There’s a bit of magic at this home. It’s a windmill tower that dates back to the 1700s and has been carefully renovated into a fabulous romantic escape for two. You’ll enter the windmill via an oak door located on a grass roof and from there make your way up a stone walled stairwell to the second floor bedroom suite. Next floor up is a kitchen with everything you need to rustle up some tasty food. At the top of the tower, there's a lounge with panoramic views across three counties. When you’re not admiring the views or enjoying a drink outside, you might drive into Oxford or to nearby Blenheim Palace.

Nestled between two islands on the picturesque banks of the River Thames – this beautiful thatched Edwardian home built in 1903, under a fifteen-minute drive from Windsor, is the perfect riverside retreat. Watch the boats, ducks and swans on the river go by from your own private heated pool. Lawns stretch down to the water – perfect for a game of croquet or challenge someone to a game of table tennis. There’s also a multipurpose play area for any younger children.

Inside, you'll see more of those divine riverside vistas. There are two living rooms and plenty of space for entertaining your family or friends. We love the master bedroom’s balcony, but a real highlight of this home for us was the bedroom attached to the side of the house on stilts. It’s constructed out of 19th century beams from one of the last pioneering ships bound for Australia and contains beautiful carvings and unique features from this period.

When you want to explore, your hosts can help arrange River Thames boat trips to pick you and your guests up directly from the garden. There’s also a lovely pub in the nearby village of Wraysbury, a ten-minute walk away. As well as close proximity to Windsor and Eton, Ascot racecourse is just over twenty minutes in the car and Thorpe Park, a fifteen-minute ride, while Henley, which hosts the Royal Regatta is forty minutes. If you visit London, Slough train station (a fifteen-minute drive away) runs services to London Paddington, the fastest being fourteen minutes.

The building in which this apartment sits has had many functions in its near-two-century history — straw hat factory, corn merchants and estate agents to name a few. Today, however, you'll find a gloriously contemporary home that'll help you have an exemplary stay in Dunstable.

As you look around for the first time, you'll feel instantly at peace, something to do with the soothing greys used throughout. In the living room, a pair of purple sofas, parquet flooring and the chandelier make for a classy space in which to unwind, while the sleek corner kitchen is plenty big enough for cooking up special dinners.

As is the case with many period properties, there's an inordinate amount of natural light from the tall (triple glazed) windows — what else were you to do before the widespread introduction of electric lighting? — but you can also head down to the building's communal courtyard for your fix of Vitamin D, too. There's seating and a table, as well as free Pashley Cycle hire for the duration of your stay.

In local Dunstable, there are enough restaurants and cafes to keep you going, and there's a wealth of attractions that are easily reached nearby. London is only an hour away by train, but slightly closer to home, the Chiltern Hills AONB is rich with walking routes and historic sites — Ashridge Estate is twenty minutes' drive, for instance.

Snuggle up with a book in front of the wood-burner, challenge the family to a board game around the dining table or relax with a soak in the sumptuous master bathtub. The private courtyard is the perfect spot to savour a cup of tea or a cocktail in the sun. In the evenings, light the barbecue and enjoy an alfresco meal, gathering around the fire pit for toasted marshmallows when the air turns chilly.

Think honey-brown stone walls with an A-frame doorway, and a private garden bursting with bloom fit for the Chelsea Flower Show. Spend sunny days gathered together on the lawn, listening to birds sing and breathing in the fresh and flowery scent of the cottage garden.

Inside, it’s an ode to cottage-core living, with wooden beams running along low ceilings and the old stone bread oven in the living room harking back to the cottage's 400-year history. Plush sofas are made all the more cosy with Angora throws, and there’s a small selection of books at the ready for those quieter moments. Outside, your hosts’ passion shines through even more, with handmade willow fences and sunshade. To the front of the cottage is a herb and flower-filled garden in which you can spend summer days dining alfresco or lazing about on one of two deck chairs.

Set in the centre of the Cotswolds, you are perfectly positioned for exploring the north and south of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at your leisure. The picturesque town of Bibury is just a ten-minute drive away, while Roman ruins lie six minutes in the other direction in Cirencester. Closer to home, why not take a stroll to The Gilbertine for a spot of brunch, or try out the Village Inn at Barnsley, or The Crown at Ampney, both just a five-minute drive away.

With a prime position on Dunstable's High Street, this apartment in a 19th-century building is a peaceful enclave away from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Step inside and you're greeted by an interior dominated by cleansing shades of white and muted greys, with only the odd houseplant and piece of artwork adding a little colour and character. Stylish parquet flooring sits underfoot, while the glossy kitchen is a triumph of minimalist design.

Situated in pretty Charlbury, the place is surrounded by glorious countryside – and more importantly, it’s a three-minute walk to the pub. Follow a bridleway that runs alongside the river to Ditchley Park or set out on the five-mile Finstock and Evenlode loop. Come home wind-whipped and worn-out to a cosy sitting room with wood-burning stove. Light the fire and hunker down as a private chef, booked via your fantastic host, gets to work in the kitchen. Should your aching muscles need a little attention, request for an expert massage therapist to treat you to an indulgent pamper session. When it’s sunny out, spend your afternoons relaxing on the patio as the barbecue expectedly sizzles in preparation for long, lazy lunches.
