This home is part of a gorgeous 17th-century château that has been brought bang up to date with monochrome, textured furnishings and oh-so-modern open-plan bathrooms. Beautiful as they are, though, the biggest draw is the lush wooded estate with a private hot tub right on the lawn. You’ve also got use of the on-site tennis courts if you wish to host your own Roland Garros. What’s more, you’re in the middle of wine country here, with some of France’s finest reds coming from the nearby monastery of Bourgueil – unusual for a region more known for its dry whites.

Overlooking the Loire river and sitting in the heart of Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park, this home's spot on the map is perfect for those in thrall to the French countryside and the large plant-filled garden – almost as large as the house itself – gives you plenty of space and seating to bask in this picturesque scenery.

There's something equally charming about the home's interior, with a range of design influences on display, from rustic wooden ceiling beams and the period fireplace to bursts of bold floral wallpaper and mid-century-inspired furnishings. Given the small guest count, the kitchen is perhaps more generously sized than you might have anticipated and finished off with pretty tiles, too.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the bucolic region, there are ample wine estates and castles to discover, as well as two characterful towns that are easily reached by car. The nearest, Saumur, is the French capital of horses with exhibits and equestrian shows to catch, while Angers is slightly further away and is renowned for its medieval architecture and cultural institutions.

Converted from a fourteenth-century nunnery in a village near the historic town of Poitiers, The Priory Tower is surrounded by valleys, ponds, and woods in all directions. It’s a quiet area, with a peace disturbed only by the occasional church bells, or birdsong. The local markets around here are overflowing with produce (this part of France remains an agricultural centre), and if you want to get away from civilisation, there are all manner of trails, lakes and rivers to explore. As a home, The Priory Tower feels like a part of France that got left in the past, away from the bustle and stress of modern life, and that’s quite a special feeling.

This home in Saint-Jean-du-Bois caught our eye after it was recommended by a member of the Plum Guide community. An elegant country chateau, it's perfectly plonked in the heart of the Loire Valley, with Le Mans just a twenty-minute drive away. Here you'll feel like nobility the moment you pull up in the drive. Sat in an eye-wateringly huge 450-acre estate, this place has impressive features by the boatload. Speaking of boats, you can fish or row round the lake, or hop on one of the bikes provided to peruse the countryside, challenge someone to a game of tennis, or dive into the beautiful heated pool. Inside, the home is a super-stylish mix of stripped-back country chic and lux modern design. Each of the nine bedrooms is decorated to a theme, and there are roll-top baths to be found in some of the luxury bathrooms. This is one to savour with family, friends and a few glasses of local wine.

In a rural village in one of the sunniest regions of France, tucked next to a historic church lies a medieval priory, converted from a Manor house in the fourteenth century to a truly magical home. The interiors are the highest quality and feel both historic and luxurious, while outside picturesque gardens are surrounded by an original stone wall. The pool looks out over unbeatable vistas of the surrounding hills. The host can even arrange al fresco evening meals on the terrace, if that should take your fancy. There's also an abundance of walks on and around the property to uncover, as well as multiple local vineyards, historic villages and countryside visits well within reach.

When we think of elegant countryside living in France, this partially moated 15th-century manoir, set in the centre of 52 acres of stunning parkland and fields, is what we dream of. Spend idyllic days splashing around in the private pool or roaming around the gorgeous grounds. As you'd expect from such a stately home, the interiors are impressive. Think delightful antiques, custom sofas and chairs, Persian carpets, exquisite Chinese porcelains and beautiful oil paintings. We lover the flowers in every room. Found on over 9 hectares of woodland, this 19th-century chateau is your chance to live out your personal fairytale. Start with breakfast in the cave-like, dining room before a long walk in the garden. As you’re out, find a spot for a picnic and pour yourself a cup of coffee from the thermos to enjoy your macaroons with. 

Spend sunny days poolside with the towering, fairytale spire of the chateau in the background. Out here, coincidentally, is where we’d recommend the perfect family photograph. Play table tennis on the lawn or get the group together for a few rounds of croquet. There’s also a pool table if anyone is up for a friendly competition. 

Though the home has been modernised, a lot of the original charm remains. Explore it as you wander from room to room, admiring the chandeliers and ornate furnishings. Sprawl out in the living room and spend hours simply socialising over freshly-baked pastries. 

Host parties in the exclusive cocktail lounge for a bit of glitz and glamour and move outside to stargaze before retiring to the opulent bedrooms. 
The town of Langeais is only minutes away – stroll alongside the Loire River, grab a bite to eat, sit down to admire the peaceful pace and simply appreciate the quiet, fine things in life.

This 35-acre estate in the Loire Valley is straight out of a fairytale and the perfect backdrop for a wedding or large celebration with family and friends. Restored to retain its old world charm, the chateau masters the art de vivre. The grounds are grandiose, with fields that slope down to your own river access. Drift lazily by canoe to the nearby town for some local produce. On return, read a book in the shade of a three hundred year old tree, play a round of badminton, and cool off in one of two swimming pools. Enjoy catered meals by candlelight on the grounds or in the barn. This is the ideal romantic setting to celebrate something budding or something bloomed.

Set on two hectares of private recreational land, this home is perfect for activity-seeking friends and families, with a newly re-done tennis court, pool and games room all available for your own private use. We loved the original stone fireplace - with logs provided for use throughout the year - and the wood burners in multiple rooms, making this as appealing in the winter as it is in summer, when the lavender, roses and lilies are in in full bloom. The nearest village is 4km away, and the closest town - Chinon - is 12km away, so you'll want a car to get to them.

Sitting within twenty-five acres of verdant grounds in the Vienne region, the manicured lawns and towering turrets of this mighty nineteenth-century chateau look like a real fairytale fantasy.

This impression doesn't change when you go behind the front door. There's a grand total of four reception rooms on the ground floor, all treated to high ceilings, framed artwork and antique furnishings. The dining room is similarly grand, as is the hallway complete with a grand piano.

Out among the vast grounds, there are rose gardens and shady hideaways to discover, as well as a large swimming pool, loungers and a barbecue for when guests have worked up a hunger.

The local area is perfectly peaceful as it is, but there are plenty of local attractions nearby, too. Lencloître is the nearest town, only six minutes' drive away, and has a few restaurants and shops with which to get acquainted. There are also Roman ruins, Abbeys and even larger chateaux to explore in the surrounding Loire Valley, too.

Turreted and dripping with ivy, this French castle is a fairytale come to life. Parts of this chateau date back to the 15th and 16th centuries and it sits on a hilltop – once a vantage point for medieval skirmishes and now a pretty look-out over the famous river Creuse. Ten acres of grounds surround the castle, home to a swimming pool fed by quirky frog fountains and loungers on the vast lawns. Exploring your private gardens, you’ll find woodland walks, a river running through the bottom of the garden and a tennis court shared with the owner secluded away.

Stepping inside is like stepping back in time. The old stone hearth takes pride of place in the main lounge and tiled floors hark back to a slightly more modern period of Victoriana. Glowing candelabra illuminate the living and dining room, where there’s a banquet-sized table for the whole group. The kitchen feels provincial, just what you want on a French countryside retreat. When it comes to hitting the hay, bedrooms are vast with original fireaplces on display. Some come with deep, free-standing tubs. 

There’s plenty to explore in the area, especially for those that enjoy the great outdoors. The village bakery and café-bar are a short walk away and you can join the old railway path turned walking route all the way to the pretty town of Le Blanc – a three-hour walk, or fifteen-minute drive.

Surrounded by the Loire Valley's impressive vineyards, Madame Louise is a 17th-century manor house with all of its original charm. Compromised of the main house and a cottage, this home is ideal for a larger family get together. Offering plenty of activities in this secluded part of the country, you can count on a relaxing holiday away from your usual hustle and bustle. If you do, however, want to explore the surrounding area, the beautiful town of Saumur is only a thirty-minute drive away. Pop into town for lunch and make sure to try the region's wonderful wines.

Found in the Loire Valley, one of France’s most historically significant towns, this beautiful palace has been updated over the years without compromising any of the 18th-century charms. You’ll find it in the ornate gilded details of the ceilings, the chandeliers, and local white stone and steep slate roof tiles. Pair that with beautiful antique furniture and attention to detail – especially where the more modern elements, like the copper bathroom fittings, have been made to fit with the style of this home.

Because the accommodation splits between the main house and a cottage, big parties can break down into smaller groups, so everyone experiences a measure of privacy and peace. Come together in the courtyard for alfresco meals or take a turn around the perfectly manicured gardens, stopping off to smell the roses before playing a few rounds of pool in the games room.

Enjoy wine in the shade of the big trees, catch an afternoon nap on the hammock and take family portraits in front of the imposing figure this home cuts. After a quick workout in the private fitness room, you can explore Loches. Stoll the cobbled streets, searching for a restaurant or cafe and stop off at the twice-weekly market for fresh produce. Though it’s hard to do, the great thing about leaving this home is coming back up to see the view of the citadel on the approach.

When it comes to gargantuan properties such as this one, it can sometimes be difficult to get the balance right with bedrooms and communal space, but this restored chalet just outside the village of Vernantes offers an elegant solution. Spread across three floors, there are a grand total of thirteen self-contained apartments, each with kitchens and living rooms. 

At the same time, there are some suitably lavish spaces in which to gather everybody together, from the grand banquet hall and a pair of central salons to the rather incredible outdoor space. In the vast grounds, there's a huge range of ways to fill up your time, whether you're paddling in the semi-heated swimming pool, walking around the twenty-two acres of forest or exploring the caves (with the help of a local guide). Added to that, the well-maintained French gardens are pretty to saunter about and you can even try your hand at petanque on the court, too.

There are a handful of bars and restaurants in local Vernantes, but there's a much wider choice in Saumer 19km away, or in the cities of Angers, Le Mans and Tours, which all take in the region of an hour to reach in the car. Even closer to the home, however, are the woods, vineyards and farmland in the Loire Valley, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is an idyllic setting for a family reunion or holiday with friends. Take in atmospheric period features like original fireplaces and wooden beams, and wander the sprawling gardens – who knows what mystical flowers you'll find? We love the canopy bed in the master bedroom plus the historic furnishings like the grandfather clock in the living space. The library is almost too good to be true, with its floor-to-ceiling shelves housing hundreds of well-loved books – choose one and retreat to the comfort of the sofa to read, perhaps with the fireplace lit for even more atmosphere. The separate guesthouse is perfect for those looking for a bit more privacy, with its own living space and dining area. On sunny days, however, you'll spend most of your time in the garden, cooling off in the pool or sunbathing on the grass. Gather produce from the neighbouring farm (we've heard the fresh eggs are a real treat), and cook in the country-style kitchen, dining outside in the shade of the trees. Venture into nearby Saumur to sample Michelin-starred restaurants and the grand castle, or tour local vineyards sampling as you go – Loire Valley wine is some of the best in France. Spend the evening playing badminton on the lawn – there can be no more fitting way to end a day in the 'garden of France'.
