If you're looking for an instant way to slow down and reconnect with life outside of a screen, you've come to the right cabin. Perched on the edge of lake Aitjärvi, this house of logs is all about feeling relaxed and at one with nature. Of course, there is a TV and Wifi but we won't tell the kids if you don't. To make the most out of your stay we recommend taking your morning cuppa on the terrace while birds sing overhead, going for meandering walks in the woods and cooking all your meals on the fire pit (even though there's a perfectly good oven). In the colder months, those double-height windows are perfect for gawping at how beautiful everything looks blanketed in snow and, if you do venture out, remember there's a sauna to warm up in after. This no-frills cabin is pleasingly functional, which will no doubt appeal to anyone with kids in tow. And if that wasn't enough, the secluded location, rowing boat and endless fishing opportunities should clinch the deal.

Nestled in the woods, this home is the perfect place to forget about everyday life and immerse yourself in nature. It's located in the Northern Savonia region, known for its fresh, clean air and crystal clear lakes – if you need a reset, this is the place to do it. 

The wooden cabin has huge windows that bring the outside in, and the comfy sofa is the perfect place to curl up with a hot coffee. Watch the snow fall in the winter, or admire the light glinting through the trees in the summer months – this is a true sanctuary. When you get hungry, you can fire up the barbeque and grill up some salmon to enjoy on the terrace as you gaze out across Lake Kiltua. Perched on the edge of Lake Ähtärinjärvi, this log cabin is the perfect retreat in the Pohjanmaa region. With plenty of space, easy access to the water, and a soothing ambiance, it's the ideal place to kick back and relax between your adventures. 

The traditional wooden exterior gives way to a beautiful open-plan space that's great for socialising in style. Cook up some hearty fare in the kitchen while your guests stretch out beside the crackling fire and watch the snow falling outside. If the weather is warmer, you can fire up the grill and enjoy an alfresco meal on the terrace with the lake as a backdrop. And, should you want to fully embrace the Finnish way of life, there's even a sauna where you can sweat out your stresses and inhale the sweet scent of pinewood. 

Your host will provide a boat, so you can row out onto the shimmering lake, and there's a kid-friendly natural sand beach on the plot. Skiers can shred some powder at Valkealampi Ski Centre – it's just a 10km drive away from your front door. And, if you fancy hiking, riding, or cycling through the forests, then there are plenty of nearby trails that will lead you through these dramatic landscapes.

Only built in 2021, this log cabin by Lake Myllyjärvi is the stuff of dreams. One wall of the home has been constructed purely out of glass, so you can admire the vista while sitting around the dining table or getting toasty around the fireplace. Stepping out through the door will take you to the covered terrace complete with seating and a barbecue ready for bursts of warm weather and just beyond that is another seating area arranged around a fire pit. There's also a rowboat out here that guests can borrow to paddle on the lake. The real star of the show, however, is situated a few metres away from the main home. We all know that Finns love a sauna, but this cupola-style outhouse is taking it to the next level. As well as a wood-burner sauna stove, there's a dressing room, shower and kitchenette inside for the full spa experience. The nearest town for provisions is Padasjoki only fifteen minutes' drive away, but the larger city of Lahti — complete with the Sibelius Hall concert venue — takes just under an hour to reach by car.

During the winter months, the landscape around this cosy holiday home looks like something out of Narnia. Just minutes away from the piste, it's the ideal place to call home during a winter sports trip, and it makes an equally great base for vacations in the summer too. 

Step inside, and you'll instantly feel at peace thanks to the tranquil interior space, filled with natural wood and soothing shades. The open-plan setup makes it fantastic for socialising after a long day in the great outdoors – curl up on the sofa with a glass of wine, or get busy making some hearty dishes in the kitchen. Sparkling new and in what we think is a really special spot, this cabin has been built in the age-old style, overlooking the lake. Detached but set in a small, exclusive group of similar homes, they sit on the owner's private lakeside land and share a small sandy beach with a pier. So in the summertime, we're talking swimming, boating and fishing – all with the fabulous pine forest as a backdrop. But stay in winter for all sorts of snow sports – the ski slopes are a short drive away too.

All the traditional features are here, with a private sauna, a log burner and a loft room that's perfect for the kids, along with a terrace on the ground floor and a balcony upstairs, but there's a crisp, modern edge to everything. Perfect for active holidays, the owner can hire out bikes and kayaks and can even arrange horse riding.

This home in the Turku Archipelago is on Finland’s west coast, and is built in the traditional Finnish style. On a quiet residential road, you’ll have use of your own pier and rowing boat, with a larger beach just a short stroll down the street. In a peaceful part of the area close to the Swedish border, it’s in a great position for exploring the quieter town of Yllasjarvi, or the livelier resort of Iso-Ylläs. This cabin is ideal for a group of friends or families holidaying together. It’s all functional comfort and welcoming warmth, the multiple fireplaces adding extra snugness in the social spaces. There’s even a fireplace on the all-wood veranda outside. The cabin is dotted with little luxuries too. Every bedroom has its own bathroom and there’s a ski waxing room to ensure smooth gliding along the cross country trails in the area. It’s the private sauna that really tops it off for us. Throw some water on the löyly to really get the humidity going. Embrace the Finnish tradition and jump in the snow afterwards.

Found in Vuokatti Ski Centre, this apartment is a lovely spot to return to after a day of tearing up the slopes. Not only is there a crackling fireplace in the living room next to which you can warm cold fingers, but there's also an electric sauna so you can fully embrace a Finnish tradition.

An added bonus comes in the shape of a balcony with forest views and some seating from which to enjoy this peaceful vista. You also appreciate this scenery rom the communal living space, which is full of comfy furnishings and some pretty jazzy curtains.

Interior design aside, there's a simple reason why people consider this address — the resort's slopes can be reached in a mere five minutes on foot, along with a pair of restaurants. In addition to skiing, the banks of Jäätiönlampi lake can be reached in six minutes' drive and the town of Kajaani is half an hour away.

Located just thirteen minutes from Inari, this lodge in the sticks has everything you might need for a tranquil getaway from the hustle and bustle back home. We love the timber-heavy interiors, striking fire and sliding glass doors that offer views of the picturesque landscape all around – as if you'd need reminding. Stepping out the front door, there's a decked terrace that leads to your very own sauna for the ultimate rest and relaxation. Whether you've been fly fishing over the river Juutuanjoki (a seven-minute drive away), hiking the Lemmenjoki national park (a twenty-six-minute drive), or taking in the breathtaking views over the sand beach right next to your home, any day is best bookmarked with a detox by the wood-burning sauna stove. When we think of Lapland, we think of the Northern lights, lots of snow, and cute as a button wooden chalets. And this home isn't disappointing. While we can't make any promises about the aurora borealis, we can tell you that this wooden cabin is serving up some seriously homely vibes. Set near a lake - which is perfect for summertime dips - the plot is traditionally Scandinavian. Thick tree trunks have been used to create the walls, while further wood panelling separates the bedrooms. The combined living space has got an L-shaped sofa for nights snuggled in front of the fire. A small kitchen has got everything needed for lighter meals. For those hitting the slopes, there's a communal ski waxing room to prep your equipment. And of course, what lodge would be complete without its own sauna to sweat it out after a long day?

If we were constructing a home in such an idyllic location, we would have done the same thing as the person behind this log cabin on the edge of Lake Saimaa did and put as many windows in as humanly possible. When it comes to views, there's no bad seat in the cabin, which was only built in 2020 and comes packed with modern, monochromatic furnishings. However, it's possible to get closer still to the natural beauty out through the glass doors. Here, guests can choose between sitting on the covered terrace, lounging on the pier or taking a perch around the fire pit area. It's also outside where the separate sauna outhouse is found. Powered by a wood-burning stove and using water pumped from the lake, there's also a dressing room in here and another huge window gazing out to the tranquil waters. After a morning sweat, borrow the rowboat and take a paddle around the lake. Alternatively, drive twenty-five minutes to Ruokolahden Freeski Ky and tackle the slopes.

This igloo-style cabin has a glass roof, so you can keep an eye on the sky all throughout the night. Or, perhaps get the sunken hot tub bubbling outside and keep warm as you scan the sky. During the day, you can gaze out of picture-frame windows at the dense pine forests around you. It’s a soothing medley of ink-black and pinewood inside, reflecting the calm of the forest outside, and we love the Japanese onsen-style bathroom with its own sauna. 

You’re in the heart of Lapland, where the snowy landscape is a winter wonderland in the colder months. Hopping on a snowmobile, you can reach the lift to the ski slopes of Levi in five minutes and there’s a supermarket nearby too. The Arcandia Arctic Amusement park is also just a ten-minute shoop by snowmobile.

Lyra's Hideaway

Cute as a reindeer’s button nose, this log cabin sits in the Finnish wilderness. The shores of Lake Vanttausjärvi are 20 metres away where you can take a boat out in summer for a spot of fishing (a rowing boat and outboard are included with a stay here). But it’s winter when this place really comes into its own. A cosy classic cabin vibe awaits, as towering pines are laden with snow and the scenery is blissfully silent. You may even spot the Northern Lights above. As snow blankets the land, keep warm in the outdoor hot tub or with a session in the garden sauna. Then there’s the lakeside summer kitchen, which could be a misnomer as it’s heated and a delight to cook in during the winter months too. Perhaps grill some of your own freshly-caught fish in the wood fire here. 

Inside, this home has all the trappings of a traditional log cabin – antler candelabra, whitewashed log walls on display and a wood-burning stove at the heart of the home. A picture-frame window displays the snowy landscape proudly, particularly enjoyable when curled up with a cup of cocoa on the L-shaped sofa. A full kitchen provides everything you need for self-catering, and the closest shop is a ten-minute snowmobile ride (or even-minute drive) away in Vanttauskoski. 

Lappish Dream

Cosied up in this chic, modern apartment, you’ll almost forget that you’re just a short walk from the pistes at Tahko resort. Right before you head out, enjoy a delicious meal with a cup of coffee in the dining area and step out to the balcony for a breath of fresh air and views of the snowy environs. At the resort, there’s also a spa centre, a sports hall and a range of restaurants. After some hours in the snow or a game of table tennis, swim in the heated pool or relax in the jacuzzi if you prefer, sample the á la carte menu at Kunkku for lunch and visit Pehkubaari in the evening for a serving of fondue. On those quiet nights when you just need to unwind, your sauna will be waiting for you when you get home.

Crumb Cake

Summers rowing your boat on the lake and winters skiing at the nearby resort make this home a magnificent base for holidays no matter the season. For a peaceful summer holiday in Kasnäs where you can totally switch off, this home is Finnish perfection. There's a few other cabins around, but you're largely remote living. Surrounded by nature, you're practically on the lake, and have all the comforts of a contemporary home. You might expect lakeside living to be rustic, but the slatted white walls mixed with moody dark furniture and sporadic plants give living here a Scandi-chic element. Start your days with coffee on the private porch against the crisp air, before heading to the communal wood heated sauna and lounge by the lake. You can rent a boat and explore the area on water, while the shared barbecue area is the perfect place to meet like-minded travellers and soak in the island atmosphere over some dinner. This cosy apartment is in an Alpine-style stone house just 150m from the main slope, so during ski season you can pretty much rise and glide. Check the weather from your living room window — if it’s a whiteout, then swap the slopes for a pamper day at one of the nearby spas or catch a movie in the local cinema. In summer once the snow has melted, the twenty-four hours of sunshine illuminate the lush green fells, while shorter winter days are for sleigh rides, snowmobile safaris and hunting the Northern Lights. After a day packed with outdoor adventures, soothe tired muscles in your private sauna. When it’s time for apres-ski activities (whether you’ve actually hit the slopes or not), there’s a restaurant on the ground floor that plays live music — don’t worry, the apartment is well soundproofed. Once you’re warmed up, you can head next door to the karaoke bar to belt out a tune, although it might take some Dutch (or in this case, Finnish) courage. If a cosy night in is more your style, then why not gather around the dining table for a homecooked meal before sipping a nightcap on the glazed balcony with a view of the pine trees.

Lap It Up

Skiing in Finland is an experience all lovers of the slopes should enjoy at some point, with thick snow and fairytale forests. This mountain home is within walking distance of the excellent Masto runs, with views far across the rocky landscape. Within a striking modern building, it's stone and dark grey cladding is an imposing sight. Inside, you'll be wowed by its floor-to-ceiling windows, its double height main room and its stylish Scandi design features. Warm up around the fire, pull up a chair and read by the window, or treat yourself to time alone in the private sauna. If you're here for the skiing, it's practically on your doorstep, and there's lockable ski storage outside. Visit in the summer for a very different view, with lush green hills perfect for hiking.

Summit Lux

A lake right outside your home, views of the majestic surroundings, a sauna and an outdoor dining area with a barbecue grill sounds ideal to us. Boat rides on the water, pre-breakfast walks along the lakeside and afternoons on the pier with undisturbed hours of sunbathing is not a bad way to spend the day. Inside this typical wood-clad cabin you can cosy up on the sofa and watch TV while a fire crackles in the living room. There’s no forgetting the forest, even when you’re indoors, as a big bay window looks out into the trees. Unwind in the private sauna, and perhaps dunk into the lake to cool off after, proper Finnish style. The owner's farm next door has a farm shop for supplies and you can hire Shetland ponies for a fun day out with the kids.

Rauha

Now, this is what you call a log cabin: a striking, sturdy wooden home, made from centuries-old Kelo wood. In case you’re wondering (we were), Kelo is an old, dried-out pine tree that’s shed its bark. It’s a natural antique, unique to the arctic region. And this home has it in double-height abundance. If it wasn’t for the wood, there’d be an echo inside the vast living space, but the rough edges and super-smooth panelling combine to give this home warmth. The wood burner and customary sauna help too, of course. There’s a generous covered porch for kicking off your kit after a day on the slopes, and a ski waxing room so you can prep for the next day. All told, it’s a fabulous family space inside a great big chunk of tree, conveniently located for the ski bus. 

Silver Kelo

In Finland, going to the sauna has been elevated to a national pastime and this home provides the perfect opportunity for you to find out why. With your own outdoor hot tub and sauna inside, it’s the ultimate destination for some peace and pampering. Interiors are minimalist with flourishes of fur blankets and a cosy wood-burner, but then you don’t need much adornment when you’ve got windows opening up to those views over Lake Haukjärvi. Steps lead down to a little boat jetty out on the lake, for a spot of fishing or sunbathing, and there’s covered outdoor dining if you want to enjoy your catch of the day amidst the trees. Built in 1971 and still retaining some traditional, original features, this home has been recently renovated to create a cosy, compact cabin ideal for an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
