Perched on the edge of lake Aitjärvi, this house of logs is all about feeling relaxed and at one with nature. Of course, there is a TV and Wifi but we won't tell the kids if you don't. To make the most out of your stay we recommend taking your morning cuppa on the terrace while birds sing overhead, going for meandering walks in the woods and cooking all your meals on the fire pit (even though there's a perfectly good oven). In the colder months, those double-height windows are perfect for gawping at how beautiful everything looks blanketed in snow and, if you do venture out, remember there's a sauna to warm up in after. This no-frills cabin is pleasingly functional, which will no doubt appeal to anyone with kids in tow. And if that wasn't enough, the secluded location, rowing boat and endless fishing opportunities should clinch the deal.

Set a few meters from the lake, this spacious and comfortable home in the Finnish wilderness is the perfect place to reset and enjoy spending time with family and friends. This quiet, sun-filled spot is surrounded by nature, but you have everything you need in this contemporary cabin, including a full kitchen, ample dining room and a huge U-shaped sofa. It may be peaceful, but you certainly won't be bored. Younger children will love playing on the swings and the lakeside beach, while the older kids can get competitive with the badminton set. Our favourite place in this home is the cosy dining table by the floor-to-ceiling windows that offer you a lovely view of nature and the nearby lake – it's even fitted with lovely fairy lights that twinkle as you watch the amber glow of the sunset with your loved ones. Snuggle up in the hanging chair with a blanket as you delve into a brand new book, watching the local wildlife through the windows.

You're only a short walk away from Kuortaneenjärvi lake, allowing you to relax every single day as you watch the glistening waters – we recommend making a homemade picnic to enjoy here as the children play on the swing set. You should at least once experience the sunset from this spot too – we promise that it'll make an amazing memory.

If we were constructing a home in such an idyllic location, we would have done the same thing as the person behind this log cabin on the edge of Lake Saimaa did and put as many windows in as humanly possible. When it comes to views, there's no bad seat in the cabin, which was only built in 2020 and comes packed with modern, monochromatic furnishings. However, it's possible to get closer still to the natural beauty out through the glass doors. Here, guests can choose between sitting on the covered terrace, lounging on the pier or taking a perch around the fire pit area. It's also outside where the separate sauna outhouse is found. Powered by a wood-burning stove and using water pumped from the lake, there's also a dressing room in here and another huge window gazing out to the tranquil waters. After a morning sweat, borrow the rowboat and take a paddle around the lake. Alternatively, drive twenty-five minutes to Ruokolahden Freeski Ky and tackle the slopes.

Lakeside Lonkero

Nestled in the woods, this home is the perfect place to forget about everyday life and immerse yourself in nature. It's located in the Northern Savonia region, known for its fresh, clean air and crystal clear lakes – if you need a reset, this is the place to do it. 

The wooden cabin has huge windows that bring the outside in, and the comfy sofa is the perfect place to curl up with a hot coffee. Watch the snow fall in the winter, or admire the light glinting through the trees in the summer months – this is a true sanctuary. When you get hungry, you can fire up the barbeque and grill up some salmon to enjoy on the terrace as you gaze out across Lake Kiltua. Your host can even arrange for a mobile hot tub, so you can enjoy an evening dip beneath the stars. And, perhaps best of all your furry friend can come along too – dogs are very welcome guests here. 

Although you could probably while away an eternity hardly moving from this serene spot, fans of the outdoors are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. Your host can help to arrange guided hunting, fishing, and trekking trips, and also rent out the required equipment. You can also take a rowing boat out onto the lake, or visit the nearby Jyrkänkoski ironworks – it's just over half a kilometre away. And, after a long day of exploring, you can do as the Finns do and soothe your muscles with a session in your very own sauna.

During the winter months, the landscape around this cosy holiday home looks like something out of Narnia. Just minutes away from the piste, it's the ideal place to call home during a winter sports trip, and it makes an equally great base for vacations in the summer too.

Built on a rocky slope, where the still waters of Lake Kuorikkajärvi lap at the edge of the forest, this place scores highly on location alone. Inside, with high vaulted ceilings, a mezzanine loft room and a sleek modern kitchen, it's less of a cabin and more of a sophisticated lake house. The living space has huge windows to frame those perfect views, and an oversized sofa facing the fireplace for cosy evenings indoors. But if you're here in the summer months, the chances are you'll be here for the great outdoors. Barbecue on the home's deck, light one of the campfires overlooking the water, and gaze at the stars from the shore. You'll have your own jetty and a rowing boat, so you can spend days in or on the water. There's a typical lakeside cabin for your private use, with a wood-fired sauna, but you'll also have the option of the electric sauna inside the home. Come evening, we recommend sitting out on the terrace, sipping sundowners and watching the starry night sky twinkle overhead.

Only built in 2021, this log cabin by Lake Myllyjärvi is the stuff of dreams. One wall of the home has been constructed purely out of glass, so you can admire the vista while sitting around the dining table or getting toasty around the fireplace. Stepping out through the door will take you to the covered terrace complete with seating and a barbecue ready for bursts of warm weather and just beyond that is another seating area arranged around a fire pit. There's also a rowboat out here that guests can borrow to paddle on the lake. The real star of the show, however, is situated a few metres away from the main home. We all know that Finns love a sauna, but this cupola-style outhouse is taking it to the next level. As well as a wood-burner sauna stove, there's a dressing room, shower and kitchenette inside for the full spa experience. The nearest town for provisions is Padasjoki only fifteen minutes' drive away, but the larger city of Lahti — complete with the Sibelius Hall concert venue — takes just under an hour to reach by car.

Sparkling new and in what we think is a really special spot, this cabin has been built in the age-old style, overlooking the lake. Detached but set in a small, exclusive group of similar homes, they sit on the owner's private lakeside land and share a small sandy beach with a pier. So in the summertime, we're talking swimming, boating and fishing – all with the fabulous pine forest as a backdrop. But stay in winter for all sorts of snow sports – the ski slopes are a short drive away too.

All the traditional features are here, with a private sauna, a log burner and a loft room that's perfect for the kids, along with a terrace on the ground floor and a balcony upstairs, but there's a crisp, modern edge to everything. Perfect for active holidays, the owner can hire out bikes and kayaks and can even arrange horse riding.

When we think of Lapland, we think of the Northern lights, lots of snow, and cute as a button wooden chalets. And this home isn't disappointing. While we can't make any promises about the aurora borealis, we can tell you that this wooden cabin is serving up some seriously homely vibes. Set near a lake - which is perfect for summertime dips - the plot is traditionally Scandinavian. Thick tree trunks have been used to create the walls, while further wood panelling separates the bedrooms. The combined living space has got an L-shaped sofa for nights snuggled in front of the fire. A small kitchen has got everything needed for lighter meals. For those hitting the slopes, there's a communal ski waxing room to prep your equipment. And of course, what lodge would be complete without its own sauna to sweat it out after a long day?

For a peaceful summer holiday in Kasnäs where you can totally switch off, this home is Finnish perfection. There's a few other cabins around, but you're largely remote living. Surrounded by nature, you're practically on the lake, and have all the comforts of a contemporary home. You might expect lakeside living to be rustic, but the slatted white walls mixed with moody dark furniture and sporadic plants give living here a Scandi-chic element. Start your days with coffee on the private porch against the crisp air, before heading to the communal wood heated sauna and lounge by the lake. You can rent a boat and explore the area on water, while the shared barbecue area is the perfect place to meet like-minded travellers and soak in the island atmosphere over some dinner. Then settle in for the night, snug in your lakeside home.

This wood-built house takes cosiness to the next level, with the living room sporting a hardwood backdrop and a glimpse of khaki to provide a splash of colour, you'll feel perfectly at home. Step out into the covered seating area to watch the snowfall drop gracefully on the ground, with a hot chocolate to keep you warm.  Get your skis at the ready and head to the Vuokatti ski slopes and enjoy the scenery as you glide down the crisp snow.

Not only is skiing offered, but a short walk away is an adventure park and swimming spots – if you can withstand the cold for a refreshing plunge that is. During the warmer months, head out for a delightful hike, with many nearby routes to explore. After a day in the great outdoors, appreciate a soothing session in the sauna before retiring to the Skandi bedroom for a restful night's sleep.


The Wintry Moon

With its clean lines, monochrome interiors and pine tree views, this new cabin on Finland's Lake Oulujärvi is throwing out some seriously cool Scandi vibes. Set just metres from the water, the home is a peaceful retreat from the stresses of day-to-day life. The open-plan living space is perfect for groups to gather, whether it be on a modern rocking chair in front of the fire or at the sleek white dining table. In summer, lake swimming is the order of the day – there are even two rowing boats for exploring the bays. If you need to warm up, jump in the traditional lakeside sauna and sweat it out in true Finnish style. In colder months, a snowmobile and sleigh can be rented from the owner, though we won't blame you if you prefer to stay warm on one of the sofas, watching the snow fall through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Made of ancient silver logs, this home emerges from between the quiet trees of the forest landscape as if it’s always stood there. In a peaceful part of the area close to the Swedish border, it’s in a great position for exploring the quieter town of Yllasjarvi, or the livelier resort of Iso-Ylläs. This cabin is ideal for a group of friends or families holidaying together. It’s all functional comfort and welcoming warmth, the multiple fireplaces adding extra snugness in the social spaces. There’s even a fireplace on the all-wood veranda outside. The cabin is dotted with little luxuries too. Every bedroom has its own bathroom and there’s a ski waxing room to ensure smooth gliding along the cross country trails in the area. It’s the private sauna that really tops it off for us. Throw some water on the löyly to really get the humidity going. Embrace the Finnish tradition and jump in the snow afterwards.

Hidden behind a classic cabin exterior, this home is an unassuming gem just metres from the waters of Lake Inarijärvi. Timeless Finnish interior design forms a hassle-free and functional environment. Blanched wood walls – laminated on the outside for extra insulation – and stained-oak floors are illuminated by immense floor-to-ceiling windows in the living space, while the heathered grey sofa and sleek black furniture create a dramatic, contemporary contrast. In the daytime, when the weather’s fair, go foraging for cloudberry and mushrooms in the local area, or hire a boat for the afternoon. Spend the evening in your cabin’s lean-to, beside a roaring campfire, or, if you’re lucky, chasing the elusive Aurora Borealis. When it’s spectacularly cold, make use of the sauna before curling up in comfy beds beneath the rafters and drifting off to the gentle patter of snowfall.

Chancing across this cute-as-a-button log cabin in the depths of winter, you might feel like you’ve stumbled into a fairy-tale. With walls made of jumbo logs and a thick blanket of snow on the roof, it’s got magic written all over it. Inside it’s as cosy as can be, with an open fire, animal pelts and contemporary furniture that contrasts perfectly with the rustic architecture. Three extra beds in the balcony area give options for families and friends sharing an enchanting break, and there’s a sauna for the full Finnish experience. You’re within walking distance (20 minutes) of Levi Centre, so you can ditch the car if you’re happy to stay local. With ski slopes, snowmobile tracks and cross-country ski trails galore, we don’t see why you’d want to go anywhere else. 

Snow Kiss

Now, this is what you call a log cabin: a striking, sturdy wooden home, made from centuries-old Kelo wood. In case you’re wondering (we were), Kelo is an old, dried-out pine tree that’s shed its bark. It’s a natural antique, unique to the arctic region. And this home has it in double-height abundance. If it wasn’t for the wood, there’d be an echo inside the vast living space, but the rough edges and super-smooth panelling combine to give this home warmth. The wood burner and customary sauna help too, of course. There’s a generous covered porch for kicking off your kit after a day on the slopes, and a ski waxing room so you can prep for the next day. All told, it’s a fabulous family space inside a great big chunk of tree, conveniently located for the ski bus.
