This stylish little studio apartment is right in the heart of historic Annecy. From your doorstep, you can step out into streets lined with wooden-shuttered buildings, where cafés spill out onto the pavement. An alpine town, Annecy is flanked by snow-capped mountains and perhaps the most picturesque spot is the stone Palais in the centre of the Le Thiou River – the view of which is best enjoyed from the riverside restaurants and gelaterias, a five-minute walk from this apartment. Although it’s a studio, the apartment itself feels spacious and it has plenty of character courtesy of the exposed brick wall and hardwood floor. Originally built as a priory in the eleventh century, this medieval chateau gives you an opportunity to holiday like a member of the French nobility. The white stone turrets and sheer size of the building have lost none of their power to draw astonishment in the centuries since it was constructed and this power to surprise continues once you step inside.

The interior is a pleasing mix of the traditional and the modern, with wooden ceilinged rooms and stone cellars playing host to sleek wooden floors, ornate beds, and a striking collection of artwork. The grand dining room will bring a sense of occasion to even the simplest of meals, while the subterranean bar is an atmospheric spot for a digestif. Throw in a home cinema, games room and a lounge with an open fire, and there's sure to be something for every guest.

When the weather's on its best behaviour, there's a heated pool that benefits from stunning views of distant Alpine peaks. Parking there is free, but if you don't want to take the car, the ski bus stops just 100 metres from this home. Alternatively, you could just relax on this apartment’s large south-facing balcony or unwind in the Nordic hot tub. We love the enclosed games area, too, with its table tennis and table football. This abode also has a sauna and a great farmhouse-style kitchen.

The owner’s brother lives in the basement apartment of this home; he has his own entrance so your privacy shouldn’t be affected.

If you want to do some winter sports, the ski resorts of La Sambuy and Semnoz are just under thirty minutes away. In summer, there's a lakeside beach just 2 kilometres from this home, and the Voie Verte cycle and footpath passes the door.

Crafted by a local carpenter and spread over three floors, this home has four ensuite bedrooms and a hammam. When it's cold outside, the living room benefits from a wood-burning stove. For warmer days there are sunny balconies with stunning views and a west-facing terrace with a Jacuzzi. You'll need a car here, as it's a 1-kilometre walk to the ski bus. It’s also 4 kilometres to La Croix Fry and 3 kilometres to the shops and restaurants of Manigod. But that’s a small price to pay for such a beautiful location.

A car is necessary here, as it’s a kilometre to the nearest ski bus stop, but the secluded location makes it worth it. The interiors, created by local craftsmen, have a beautiful quality that only adds to this home’s charm – throw in the hot tub, steam room, and views of the Manigod Valley, and you’re onto a real winner.

You'll find this chalet just outside of Thônes. If you're keen to hit the slopes, La Clusaz is only a short drive away. Prefer hiking? The surrounding mountains offer treks for all levels and the house overlooks a flat meadow. When you're not out and about, you'll make a beeline for the hot tub. There's also a patio perfect for alfresco dining, an indoor sauna ideal for winding down after skiing, and a wood-burning stove for when you fancy a chilled night at home. With a mezzanine bedroom ideal for older children, we think this dwelling makes a great base for eight adults and one child.

Built in 1850, this refurbished chalet offers a luxurious holiday in the French Alps for families and friends alike. The amenities here are incredible – there are two terraces, a Jacuzzi, a sauna (both with wonderful views), and an indoor pool. There’s also a cinema room and a games room with a jukebox and pool table. We love the living room with its feature fireplace too. Oh, and the kids will love the bedroom on the attic floor – this dormitory-style room has eight built-in bunks and a TV corner. We wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t want to leave this place, but if you're looking to ski, this home is located in a quiet village, just a short drive from the slopes.

Also, the village of Manigod is just a five-minute walk away, so you can pick up some freshly baked croissants from the local boulangerie. For skiing, the slopes of La Clusaz can be reached via the bus stop just outside the chalet or by car in just under ten minutes.
