In Finland, going to the sauna has been elevated to a national pastime and this home provides the perfect opportunity for you to find out why. With your own outdoor hot tub and sauna inside, it’s the ultimate destination for some peace and pampering. Interiors are minimalist with flourishes of fur blankets and a cosy wood-burner, but then you don’t need much adornment when you’ve got windows opening up to those views over Lake Haukjärvi. Steps lead down to a little boat jetty out on the lake, for a spot of fishing or sunbathing, and there’s covered outdoor dining if you want to enjoy your catch of the day amidst the trees. Built in 1971 and still retaining some traditional, original features, this home has been recently renovated to create a cosy, compact cabin ideal for an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. 


Full Steam Ahead

A lake right outside your home, views of the majestic surroundings, a sauna and an outdoor dining area with a barbecue grill sounds ideal to us. Boat rides on the water, pre-breakfast walks along the lakeside and afternoons on the pier with undisturbed hours of sunbathing is not a bad way to spend the day. Inside this typical wood-clad cabin you can cosy up on the sofa and watch TV while a fire crackles in the living room. There’s no forgetting the forest, even when you’re indoors, as a big bay window looks out into the trees. Unwind in the private sauna, and perhaps dunk into the lake to cool off after, proper Finnish style. The owner's farm next door has a farm shop for supplies and you can hire Shetland ponies for a fun day out with the kids.

If you're looking for an instant way to slow down and reconnect with life outside of a screen, you've come to the right cabin. Perched on the edge of lake Aitjärvi, this house of logs is all about feeling relaxed and at one with nature. Of course, there is a TV and Wifi but we won't tell the kids if you don't. To make the most out of your stay we recommend taking your morning cuppa on the terrace while birds sing overhead, going for meandering walks in the woods and cooking all your meals on the fire pit (even though there's a perfectly good oven). In the colder months, those double-height windows are perfect for gawping at how beautiful everything looks blanketed in snow and, if you do venture out, remember there's a sauna to warm up in after. This no-frills cabin is pleasingly functional, which will no doubt appeal to anyone with kids in tow. And if that wasn't enough, the secluded location, rowing boat and endless fishing opportunities should clinch the deal.

If we were constructing a home in such an idyllic location, we would have done the same thing as the person behind this log cabin on the edge of Lake Saimaa did and put as many windows in as humanly possible. When it comes to views, there's no bad seat in the cabin, which was only built in 2020 and comes packed with modern, monochromatic furnishings. However, it's possible to get closer still to the natural beauty out through the glass doors. Here, guests can choose between sitting on the covered terrace, lounging on the pier or taking a perch around the fire pit area. It's also outside where the separate sauna outhouse is found. Powered by a wood-burning stove and using water pumped from the lake, there's also a dressing room in here and another huge window gazing out to the tranquil waters. After a morning sweat, borrow the rowboat and take a paddle around the lake. Alternatively, drive twenty-five minutes to Ruokolahden Freeski Ky and tackle the slopes.

As far as Finnish log cabins go, this one is pretty monumental – and an out-and-out winner if you’re looking for a holiday hideaway for an extended family, or hoping to share with friends. The separate lakeside sauna house is perfectly placed for indulging in some Finnish sauna traditions. A short dash down the wooden steps and you can plunge into the cool blue of Lake Päijänne. If you prefer to be on the water, rather than in it, hop into the little rowing boat for a bit of bobbing along. The lofty wooden home is only a little further up the bank, with a year-round hot tub just outside, and another sauna inside. There’s a generous wooden verandah from where you can survey the pretty lake views through the spindly, silvery pine trees. Out here, there’s space to enjoy the long evenings or starry skies and a gas barbecue to ensure you don’t go hungry. Inside, the double-height living space is grand but cosy, with floor-to-ceiling honey-coloured pine and a warming wood burner. Cook up a family feast in the in the generously sized kitchen after a day exploring the Päijänne National Park, hiking the Pulkkilanharju nature trail or cruising the inland waterways.

There's no better place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life than this charming log cabin surrounded by towering Finnish pine trees on the banks of Lake Päijänne. Though the setting couldn't be more rustic, the interior is all about contemporary comforts. The glossy kitchen is completely modern and well-equipped for preparing family meals, best enjoyed around the large dining table, while the living area offers plenty of cosy seating to curl up on, a flat-screen TV to keep you entertained and a crackling fireplace that's ideal for chilly evenings. Even when you're inside you can make the most of the scenery, thanks to the huge windows showcasing the woodland views. Spend your days in the great outdoors – go for a dip in the lake, take the rowboat out for a spin, do a spot of birdwatching from the expansive deck or explore the nature trails and interlinked islands at Päijänne National Park. When your feet are sore, relax in the private Finnish sauna or take a soak in the hot tub, which you can rent all year round.

At first glance, this might seem like a charming, rustic wood cabin in a stunning lakeside setting – which it is. But head inside for a pleasingly unexpected vibe. We’re talking lavish interiors so polished and trendy you’ll think you stepped onto an Elle Decor shoot, but with added ‘hygge’. For every cool, white leather armchair there is a cosy rug to sink your toes into. For every insta-worthy light fitting, there is a candlestick or a huge open fireplace. The newly fitted kitchen comes fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. 

Take a glass of wine out to the front terrace and soak in the wood-fired outdoor bathtub, with lake Saimaa by your side – utter bliss. When you’re not gallivanting around the lake in your boat (included with the cabin), settle into the sauna. Then fire up the gas barbecue and grill a fish caught that day. This is as remote as they come, so make sure you stock up on supplies before you arrive. Then simply enjoy the peace and serenity.

This beautiful barn-like home is perched on the edge of the forest, facing the scenic Ilmajärvi Lake. Relax on your own private terrace while gazing out at the water, and brave yourself to go for a dip. Walk out along your own wooden pier and dangle your legs into the water. Let the kids frolic on the swings and in the sandbox in the garden, before heading off for a family trek through the woods. In the cooler months, sweat it out in the sauna, or simply sit by the rustic fireplace in the living room to warm up. The wooden interior makes for a traditional country setting, with elegant furnishings. Cook up a meal in the modern, white kitchen, before retiring to the cosy and warm bedrooms.

Its serene yet rustic interior, complete with wooden floors and ceilings, is reflective of this home’s remote woodland location and yet perfectly suited to modern living. A large open-plan sitting and dining area, outdoor terrace and private sauna make this home both a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life and a comfortable place to entertain or relax.  

If entertaining from home is your bag, this home’s fully equipped kitchen means you can rustle up meals for friends or family in no time. Begin the day with coffee and a cinnamon bun at the breakfast bar. Come lunchtime try your hand at whipping up a creamy salmon or pea soup to accompany your rye bread and cheese and feasting alfresco on the terrace. In the evening you’ll want to make use of the outdoor gas grill and ensure you’ve got a post sauna sundowner in hand before cosying up on the sofa in front of the fire for movie night.

If you feel like venturing out, make the most of your home’s incredible location close to a spa, golf course, fitness track and tennis court. There are also many skiing, cycling and orienteering routes in the vicinity while the nearby Vierumaki Sport Institute offers access to an ice rink and sports hall.

If you’re looking for a wholesome escape, this is it. A lakeside cabin, so immersed in nature, you’ll return home with a renewed spring in your step. While away the days on the terrace loungers with your loved ones. Grill a fish on the barbecue, freshly caught that day in the lake that sparkles in front of you. Perhaps throw in some mushrooms that you foraged nearby that morning. This stuff is great for the soul. Indoors, expect ‘woodland cabin’ vibes with added polish. Beneath the high, wood panelled ceilings, a modern kitchen is stocked with everything you need. Throw some wood into the log burner and sink your toes into a fluffy rug after a day of exploring. Or head out to the sauna before cooling off in the lake for an evening swim. During the day, when not making use of the complimentary rowing boat or exploring the area, head to nearby Heinola for its shops and cafes. Or don’t. It’s very easy to stay put here and be at one with nature.
