Perched on the edge of lake Aitjärvi, this house of logs is all about feeling relaxed and at one with nature. Of course, there is a TV and Wifi but we won't tell the kids if you don't. To make the most out of your stay we recommend taking your morning cuppa on the terrace while birds sing overhead, going for meandering walks in the woods and cooking all your meals on the fire pit (even though there's a perfectly good oven). In the colder months, those double-height windows are perfect for gawping at how beautiful everything looks blanketed in snow and, if you do venture out, remember there's a sauna to warm up in after. This no-frills cabin is pleasingly functional, which will no doubt appeal to anyone with kids in tow. And if that wasn't enough, the secluded location, rowing boat and endless fishing opportunities should clinch the deal.

Set a few meters from the lake, this spacious and comfortable home in the Finnish wilderness is the perfect place to reset and enjoy spending time with family and friends. You're only a short walk away from Kuortaneenjärvi lake, allowing you to relax every single day as you watch the glistening waters – we recommend making a homemade picnic to enjoy here as the children play on the swing set. You should at least once experience the sunset from this spot too – we promise that it'll make an amazing memory.

Whether you've been fly fishing over the river Juutuanjoki (a seven-minute drive away), hiking the Lemmenjoki national park (a twenty-six-minute drive), or taking in the breathtaking views over the sand beach right next to your home, any day is best bookmarked with a detox by the wood-burning sauna stove. Sparkling new and in what we think is a really special spot, this cabin has been built in the age-old style, overlooking the lake. Detached but set in a small, exclusive group of similar homes, they sit on the owner's private lakeside land and share a small sandy beach with a pier. So in the summertime, we're talking swimming, boating and fishing – all with the fabulous pine forest as a backdrop. But stay in winter for all sorts of snow sports – the ski slopes are a short drive away too.

All the traditional features are here, with a private sauna, a log burner and a loft room that's perfect for the kids, along with a terrace on the ground floor and a balcony upstairs, but there's a crisp, modern edge to everything. Perfect for active holidays, the owner can hire out bikes and kayaks and can even arrange horse riding.  

In the Glade

Only built in 2021, this log cabin by Lake Myllyjärvi is the stuff of dreams. One wall of the home has been constructed purely out of glass, so you can admire the vista while sitting around the dining table or getting toasty around the fireplace. Stepping out through the door will take you to the covered terrace complete with seating and a barbecue ready for bursts of warm weather and just beyond that is another seating area arranged around a fire pit. There's also a rowboat out here that guests can borrow to paddle on the lake. The real star of the show, however, is situated a few metres away from the main home. We all know that Finns love a sauna, but this cupola-style outhouse is taking it to the next level. As well as a wood-burner sauna stove, there's a dressing room, shower and kitchenette inside for the full spa experience. The nearest town for provisions is Padasjoki only fifteen minutes' drive away, but the larger city of Lahti — complete with the Sibelius Hall concert venue — takes just under an hour to reach by car.

Nestled in the woods, this home is the perfect place to forget about everyday life and immerse yourself in nature. It's located in the Northern Savonia region, known for its fresh, clean air and crystal clear lakes – if you need a reset, this is the place to do it. 

The wooden cabin has huge windows that bring the outside in, and the comfy sofa is the perfect place to curl up with a hot coffee. Watch the snow fall in the winter, or admire the light glinting through the trees in the summer months – this is a true sanctuary. When you get hungry, you can fire up the barbeque and grill up some salmon to enjoy on the terrace as you gaze out across Lake Kiltua. Your host can even arrange for a mobile hot tub, so you can enjoy an evening dip beneath the stars. And, perhaps best of all your furry friend can come along too – dogs are very welcome guests here. 

Although you could probably while away an eternity hardly moving from this serene spot, fans of the outdoors are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. Your host can help to arrange guided hunting, fishing, and trekking trips, and also rent out the required equipment. You can also take a rowing boat out onto the lake, or visit the nearby Jyrkänkoski ironworks – it's just over half a kilometre away. And, after a long day of exploring, you can do as the Finns do and soothe your muscles with a session in your very own sauna.

Those seeking an active holiday can enjoy hiking, fishing and berry picking nearby. Take the boat out onto the lake and soak up the sunshine, or for a bit more action, the owner can organise guided hunting, fishing and trekking trips. In the warmer months, wander over to Jyrkänkoski Ironworks and check out the museum, cafe and summer theatre or, for ultimate relaxation, rent a mobile hot tub and soak under the stars.

For a peaceful summer holiday in Kasnäs where you can totally switch off, this home is Finnish perfection. There's a few other cabins around, but you're largely remote living. Surrounded by nature, you're practically on the lake, and have all the comforts of a contemporary home. You might expect lakeside living to be rustic, but the slatted white walls mixed with moody dark furniture and sporadic plants give living here a Scandi-chic element. Start your days with coffee on the private porch against the crisp air, before heading to the communal wood heated sauna and lounge by the lake. You can rent a boat and explore the area on water, while the shared barbecue area is the perfect place to meet like-minded travellers and soak in the island atmosphere over some dinner. Then settle in for the night, snug in your lakeside home.

Cosied up in this chic, modern apartment, you’ll almost forget that you’re just a short walk from the pistes at Tahko resort. Right before you head out, enjoy a delicious meal with a cup of coffee in the dining area and step out to the balcony for a breath of fresh air and views of the snowy environs. At the resort, there’s also a spa centre, a sports hall and a range of restaurants. After some hours in the snow or a game of table tennis, swim in the heated pool or relax in the jacuzzi if you prefer, sample the á la carte menu at Kunkku for lunch and visit Pehkubaari in the evening for a serving of fondue. On those quiet nights when you just need to unwind, your sauna will be waiting for you when you get home.

Found in Vuokatti Ski Centre, this apartment is a lovely spot to return to after a day of tearing up the slopes. Not only is there a crackling fireplace in the living room next to which you can warm cold fingers, but there's also an electric sauna so you can fully embrace a Finnish tradition.

An added bonus comes in the shape of a balcony with forest views and some seating from which to enjoy this peaceful vista. You also appreciate this scenery rom the communal living space, which is full of comfy furnishings and some pretty jazzy curtains.

Interior design aside, there's a simple reason why people consider this address — the resort's slopes can be reached in a mere five minutes on foot, along with a pair of restaurants. In addition to skiing, the banks of Jäätiönlampi lake can be reached in six minutes' drive and the town of Kajaani is half an hour away.

Now, this is what you call a log cabin: a striking, sturdy wooden home, made from centuries-old Kelo wood. In case you’re wondering (we were), Kelo is an old, dried-out pine tree that’s shed its bark. It’s a natural antique, unique to the arctic region. And this home has it in double-height abundance. If it wasn’t for the wood, there’d be an echo inside the vast living space, but the rough edges and super-smooth panelling combine to give this home warmth. The wood burner and customary sauna help too, of course. There’s a generous covered porch for kicking off your kit after a day on the slopes, and a ski waxing room so you can prep for the next day. All told, it’s a fabulous family space inside a great big chunk of tree, conveniently located for the ski bus.

Sure, you could head out into the snowy expanse of Finnish Lapland to hunt for the Northern Lights. Or, you could lay back in your big double bed and watch as the Aurora Borealis put on a spellbinding display above you. This igloo-style cabin has a glass roof, so you can keep an eye on the sky all throughout the night. Or, perhaps get the sunken hot tub bubbling outside and keep warm as you scan the sky. During the day, you can gaze out of picture-frame windows at the dense pine forests around you. It’s a soothing medley of ink-black and pinewood inside, reflecting the calm of the forest outside, and we love the Japanese onsen-style bathroom with its own sauna. 

You’re in the heart of Lapland, where the snowy landscape is a winter wonderland in the colder months. Hopping on a snowmobile, you can reach the lift to the ski slopes of Levi in five minutes and there’s a supermarket nearby too. The Arcandia Arctic Amusement park is also just a ten-minute shoop by snowmobile.

Chancing across this cute-as-a-button log cabin in the depths of winter, you might feel like you’ve stumbled into a fairy-tale. Three extra beds in the balcony area give options for families and friends sharing an enchanting break, and there’s a sauna for the full Finnish experience. You’re within walking distance (20 minutes) of Levi Centre, so you can ditch the car if you’re happy to stay local. With ski slopes, snowmobile tracks and cross-country ski trails galore, we don’t see why you’d want to go anywhere else.

Step out into the covered seating area to watch the snowfall drop gracefully on the ground, with a hot chocolate to keep you warm.  Get your skis at the ready and head to the Vuokatti ski slopes and enjoy the scenery as you glide down the crisp snow.

Not only is skiing offered, but a short walk away is an adventure park and swimming spots – if you can withstand the cold for a refreshing plunge that is. During the warmer months, head out for a delightful hike, with many nearby routes to explore. After a day in the great outdoors, appreciate a soothing session in the sauna before retiring to the Skandi bedroom for a restful night's sleep.
