sands of Praia de Afife, the border between Spain’s Galicia, the adventure-packed rivers of the Rio Lima estuary and the countryside hiking trails in the Lima valley.

Inside, the space is dominated by an expansive, wooden-beamed living area where you’ll find an elegant dining table for sharing bacalhau fish stew dinners and a contemporary lounge boasting ambient lighting for cosy nights in sharing aperitifs. The sleek kitchen has plenty of prep space, courtesy of a glossy island, which keeps the space social. A second dining room leads off the kitchen and out onto the patio – we’ll be honest, this one’s our favourite – perfect for alfresco dinners together under pink-hued sunsets.

Staying outside, there are plenty of spaces for every member to unwind. The patio is decked out with lounge chairs, perfect for soaking up the sun before plunging into the pristine pool for a cooling dip. We have to say we think the garden is the ideal spot to begin mornings over fresh coffee and locally bought pastéis de nata and to end evenings with caipirinha cocktails under the starlit sky. 

Soul of Afife 

Situated near one of Portugal’s oldest towns, this home offers peace and tranquillity. There are plenty of grounds to explore, including a pond (our favourite area), mature woodland and numerous paths leading into the countryside. Alternatively, simply unwind next to the private pool or admire the enchanting garden views from the veranda of the main house and the cottage.

This place is ideal for a large group of friends or family – there’s a charming separate cottage with a twin bedroom and kitchenette too, which provides a perfect space for those in search of a tad more privacy. If you love traditional interiors, then you’re in luck – from the grandfather clock in the dining room to the farmhouse-style kitchen and antique beds, this home is full of old-world character.

Nestled in a wonderful rural landscape, there’s plenty to see and do. Ponte de Lima, one of Portugal’s most historic towns, with its ornate squares, cobbled alleyways, and vast riverside Monday market, is just 13 kilometres away. The country’s only national park, the mountainous nature reserve of Peneda Geres National Park, is just a forty-minute drive away and offers prehistoric remains and walking trails, as well as golden eagles, deer and wolves – oh my.

Spend entire mornings simply soaking up the sun poolside and when it gets a bit hot, slip into the crystal clear waters for a lazy paddle. 

Indoors you’ll find a combination of rustic comfort and more modern touches. The small breakfast nook by the large kitchen window is another real highlight of the home  – sit there first thing in the morning sipping your coffee to a scenic backdrop. 

Enjoy family movie nights in the cinema or sneak away to the sauna for a bit of alone time. Dine alfresco on the balcony or socialise around the barbecue whilst the kids expend their energy running around the garden. 

Drive fifteen minutes to the historic town of Ponte de Lima where you can shop, top up supplies, eat at one of the local restaurants and wander the narrow streets until you find a bar servicing delicious vinho verde.

You’ll first notice the home’s traditional façade. Made up of three houses, two of which have long histories – the main house was a baker's, and the annexe, now a games room, was a distillery. Make use of the original bread and pizza oven for unforgettable meals, and whittle away evenings playing pool and drinking local wine. 

There’s plenty to keep you entertained here, but perhaps all you really want is to catch up on your book beside the pool. Let the hours drift by, breathing in the fresh country air while topping up your tan. Come dusk, the place to be is your balcony – nothing beats watching the sun dip into the sea. 

When it’s time to explore, you’re less than a mile from Afife and its beachy cafes, surf shops, seafood restaurants, and long stretch of sugary white sand. When you’re not catching waves or relaxing on the beach, hop on a hiking trail to one of the nearby waterfalls and discover the rugged mountain range.

Enjoy cooking for your group in the sleek marble kitchen, or alternatively, you can grill up alfresco meals on the barbecue outside. Sink into the squishy bean bag with your holiday read, soaking up the warm weather. Both bedrooms benefit from large glass doors opening onto the front decking, so you start each day with a spring in your step, ready to explore. 

When it's time to head out, you're fifteen minutes on foot from Caminha's sandy beaches and its old roman town, with excellent restaurants, cafes, bars, lively promenades and open-air esplanades around the Minho river's waterfront. If you're looking for more, catch the daily ferry boat out to the ruins of the fort of Ínsua in a matter of minutes, or drive to the beaches and historic town of Viana do Castelo, just 35 kilometres away.
